Huh. So this thread made me check my credit card activity list to make sure Apple didn't charge me multiple times. They didn't charge me at all! WTF?

(And no, I didn't have any gift card credit.)

If you're a mere $3K away from being broke and not being able to eat, pay your mortgage, etc., then an upgrade to Lion ought to be considered a luxury item, no?

You sir, are an idiot.

"A mere $3k" ... not everyone has a stash of money stored away, and most people simply live from month to month on their salary, paying their bills and spending their expendable income that's left over on what ever they wish.

If you bring home $3k a month in salary and your bills come to $1.5k, then you have $1.5k expendable income to play with as your own knowing your bills are paid. If Apple wrongly take your entire $3k income, you're screwed.

It's called the real world, welcome to it.

Oh wow, that really sucks. But I guess we can all use this as a learning lesson; don't use PayPal. I think I'm gonna withdraw the money in my PayPal account and then disconnect it from everything it may be connected to. I'll just stick to manually putting in my card number in the off chance I need it. I think I'll also start using iTunes gift cards from now on.

Well it is 250+ new features, it's really not that bad...

Just kidding

I guess he should've linked his itunes account to a credit card. That way he could still pay his mortgage.

linking your paypal account to your main checking account is not very smart.... for this exact reason. And while using a credit card would have kept this from happening, the best solution is to set up a 2nd checking account for use with paypal and other online purchases.

When I upgraded to lion, I transferred the $33 over to the checking account associated with all online purchases (paypal, apple id, amazon, etc). If I had ran into this same problem all the other charges would have been denied because the balance would have been too low.

I'm in the same boat

I used my free up-to-date promo code to download Lion, and was asked to confirm my billing for iTunes??? So I did, then got stuck in a loop of having to continue entering promo code, then confirm billing. I finally gave up, and still didn't see Lion had been downloaded. Well, I had been charged 7 times for Lion ???? WTF? I immediately contacted PayPal and they sent a note to APple. While in the phone with one of the PayPal reps, the refunds started appearing. ALl 7 were eventually refunded. However, PayPal still sent the charges to my bank, and the account I link to I only keep a limited amount of funds in so I was still charged 7 times for the "purchase" and then 7 Overdraft fees??? WTF AGAIN???

I conference called the bank and PayPal and may bank has agreed to reverse the charges to once the PayPal refund is processed... Still waiting. This was all on the 20th of July. Fast forward a few days.

July 22, I find Lion is sitting in my Purchased folder on the App Store. I click the Install link and it installs. Then later int eh evening, I see I have AGAIN been charged for this free promo "purchase", and get dinged at the bank for another overdraft fee!!?? Once again WTF IS GOING ON??? I contact PayPal, they escalate my issue to a claim, and forward to Apple. A few days go by, still nothing. I call Apple Speak to a very nice rep in CR, and explain everything, and he says he can see the history, and is very apologetic. He says it should be resolved soon and offers to send me a t-shirt and a few things as a gesture of good-will.. Ok I wear an XL...

Then last night, I decide to download a FREE game to pass some time. Only to find out my iTunes account has been DISABLED??? WTF???? I fired off an email to the CR rep, who had sent me a Thanks for buying Apple e-mail, and have not heard anything from anyone.

My original 7 purchases have still not been returned to my Bank, I have another "purchase" of Lion (I only have one Mac computer I purchased in June), my bank is still in arrears, I can't even get a free game from the App Store because my iTunes account is disabled... And I don't have an XL Apple t-shirt or mug yet... Beginning to taste that sour part of the Apple!:roll eyes:

So, How is your day so far?

I've been putting off cutting off all access to non-credit card funds from paypal and itunes and anywhere else I can think of... I just went and did that just now. I don't even have 4000 bucks for them to steal, they'd end up overdrawing my account.

I'd really like to blame PayPal here, because i've only had negative experiences with them too. But this looks like he was charged for software he already paid for when clicking the "download all" button, so Apple must have charged him for this software again.

If someone cannot pay mortgage after being hit for $3900, then I think a discretionary Lion upgrade and these other 116 apps he bought prior (assuming not all free apps) is being a bit financially irresponsible IMO.

Unless he was exaggerating.

The post has been quoted so many times already is there really a point to deleting it? Now no one can down vote it.

You should all get a small credit card with a limit of $500 no overdraft on it that you use online. That way if an accident happens it only effect a small credit card and not your bank account.

iTunes accounts are being hacked too and charges like this are occurring. I know two people so far in the last month who have been hacked and had their accounts charged up.

And your credit card company makes you pay for everything that's on your bill no matter what?, even if it's from a fraudulent transaction?
Luckily, mine doesn't. I just need to report the fraud (before paying the bill, that is) and I don't have to pay the fraudulent transactions.

Same issue form Apple, dragging feet and pointing fingers. Apple needs better customer service for their digital stores. They only have email support right now, but they really need is a dedicated 800 number and folks on the other end who can fix transition issues immediately.

Totally agree with that. I get the idea of not being overwhelm by client complaints but some issues needs to be taking care of right away.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to plan for crap like that. I'd be willing to bet 60% of Americans don't have that in their liquid checking account.

I had a similar case with my iPad refund, never got that money back. Apple and Chase are horrible about that. I'm never buying online again. Cash only for large computer investments from now on.

Unless I do a CTO then I always go to the Apple Store and pay cash. There is no way they can screw that up!

What if he's a developer (he certainly has a developer account) and needs Lion for work.

Plus it's a $29 download. That's a lunch and a doughnut.

Lets keep the discussion on topic and not insulting people. I cleaned up a number of posts that were off topic and insulting.

I don't have $4000 in Cash however I put it into my house which is now worth 75k more than I paid for it.

Not everyones situation is the same, Liquid assets don't mean much.. Someone could have $150,000 in the bank and 500k in debt and I would be MUCH netter off then him.

Go troll somewhere else.

Who cares?! Stop getting into other peoples' personal affairs. The issue here are the erroneous charges. You're one of the rude ones I was referring to.

wow...

yes, I'm disliking paypal less and less these days > and this is another reason why.

The gift card usage is an excellent idea > so many thanks to the person who said they use those. Next time I go to Apple, I'll pick a couple up. And I'll definitely be saving all of my itunes emails from apple and paypal.

back to the unfortunate fellow who was hit with this >

I really hope he got that 3k refunded.

Yeah there is no reason for Paypal to know about transactions that technically shouldn't be happening. This is pretty obviously Apple's problem.

Again - you don't know what his mortgage is. Maybe it's around 1K and he had 5K in there. That's hardly being irresponsible.

Let this happen to you and see how you like people judging you on your savings, spending, etc.

But of course YOU'D be the VICTIM then, right? Makes all the difference.

Wow.

There's still something that isn't quite ringing true with this story though.

When a credit card is used to make a purchase, and then a second or third transaction is initiated within seconds or minutes of each other for the exact same amount from the exact same vendor, red flags almost immediately fly from the Bank to the owner of the card to deny the transaction and notify the card holder of possible fraud or theft.

In my case, I have attempted to make credit card purchase at stores for the same item on two different transactions for the exact same amount and had the second transaction immediately declined.

It's possible he was only Billed Once with the bank. He didn't actually say. I would have checked with my account at the Bank to see if the charge had actually been processed 121 times as stated. If it was, I would really have a problem with the Banks inability to detect possible fraud and notify me but it would be an easier thing to defend when talking to a personal banker and having 120 transactions backed out.

It's also curious why only Lion shows up as a repeated charge and not the other 116 applications he says he redownloaded.
