notch is an eye sore, i returned my X and got a 8Plus
So are the huge bezels on the oversized brick that it is a plus sized iPhone.

As far as I'm concerned, the notch provides a means to get some additional content stored either side of it that would otherwise be taking up screen underneath an unnecessarily large bezel. It looks fine. Don't love it, don't hate. It just is what it is, and that's where good design just works.

The embracers are like parents. You kids can never do wrong. Deep down once there is a full screen iPhone you'll all be happier inside. ;)
My kid does wrong, and I let her know it. That's what good parenting is, because they learn. When Apple learn to shrink the necessary sensors and cameras and earpiece so that they can be placed in an extremely narrow bezel or even under the screen, then yes I'll have one of those in the future I'm sure, just as I'll have one if they don't manage it. Really makes no odds - it's just a phone at the end of the day and no less functional for it, but people will do whatever they can to defend their kids eh?! lol

Agreed. Until there are acceptable alternatives for the cameras, sensor array, and earpiece speaker, there has to be an area without screen.

I’m happy they didn’t make the ears dead space.

“Love” is a strange concept to attach to what is essentially a design/engineering trade off.

Like saying, “I love my car’s rear-view mirror”. The mirror performs a necessary function, so it needs to be there - end of story. No need to go overboard and love it. Acceptance is enough.

That is actually a very interesting article - thank you. The developers' reactions are interesting.

Wonderful analogy. Actually, and truthfully, I find the rear view mirror far more intrusive and problematic than I find the notch. As you say, I accept the rear view mirror because of the function it performs even though from a design perspective it's unattractive and can present a safety hazard.

I’m gonna get a great kick out of everyone who will be upset next year when the notch isn’t removed from the 2018 iPhones

I think its common sense that it won't be removed and if they add a larger screen plus model it will be there also. They'll probably fit more icons in the top for that model.
I dont see it going away for at least 4 years

These threads make me lose brain cells. When the notch is gone we’ll see if this guy comes back to complain that it doesn’t have one.

You wouldn’t love your TV having a giant notch, so why do you your phone?

You don’t have to justify your purchase by saying how much you ‘love’ first gen flaws.

It's just a part of the phone design and it's purpose is simply to accommodate the camera and sensor array. I can't understand why it's so polarizing.

If it’s making you lose brain cells, then why’d you read and comment on the thread?

Preach.

It will be removed but maybe in a few years. These are all DISPLAY GIMMICKS.

2011 - BIGGER and BIGGER displays
2015 - Dual curved displays
2017 - Bezel-less / taller displays

These companies are just playing us all. Nintendo depended on control gimmicks to differentiate. Samsung has fooled millions into thinking OLED is superior to LCD when its life expectancy is still shorter.

Analog stick (good)
Rumble Pak (semi-gimmicky)
WiiMote / motion control (semi-gimmicky)
Wii U controller (never truly portable)
Switch (works but some semi-awkwardness)

What smartphones truly need is leaps and bound improvements with battery life. But they will never do that for us. So what all these companies do whether Apple, Samsung, LG, HTC, or any other is rely on COSMETIC GIMMICKS.

How is having a huge top and bottom bezel make any smartphone LESS functional than the phone that lacks them?

Brilliant idea, young lady

Except companies are greedy and will never accept that type of technology with 10,000 life cycles and 20 second fast charging. They want our money every two years. So they rely on trendy designs. The next revolution might actually be useful or another gimmick. Foldable displays.

Can't wait for this bezel-less, taller display with weird aspect ratios and ugly notches to die out in 2-3 more years. Just gimmicks with the display and never wanting to fix a smartphone's true Achilles heel which is short battery life with only 1000 life cycles. Planned obsolescence rules for them.

The notch isn't really noticeable 5 minutes after you have an X, but to say you love it? Kinda strange... weird thing to "love".

I love the notch not because it is better than full screen, but because there are no full screen phones, and the notch is the best solution to the problem.
Other phones claim to be full screen but none of them are as full as the iPhone X.
And yes I know in terms of area, the Note 8 or S8 are higher but I don't think that's the correct metric to measure bezel size.

I would say that the notch has grown on me. Love is far too strong of a word to describe the notch...

This is a very weird thread. Loving an eye sore just because the tech doesn't exist to hide it yet. The notch isn't horrendous but something to love? Crazy.

I'm sure back in the day when people bought Pacers, they "loved" them as well. And they were designed eye sores.

the iphone plus models are more "full" screen than the X is. what really is the definition here of "full screen"?

The definition is having the entire front face be screen as much as possible. All the android phones failed to eliminate the chin because they don't want to invest in the expensive folded driver circuit.

I have no idea how the Plus models are full screen in any sense of the word.
