And then make it even more expensive than the current gen. No thanks. I am good with my 12.9" iPP 2nd gen which will probably be the very last iPad I buy.
Time marches on, the new version of the 12.9 iPP will swap out TouchID for FaceID. As always, buyers of the newer model will get a faster device with the latest technology, which has no effect on you. (Until you can’t run iOS 16 because it only runs well on an A12X I guess!)

But 4 or 5 years from now, there might be enough improvements to entice you to upgrade :) :D

Disappointing. I hope they also make a comparable iPad with Touch ID. I just purchased the iPhone 8 Plus over the X because that ridiculous notch and lack of Touch ID was a deal breaker. I understand Apple wants to be considered a trend setter but this is really more about hype and marketing than functionality.

Why is lack of Touch ID a deal breaker. Face ID is just as fast for me.

Different strokes. :) This last purchase proved I'm not an iPad person. No matter how many times I've tried to reconcile and use the device, it either gets sold or passed off to relatives. I barely use this now only to draw; for me, it was a waste of money. Enjoy your iPad.

Sadly it seems like the notch is here to stay, and a visual staple in the Apple name. It won't look as bad on the iPad though, it will have less visual weight.

Not sure why everyone is assuming a an ipad will have a notch. The notch is on the iphone X because they wanted to make it as small and as "bezeless" as possible.

The ipad NEEDS at least a bit of bezel or you can't hold it. Even the reduced bezels on the ipad 10.5 have enough physical space to hold the face ID cameras so they wont need a notch and I doubt the bezels on the top bottom will ever get that thin.

there is NO way there will be a notch on the ipad when it gets Face ID. As stupid as it looks on the iphone, it was necessary from a space perspective. It will NOT be necessary on the ipad from a face perspective. And a notch on such a big device would look HORRIBLE.

100% this. It's going to be in the phone, tablet, laptop, and pc eventually.

This is true. Otherwise, you're going to be stuck with one Face and x number of passcodes. Quite inelegant.

Trivial? If trivial, wouldn't it be possible now? If it was possible why would a person need to shift their face left or right? Face ID reads off angle fairly well. The iPad will be less than 2ft from the face, the angle won't be that great.

the ipad will have enough space for additional cameras aimed at different angles. Not saying they wont solve it a more efficient way with better cameras but thats one potential solution.

I like bezels. A place to put my thumb when holding the iPad one-handed. A place for the bungees on my Levo Bookholder, as well as other accessories.

And I'm hoping that Apple comes to their senses and combines both Face ID and Touch ID to keep everybody happy.

Just like the X. Something like this...

Looks like the paper clip holder you get in seminars. You know the metal/plastic board with the metal clip on top that holds a couple of sheets of paper. I always hated those for their clip notch. However, at least you could shove your pen under the clip/notch to store it.

It would be nice to have iPhone and iPad to treat equally features such as same powerful speakers, OLED, faceID & 3D touch.

A11 bionic chip is more powerful then MacBook Pro (2013) - I love this idea by putting MacOS into iPad and iPhone (plug-in dock to the monitor/ without dock run as iOS).

just like Microsoft display dock or Samsung DeX dock.

Unfortunately I think it's going to become more prevalent in future products.
Apple believes the notch not only house sensors, but serves as an identifier that it's an Apple product.

Yep, Jobs warned us in the video below, about the consequences for a company when the marketing people take over.
Now we have the notch

The iPad mini would get a new lease of life with a bezel-less design. Phat chance though.

Apple is working on a new high-end 2018 iPad that will adopt many of the design elements from the revamped iPhone X, reports Bloomberg. The new tablet device, which is likely to be a "Pro" model, will reportedly do away with the Home button.

It will feature slimmer edges, a faster processor, a custom Apple-built GPU, and built-in support for Face ID, allowing it to be unlocked with a facial scan much like the iPhone X. With Face ID, there's no need for a Touch ID Home button. While the new 2018 iPad is said to be adopting many iPhone X features, Bloomberg's sources do not believe it will feature an OLED display. Instead, it will continue to use an LCD, likely because Apple suppliers are still working on ramping up OLED production. Samsung continues to be the only display maker capable of producing OLED displays suitable for an iPad, but technical and financial constraints will prevent Apple from adopting OLED at this time.

A new version of its Apple Pencil and new "software tools" for using the stylus are also said to be in development alongside the new iPad model.

According to Bloomberg, the revamped iPad is expected to be released "a little more than a year" after the prior iPad Pro update, suggesting it could see a launch sometime around September. Apple refreshed its iPad Pro lineup in June of 2017 at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

Today's rumor is in line with prior reports from reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously said he believes iPad Pro models set to be released in 2018 will come equipped with a TrueDepth Camera and support for Face ID.

They need to allow multiple user profiles for the iPad. This is what's holding me back from buying another iPad. My wife and I can easily share an iPad.

Otherwise, I'll just purchase another Surface device since they support multiple user profiles.

Apple will invent some amazing system to ignore your thumb on the screen when you are only trying to hold the Pad. Maybe track your eye movement and if you aren't looking at your thumb then it is just gripping. Or they could just make a new Mac Pro.

12.9 or 13.3, smaller pencil with better storage option (Although I don’t mind my Poetic case), faceid, smaller bezel, faster, better camera. I’d be happy and upgrade my 1st gen 12.9.

Ok I love my X, but an iPad shouldn't have a notch.
I’ll stick to the notch free devices, even if it’s not the latest greatest product. Apple can’t have thought “yes, this notch is an elegant solution to challenge of putting a camera on an all screen device.” If they port that rushed-to-market idea to the ipads, I won’t be giving them any of my money. It’s just straight up, inelegant, bad design.

I expected these features to land on the 10.5" iPad Pro first so that is my guess on what we will see. They might put them on the 9.7, as well, but I could see the 12.9 getting it last if there are supply constraints.
I don’t think the $329 iPad will get FaceID so soon, not on the next refresh anyway. I think the profit margin is already squeezed. Adding $20 or 30 to BOM cost wouldn’t make any sense. Apple would rather get the price to $299 than have to increase it to $349 or $379.

Like the SE, it’s the least expensive model, and doesn’t get the latest or best tech. I do expect it will be updated next year with an A10 though, to add more useful life; the A9 being a 2015 CPU is getting a little long in the tooth. (Same with the current SE, and similarly I expect the 6S/6S Plus to be retired by fall 2018.)
