Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't he tell that to his bank? Where was his fraud protection service? I would assume his bank can handle this, just by cancelling 120 payments.

He was using iTunes Beta.

Run Beta there is bound to be bugs. Guess we know now they can be expensive ones.

It's not just with PayPal - my purchases are charged to my credit card directly (i.e. without PayPal), and I've been billed twice for Lion as well. The first one was -of course- the legitimate purchase, but I got charged a second time when I wanted to update my Snow Leopard server - I had two instances of Lion in my App Store purchase list, and two on my iTunes account. I've contacted Apple, and one of the purchases was refunded, it's no longer on my AppStore list - but I'll still have to wait for my creditcard statement to see if Apple's refund actually succeeded...

This is a good example of why my PayPal account is hooked to an unused checking account that only has a non-zero balance when I intend to use it to fund a PayPal transaction.

YIKES! As a college student, I was thinking of linking my checking account/debit card to my Apple ID so I could make purchases without having to run out and buy those blasted gift cards. Definitely not thinking about that at the moment, heck no!

Some of us are smart enough not to rely on borrowed money from credit cards ;)

Credit cards are not so great if you carry a balance but if you pay them in full every month they're fantastic. Among many other benefits, you never need to carry a wad of cash with you (I never have more than $40 in my wallet and that's never caused a problem), they can be used anywhere, you can dispute charges, you're not liable for charges you did not make if you notify the issuing company of a loss of your card. None of this costs a penny. I've used a credit card almost exclusively for the last 20 years. Can't beat em 99% of the time.

You can't click purchase more than once. It has protections against that. Duh!!!

In fact, after you make the purchase the first time, the option to Buy again changes to Install for any computer running the App Store tied to that ID.

Since he mentioned he was running a Beta version of iTunes, he's either found a bug which will likely be confirmed by other testers and Apple, or there's a piece of this story he's not telling us about.

That's insane... Why would anyone use Paypal anyway? I just have a credit card affiliated with my itunes account, and have never had any issues with double billing.

That would be the FIRST thing I would do. Before even calling Paypal and Apple.

Some of us are smart enough to bank with institutions that provide us a Visa debt card that acts just like a credit card but deducts the money directly from checking so there is no interest or borrowed money involved.

Simple post for the thread, this happened and proves things aren't absolute and if it doesn't relate to or support the topic let's not add to the bashing as much as we would like to fire back and go off topic at those who don't understand.

Just click on the red & white sign in the post to have it removed so the thread doesn't end up a mess or more of one at this point

This thread just helps make us a bit more aware that stuff can and will happen. Now let's hope it will be taken care of for this person or others if it happens down the road…

<Christman isn't the only person to face these issues surrounding Lion and PayPal. There is a lengthy discussion on Apple's support website about the issue, and other bloggers have run into similar problems.

Even though the purchases above say "refunded", Christman says he hasn't seen a dime. "Apple claims there was only one transaction. When I told PayPal to dispute them, they closed the cases and marked the items as refunded on the 23rd. Bear in mind all this money was taken and never returned yet.">

PayPal needs a series Federal investigation of their business practices. Maybe our Pal Al Franken when he's done regulating all things cyber can get on that one!

I got into a tiff with Paypal several years ago along similar lines and it took 3 weeks for anyone to contact me and only via Email. 6 months for me to get my money back. (with the help of my Lawyer) Bottom line, don't support Paypal, they suck!

I was bit by an iTunes/Paypal scam last year in which a scammer was able to charge over $1000 from my bank acct and another $1000 from my CC registered on Paypal. PP did reverse the charges but learned a lesson: don't attach any PP or CC acct to your iTunes acct. It's NOT secure no matter what Apple says.

Now I buy iTunes cards and keep a small amount of credits on iTunes for impromptu .99 app purchases. If I want to buy a more expensive item like Lion I'll load up more credits just before the purchase. Someone a PITA but less so than dealing with fraudulent or erroneous charges.

something like this happened to me. albeit on a smaller scale and I never noticed until apple told me. After all it was only £1.19

I got this E-mail.

Dear iTunes Store Customer,

We are contacting you with regard to your iTunes Store account, which, due to an error, was mistakenly charged for the re-download of a 17+ application. We've identified the duplicate charge(s) on your account. The duplicate charge(s) have been refunded to the original payment source and should be available within 3-5 business days.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this situation may have caused you.

Why I use a credit card, much easier to dispute charges and you still have your money in your bank. Having a direct withdrawal from your bank account is too risky.

If you are stuck with using pay pal, I suggest everybody use a separate bank account that is not tied into your other bank account, that includes not having overdraft protection. But, that still is a huge risk with the bank slapping you with overdraft fees.

I'm lucky enough I use a small local bank that does this. I just use my debit card (which works like a master card) and same thing, customer is always right. One time a merchant who used an old portable credit card swiped had accidentally added a 5, so my $35 meal ended up being $355, it was credited back to my checking before I was even off the phone. I called the restauraunt to tell them, so that I could pay them the $35 I actually owed them (it was an honest mistake, nobodies fault here), and they just told me not to worry about it! So yeah, that definitely takes ALOT of headache out of those situations.

Be careful. Banks and credit cards have different regulations. The MOST you could ever be liable for with a credit card is $50. Banks have no such rule to my knowledge. If they ever change their policy you may be out of luck.

Interesting.

I had a problem with Paypal on launch day where the Mac App Store kept saying I need to verify the payment source or something. Had to change to credit card just for that transaction.

I don't think Apple likes Paypal; as you can see, their website doesn't accept it.

This sounds like an iTunes mistake, so this probably is Apple's fault.

That doesn't change the fact that PayPal is a horrible company. Seriously, stop using them. Just because this wasn't their mistkae that doesn't make them worth having.

Why use PayPal?

Why are all these people using PayPal? They are notorious for unscrupulous acts regarding your money. Their guarantees are useless, and they have little to no motivation to restore your money in case of situations like these or cases of fraud. Of course when you have no issues, you have no issues. Pray you never do, cause once something happens you are screwed.
