Time marches on, the new version of the 12.9 iPP will swap out TouchID for FaceID. As always, buyers of the newer model will get a faster device with the latest technology, which has no effect on you. (Until you can’t run iOS 16 because it only runs well on an A12X I guess!)And then make it even more expensive than the current gen. No thanks. I am good with my 12.9" iPP 2nd gen which will probably be the very last iPad I buy.
If the iPad does not have a notch, Apple will be fragmenting thier idevices .
Why is lack of Touch ID a deal breaker. Face ID is just as fast for me.Disappointing. I hope they also make a comparable iPad with Touch ID. I just purchased the iPhone 8 Plus over the X because that ridiculous notch and lack of Touch ID was a deal breaker. I understand Apple wants to be considered a trend setter but this is really more about hype and marketing than functionality.

But 4 or 5 years from now, there might be enough improvements to entice you to upgrade![]()

No home button on iPhone -- not a big deal. Small phone; easy to swipe up.
But I think we can all agree that swiping up will be a little more difficult with an iPad.
Sadly it seems like the notch is here to stay, and a visual staple in the Apple name. It won't look as bad on the iPad though, it will have less visual weight.
100% this. It's going to be in the phone, tablet, laptop, and pc eventually.
This is true. Otherwise, you're going to be stuck with one Face and x number of passcodes. Quite inelegant.
Trivial? If trivial, wouldn't it be possible now? If it was possible why would a person need to shift their face left or right? Face ID reads off angle fairly well. The iPad will be less than 2ft from the face, the angle won't be that great.
Just like the X. Something like this...

I'm wondering what can they do to the Pencil?
Unfortunately I think it's going to become more prevalent in future products.
Apple believes the notch not only house sensors, but serves as an identifier that it's an Apple product.
Apple is working on a new high-end 2018 iPad that will adopt many of the design elements from the revamped iPhone X, reports Bloomberg. The new tablet device, which is likely to be a "Pro" model, will reportedly do away with the Home button.

It will feature slimmer edges, a faster processor, a custom Apple-built GPU, and built-in support for Face ID, allowing it to be unlocked with a facial scan much like the iPhone X. With Face ID, there's no need for a Touch ID Home button. While the new 2018 iPad is said to be adopting many iPhone X features, Bloomberg's sources do not believe it will feature an OLED display. Instead, it will continue to use an LCD, likely because Apple suppliers are still working on ramping up OLED production. Samsung continues to be the only display maker capable of producing OLED displays suitable for an iPad, but technical and financial constraints will prevent Apple from adopting OLED at this time.
A new version of its Apple Pencil and new "software tools" for using the stylus are also said to be in development alongside the new iPad model.
According to Bloomberg, the revamped iPad is expected to be released "a little more than a year" after the prior iPad Pro update, suggesting it could see a launch sometime around September. Apple refreshed its iPad Pro lineup in June of 2017 at the Worldwide Developers Conference.
Today's rumor is in line with prior reports from reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously said he believes iPad Pro models set to be released in 2018 will come equipped with a TrueDepth Camera and support for Face ID.

Patent it quickly and sue the crap outta them for moneyz if it happens~64GB at $1,299. You heard it here first, folks.
Why would anyone buy an iPad anymore - so lame
I’ll stick to the notch free devices, even if it’s not the latest greatest product. Apple can’t have thought “yes, this notch is an elegant solution to challenge of putting a camera on an all screen device.” If they port that rushed-to-market idea to the ipads, I won’t be giving them any of my money. It’s just straight up, inelegant, bad design.Ok I love my X, but an iPad shouldn't have a notch.
I don’t think the $329 iPad will get FaceID so soon, not on the next refresh anyway. I think the profit margin is already squeezed. Adding $20 or 30 to BOM cost wouldn’t make any sense. Apple would rather get the price to $299 than have to increase it to $349 or $379.I expected these features to land on the 10.5" iPad Pro first so that is my guess on what we will see. They might put them on the 9.7, as well, but I could see the 12.9 getting it last if there are supply constraints.
