Yes, the ipad is more fashion accessory than computer when compared to its peers. But all these are luxuries that people think they need. Remember tv's and radio and cars and all those things were invented in little more than lifetime. Mankind played games, communicated and heard music long before our current and wonderful technology boom. But yea, unless you have throw away money, the iPad is more fancy-purse than hi-tech device. These are all just my opinions so...

So your view is that all those 10s of millions of people who bought a Nintendo DS or Sony PSP were primarily motivated by the desire to make a fashion statement. Got it.

Career advice: don't go into marketing.

What's new about the iPad? It's running a crippled OS that is really like a bad joke. Again, your confusing fashion for tech. It's hip to sit in Starbucks holding your iPad, I get that. Coming from a background in comp science, I can say "move along, nothing to do here." And I don't have a Palm Pilot.

Because compsci has anything to do with making goal-oriented applications that are easy to use for a normal person who doesn't know anything about.... compsci.

As a fellow engineer in the field (I assume you do actually work in the field, and aren't just some ignorant undergrad?) it'd be nice if you'd quit making all of us look like clueless relics and arrogant twerps.

Flash can be made better, its up to Adobe and the others to actually collaborate for once. Its not all Adobes fault. It seems Google is working with Adobe to make flash work, I wish Apple would too. Lets just get this pissing contest over with so we can enjoy the technology. Oh yeah, don't give me the HTML5 BS because HTML5 is a protocol and Flash is a framework, its always going to be different.

im sure someone else has commented on this, but html is not a protocol. http is the protocol used by the web, html is a markup language.

Yay!

Congratulations, your device makes use of dated, inefficient technology! You must be so proud. That will sure show Apple a thing or two! (sarcasm)

You're confused. HTML5 is a markup language specification. It's fair to say that HTML5 is tied to certain protocols like HTTP and Web Sockets, but the difference between a protocol and a markup language specification really couldn't be any more clear.

John is a smart guy but like some people here, Apple can do no wrong.
The fact is that Apple does very little wrong. I know that's difficult for some people here to accept, but their rise from near-bankruptcy to unqualified success across multiple, highly competitive markets speaks for itself. Apple is successful precisely because they do so many things right. There is a hell of a lot that can be learned by trying to figure out how they do it while there's relatively little to learn by obsessively scrutinizing their mistakes. People like Gruber understand this.

And Gruber actually does criticize Apple on a regular basis, even today as a matter of fact.

Can someone clarify this for me…

In the 2nd video, the one that shows the browser crashing…

Isn't the circle of dots that shows as a video on YouTube loads the signature of HTML5? Are we sure this is showing us flash-based video?

That's all Apple has to do is turn it OFF by DEFAULT. Then a supposedly knowledgeable user would have to consciencely turn it ON because they want it. Heck, Apple can even then pop up an alarm box stating that "Flash may be slow and use battery life, so turn it off if you experience difficulties".

These are certainly not insurmountable problems, even when talking about customer perception. And even if a few do blame Apple if Flash does not perform smoothly in their case, that can't be as bad as all of those who are currently blaming Apple for NOT supporting Flash right now. It's a "con" listed in practically every review of the iPad.

Tony
It's about more than just making it available - it's also about providing support for Flash when something inevitably goes wrong, which in the case of Flash on other browsers, is apparently quite a common occurrence.

"Flawlessly"

Yea.. uh huh. I'm sure Apple can make it run "flawlessly" too, after it eats up half the processor, crashes a few times and drains the battery in 30 minutes.

tell me one video source you need to enjoy that it doesn't work on th eiPad beside HULU.... ok, so, Hulu it's that important that you wouldn't buy an iPad just because of that?

I don't know you guys but I'm having a blast with my iPad, it replaces my laptop big time, I've being using it as if I don't have no other resourse just to know how really good it is, but honestly it is a magical device.

Just try to do your regular tasks on any other portable computer including Macs, I mean.. now when I use my MB, feels so old that I just go and grab my iPad to keep doing my work. and by the way Gusto is great! for web development, this iPad is no joke!

Well remember that it is a PROTOTYPE. I'm sure that when the iPad and iPhone were in that stage that some things didn't come up to par. It's not like all Mac products are flawless from the idea stage...

True, but with the exception of the iPhone 4G, and it was a preproduction unit, no known outsider has ever seen or spoke of a prototype in specific terms.

I find it laughable that Apple's so-called competitors are forced to show prototypes at this stage.

Maybe pathetic is a better word.

Careful here - I've been blasted for referring to the poseurs at Starbucks before....

Many off topic posts have been deleted. Let's keep this on topic please, thanks.

I have no clue what's wrong with other peeps Macs.

But my OH fires up my 1.6 atom hackbook running 10.6.3, watches YouTube and plays Farmville with no major performance issues.

Also, my Mac Pro runs 1080p Flash content without going on fire, starting wars, or causing mass famine, very strange. I think my hardware is actual magic. It's the only explanation.

On a side note, I can kill my iPhone's battery playing 3D games, I hope Apple doesn't ban these.

Prototype here. Prototype there. Let's see the finished product.

That's one of the problems these other companies have. They love to show "prototypes". 1/3 of which actually go to market.

its like 2 inches thick, it's a long way off from being a real product

I wouldn't be surprised of this is just a Windows 7 port into a tablet from by yet another "We are all hardware development and manufacturing per Microsoft's specifications and don't know crap about software outside of a few cowboys we contract" licensee that tries to hide the flaws of Windows and now Flash with an early prototype and the inevitable over trendy industrial design by a SolidWorks jock.

Nothing to see here! Move along!

Simple you don't treat your Mac like an indentured servant.

Apple Can Do No Right commenter gripes about Apple Can Do No Wrong commenters. News at 11.

Answer: It is because Flash is an application building framework, and Flash apps wouldn't be subject to the AppStore tax....

How dare a company create a closed device they can monetize (see Xbox 360, etc.)

Amazing how such a diehard fan of a company famous for leveraging platform control for profit and market domination (Microsoft) has such a problem with others doing the same.

I'm not trying to be stupid here, but what does it being a framework have to do with anything? Why is it Apple's job to fix Adobe's product that they make money on? Apple has a framework for mobile devices, and it works. Why should they fix a competitors? So developers can develop in Flash? I don't care what it's written in, I care that it works. In that sense, my experience dictates non flash is better than flash with the same functionality. Awww, you have to write native code and learn a new language for something you make money doing? Seems fair.

HTC Hero has had Flash for a while. Nokia N900 has had Flash for a while. There are even phones that have their entire UI made of Flash.

I don't know how Jobs can get away with saying there are no phones running Flash.
