Apple Document Confirms MacBook/MacBook Pro (Late 2008)

An airport card in the monitor. I wonder if the airport card is now thinner or sized down. Can't wait to see what Apple engineers. This is more interesting than the crappy MacBook shells, which aren't anything especially unique or progressive.

If you look at the document you can see the new slim airport card in the pictures. It is so small it fits in the clutch of the display case, that is the bit at the bottom that attaches it to the bottom case, pretty incredible. Because the clutch has a plastic cover we might see stronger signals.

At this point, does anyone doubt that they are updating the notebooks? I don't think releasing documentation is considered leaking.

A leak in this case simply signifies some kind of glimpse/sample of a product before its official release date.

How could one find this? Guessing URLs?

This new airport looks like it might share the USB bus with the web camera which is a few pins in the display cable. Should be enough bandwidth for wifi speeds to be unaffected when the camera is on so prob not an issue.

Keep in mind the antennas for wifi are on the left and right side of the macbook screens. Obviously those have to be connected to the NIC to operate.

What this looks like is just a Technical Support notice so when a technician replaces the display, they have to install the Airport card. So, what it tells me is that REPLACEMENT DISPLAYS don't have the Airport Card already installed. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. They probably want the old Airport card from the damaged display to be installed before the replacement display is installed.

Plastic lid and WiFi = GOOD RF PERFORMANCE!

Does this mean the airport card is going behind the display?

possibly reinforcing the rumor of a 2 tone plastic lided macbook, better wireless reception with a plastic lid?

I suspect that if Apple does indeed go this route the goal would be better RF performance. Having the antenna in the lid with the WiFi card should provide Apple with much better performance. First plastic is going to attenuate the signal as much. Second it should be easier to employ much large antennas. There is also a third possibility that performance would be increased due to seperation from all the high speed signalling in the main case.

Done right this could be a simple improvement that could be a big win for Apple.

That could be ugly!

I wouldn't be bothered if the WiFi interface was on a dedicated USB port but sharing with a video camera is just asking for trouble in my mind. One or the other is going to get compromised!

That being said I'm wondering if Apple might run a PCI Express "slot" up there. More so I'm sitting here wondering why I'm even bothering to wonder about this as the debut is only two days away.

Early vs. Late 2008 & Nvidia failures

So this sort of defines "early 2008" vs. "late 2008" MBP with respect to the Nvidia GPU failures (to this point I though early 2008 might mean something else such as Jan, Feb + Mar production runs).

So we now know that every MBP produced in 2008 (if I read the Apple tech release right) has the GPU with the packaging defect.

Apple continued to used the Nvidia cards AFTER Nvidia's July announcement of taking a $200mm reserve against GPU failures.

Apple simply took Nvidia's word that MBP were not affected -- despite tons of evidence from the Mac community even before Nvidia's July action that there was a problem. (I also think Apple already had hard data internally about this, but we'd never know about that.)

Wow -- totally screwed, and I know now why Apple will not provide warranty coverage for the GPU failure beyond the 1 additional year.

Epic failure and potentially fraudulent behavior. Certainly by Nvidida, and Apple looks complicit also by not trying to be proactive.

Hopefully a means to ensure GPU failure comes about. Apple deserves to have this come back to haunt them.

Can someone tell me the easiest and fastest way to find out what was said at the "notebook event" since sadly I will not be attending but will be very curious.

Also what are your opinions on whether the notebooks will actually be released that day or just announced. I ordered one over a month ago for back to school, though it just came in wednesday and I need new ones within 14 days in order to be eligible to upgrade for free.

:D

Probably because like the rest of us, you like to feed your excitement and interest.

Yeah that might be true but after buying a MBP and an iPhone this year my interest is leading to a lot of frustration! These could be absolutely dandy machines but with no cash for toys they won't end up in my home.

What is even worst is that I have work to do outside. Really these threads are taking my focus off of the other things in life I should be working on. Pathetic!

Get some coffee.

They've already admitted to it. And just because one product was screwed up doesn't make everything else so.

I like the fact that the document refers to both the MacBook and MacBook Pro giving the same instructions. This means the designs should be identical but with different hardware components and screen sizes!

Wow, totally cool engineering... however, they took down the page already so I can't see. Damn these leaks, and that little Dutch boy named Jobs.

MacRumors.com will probably have post-event notes published the evening of the 14th. Apple will also post a quicktime stream of the keynote event a few hours after the live event is complete.

We will have to wait and see when the notebooks will be available for purchase. Steve Jobs will tell us at the keynote.

Displays?

it will be about notebooks, nothing else.

They are 'linked' to the notebooks, sorta. But then so are projectors...

Our distributor has over 3,000 Apple notebooks in stock. They aren't going to be too happy I think on Tuesday. Although Apple has 'price protection' where they either lower the prices or 'buy' them back at the original cost.
