If someone cannot pay mortgage after being hit for $3900, then I think a discretionary Lion upgrade and these other 116 apps he bought prior (assuming not all free apps) is being a bit financially irresponsible IMO.

Unless he was exaggerating.

Why? Do you know anything about the time frame over which he purchased those other apps? Lets call it 2 years. He is not allowed to spend $60-80 a year on discretionary stuff? I try to be fiscally conservative but things change. Maybe his mortgage is $500/month. He had more than 6 months worth of payments in his account. That is not irresponsible. Maybe he just purchased a car last month and that depleted his savings and he is building it back up. YOU DON'T KNOW!!!!

While I do *NOT* blame the buyer...I will say this.

Your banking accounts should be kept as simple as possible.

Please....use a credit card to buy stuff! It's so much safer. You don't care if you lose $3000 in your credit line for 48 hours, but to lose $3000 of your hard earned money sucks.

Just pay with credit card and do an electronic payment from your bank to the card, before the bill even comes. This is what I do.

Two things I find wrong here (aside from the billing issue).

You don't need the iTunes 10.5 Beta to get access to the previously purchased apps. That is available in iTunes 10.4.
Also, Lion is purchased through the Mac App Store and not the iOS App Store (iTunes) which means you wouldn't have been able to get it through the previous purchases anyway.

I'd say the tie is a coincidence and the actual issue was more likely a glitch on or between the Apple/eBay servers.

Come on guys, it's just four grand.

OMG, how can they charge fifty bucks for a cable!

to be fair, the US is probably the only or biggest place i know that uses credit cards. most people i know here dont even own a credit card and i only have one for my vacation in the US

hmm

I will get bashed for this but it seems like the op should sue apple in small claims court. He is more likely to get his money back that way

Why are all these people using PayPal? They are notorious for unscrupulous acts regarding your money. Their guarantees are useless, and they have little to no motivation to restore your money in case of situations like these or cases of fraud. Of course when you have no issues, you have no issues. Pray you never do, cause once something happens you are screwed.

I use Paypal, but would never link a bank account. I just have my credit card on there.

The last thing you want to do is shop online a lot and have to give your credit card number to every store. There's a higher chance of fraud.

With Paypal, your credit card number is with them, and you don't have to give it out to anyone else.

Yes, Paypal has glitches, yes Paypal has occasional annoyances, and yes, Paypal is proprietary, but it is the best thing out there for online payments (at least if using a credit card).

One of the things I hate about Paypal is that your address is listed as "unconfirmed" unless EVERYTHING (from your name to your address) matches EXACTLY across the board.

For example, if you are logging in to a family member's eBay account and would like to pay with your Paypal account (and both have the same address, but different names), it will be listed as "unconfirmed". This can cause problems because some sellers don't like shipping to unconfirmed addresses. But isn't an unconfirmed Paypal address exactly the same as using a credit card without Paypal?

It's possible he was only Billed Once with the bank. He didn't actually say. I would have checked with my account at the Bank to see if the charge had actually been processed 121 times as stated. If it was, I would really have a problem with the Banks inability to detect possible fraud and notify me but it would be an easier thing to defend when talking to a personal banker and having 120 transactions backed out.
He sent me a download of transactions at the bank. He had 100 charges as direct debits from PayPal, and 22 charges on his debit card which was the backup funding for his PayPal account.

Paypal Requires Verification

This is another example of why you should not link paypal to your primary bank account

Some CC companies & banks will process credits to the account slower than debits, especially large amounts (i.e. 3K+). Also, PayPal could simply refund the amount to his account without actually passing it back to the account it came from, which if he manually sends it in could take another 3-7 days.

why? I think we need to know this, you think overcharging you for over 100 times is not really a problem?

This wasn't us. This was one guy as opposed to the million+ who bought it opening day with zero problems. And as mentioned in several other posts, it happens sometimes. This guy just happened to run to the nearest press outlet instead of letting things run their course. Errors happen, and they get resolved. Whining to anyone who will listen doesn't change anything.

what a dummy... I'd email STEVE before reporting to any news site! Bet it would have been taken care of real quick! ;)

YOU ARE WRONG!!!! just kidding, just felt like fitting in with all the haters on here lately.

Right on with this advice. I use Discover card for everything, they have always been super helpful in resolving disputes. I make one call, they credit my account and THEN investigate. No waiting on my end to get the money back and I never have to deal with anyone again. Did this one time when Dell sent back my computer, not repaired, and I asked for a refund. They refused, so I called Discover and got my money back on the spot and never heard another word about it.

Yeah it is the best system. have been using it for the past 5 years. I have over 100K points too which is great. I wish I could pay my rent with my Amex.

Twice I had Amex dispute charges and twice i won. That'll show you Time Warner you crooks. ha

The most interesting part of this story to me is that MacRumors reached out to Apple for comment. Don't recall the last time I heard that!

WTF? I'm a student, and i've got like 500$ a month including rent, which is around 250$. So i've got 250$ a month for food and other stuff i might need. Still, i downloaded Lion the same day it was available. I'm an IT student, so i need to stay up to date with stuff like this.

ish happens, folks. Keep your eyes peeled and monitor your accounts.

And if this ish happened in the Android or Windows Phone app stores, you'd be having a field day.

And if spending $29 when you "only" have $4,000 is financially irresponsible, and people stopped spending money like that, then retail sales would grind to a halt and no one would have jobs.

Besides, who said $4,000 was all he had to his name? Perhaps he has a decent job and gets paid $4,000 once a month. Perhaps His mortgage and bills are due now, but the next payday is after that? Now he's screwed. It's not financially irresponsible to pay your bills and then use the remainder of your paycheck to buy stuff you want. We all do it. Of course, we all do it assuming that a $29 charge won't turn into a $3,800 charge.
