The bigger question is, why are some surprised with this?? We've already seen iPhone 4, a device launched well over a year ago, actually grow in sales. Did people really think the successor would flop even though it contained some real improvements? Apple's biggest goal with the 4S was to meet the demand with expanded retail channels and there was no question the 4S would succeed in terms of quantity sold.

Because the Nexus Prime DESTROYSSS!! the iPhone in specs!!

I'm not sure if I'm one of the people who downvoted you, but (speaking strictly for myself) when I downvote someone, it's only because I disagree. That's about all the explanation I feel I owe somebody.

In fact, about the only time I go out of my way to post about why I disagree with them is when I disagree with them so much, I just can't help myself. Otherwise, it's just "click" and move on.

Ok fair enough, i don't really see the need in voting and I think it's better to discuss what i agree or disagree on, maybe that is just me.

One million preorders, but that's across the entire world. Let's say half of them were USA, so that leaves 500,000.

On the other hand I read somewhere that Android has like 50% of the US market now, so that's 300 million people x (1/2) = 150 million.

That makes Android 300x more popular than the iPhone 4S. (150 million / 500k = 300).

Very cool.

But the Android freaks and even some of the media said it would be a flop?
Idiots.

:apple:

As did a lot, a whole lot, of people on this forum....only a few days ago!! ;) This forum was almost like Statler and Waldorf...but then the other way round, from "boooo" to "bravo"

Both words are correct actually. So while my correction of V's usage was incorrect (see I can admit fault) - the word affect could be used as well. Thanks.

"You comment on things that have no effect on you". The word "effect" was used as a noun to mean "result" and that was the correct usage in the sentence. But yes, you were wrong.

Now, please stop trying to deflect with failed attempts at grammar correction. At best, you know what I meant regardless if my useless was right or wrong and that makes you look silly, at worst it makes you look dumb when you're proven wrong.

What voonyx said.

Seeing as I admitted I was wrong in correcting you - it appears you're the one that needs to let it go. No deflection - just pointing out the hypocrisy. Have a great day :)

The fact that proves the lie

Apple critics always complain that Apple simply promotes the sizzle forgoing "functionality" for "form."

If that were true, then they wouldn't wait 17 months to release the next "hot looking" product. They'd do what other manufacturers do and create planned obsolescence by changing the look of the phone. Instead they stick with something that works and makes it even better.

That's why my next phone will be a 4s...though I will wait until supplies loosen a bit :D

Update: Well my willpower didn't hold out. I got my 4s on launch day after all :p So much for discipline!

well done Apple once again - anectodal evidence

I was told by an Apple rep from the European apple online store in Ireland that their German office took more calls in 2 hours after the pre-order came online than they did in the whole of September. I buy all my Apple stuff from this guy so he had no reason to lie as I'd already ordered online because I couldn't get hold of him for 2 days!

A lot of people skipped the 4 and have been waiting for a new iPhone before upgrading.

I'm not sure how true that is overall but I can confirm that it is definitely true in my case. While I've really liked the iPhone 4 I have stuck with my 3GS after the expiration of my contract. I'm expecting a big improvement with the 4S, although I am also expecting lots of questions from my wife who is getting one as well as an upgrade from an old Nokia.

I usually don't have the time to explain or discuss my reasons for not agreeing with someone. This morning is an exception, but generally, I only have time to read and click, with an occasional comment.

I wonder if a million of those stupid "S" stickers have sold. After all, that's the only difference between the new and old phone, right? Right??
I've read it online. It must be true!

Ok fair enough, i accept I made mistakes, however I'm not saying the iPhone 4s wouldn't have been successful without those reasons, i'm just saying surely they must of contributed towards it's recent success.

16 ( think, correct me if i'm wrong :p ) months wait for this iPhone 4s was always going to get a lot of people buying.

Fair enough. But I think you are overplaying the extra 3-4 months. I think the two biggest factor in the iPhone 4S success are the unprecedented customer satisfaction ratings with the iPhone and 3GS users coming off their two year contracts. Multiple carriers in the US is also huge.

I would doubt iPhone 4 users are significant to the 4S's initial success, as most are still under contract.

Many forget it now but the first Nexus One was ahead of pretty much everything else in specs too. Google, as well as Android enthusiasts, assumed it would sell just based on specs and web only sales would be good enough. Turned out there wasn't enough spec enthusiasts to make it viable and Google had to give up on selling it without carriers' help.

Statistics lie but damned statistics lie better.

There is an error in your math. It's not 50% of the US market, but the intergalactic market. So, Android has 50% of 12,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Given Android clear market superiority, Apple should just closed up shop and return its 76 Billion dollars to its shareholders.

Some people seem to think that if you took the shell of a 2007 Prius, and stuffed a 2010 Prius inside it that it's somehow still a 2007 Prius... Odd people. This is quite a significant upgrade on many fronts.

Some people also think (or claim to think) that Apple customers only buy Apple products as a fashion statement and to look cool. Since the only phones that Apple sells are the iPhone 4 which is a year old and therefore not a fashion statement, and the iPhone 4S which looks the same as a phone that is a year old and therefore not a fashion statement, and the iPhone 3GS which is even older and quite definitely not a fashion statement, these people must think that Apple isn't going to sell any phones at all, except to those whose friends are blind.

And of course to those who buy the iPhone for its qualities, not out of some blind idiotic sense of fashion.

I have read that maths education in the USA is going downhill. I read it on the interwebs, so it must be true.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, sir. Remember, you were the one who corrected my grammar, rather then try to continue the discussion. Now you're upset because you're being called out on it?

Have a nice day as well! :)

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

Steve will be very happy to know 4s manage to top a million in a single day.

That's where critics generally seem to get Apple wrong. Those of us who use Apple products know that it's about the end-user experience -- the functionality of the device married with the other products and services Apple offers.

That the devices can function as perfectly as they do while looking amazing was part of the genius of Steve Jobs. He didn't just give you a good-looking product, and he didn't just give you a product with a bunch of bullet-point specs that could be listed on the box; he gave you a powerful device that anybody could use to actually harness that power.

That's the part of Apple I love and the part that I hope continues on with Steve gone.

Yeah the spec enthusiasts exist on these type of forums. I'm one myself, but I'm not naive enough to lie to myself that all you need is specs and that makes a product better. That's what Android fans do unfortunately.

But this article proves what most people should have known all along, which is simply that no one cares about specs. That's the last thing the average consumer considers when buying a phone, and that's not what sells phones in any way. If it were, like I said a million times before, the "iPhone killer" would have been out a looong time ago.
