I remember waiting five hours for the iphone 3g. It was actually a lot of fun. The Apple employees went and bought cartloads of coffee and donuts and were passing them out.

mmmmmmm... free donuts and iphones. :D

Why 6:00 PM? When they sell iPhones, they start in the morning and the store is filled to the max all day long. Are they just wanting to keep people in line longer? I don't buy the 6:00 PM bit.

PS: I bet the free gift is a touch enabled magic mousepad (Or a code to download a free move)

the original iphone went on sale at 5pm.

i have a trans-atlantic flight to catch much later that night, so i do hope the line isn't too long. don't want to be stuck with the airline's multimedia device.

Want 3G version but don't want to wait a month!

What are you guys going to do if you want the 3G version but cant wait a month? Buy one and then sell it on Ebay when the 3G comes out?

That's sort of the boat I'm in. But, since I refuse to pay another monthly 3G data bill, I'm going to take my chances with the Wi-Fi only model. However, if I can't resist, I'll either put it on eBay or pass it off to someone else in my family. I'm hoping I can resist.

Please tell me that pic was lifted from another product release in the past and people aren't already waiting on line for a product which for all we know could be as long as 29 days out (the last day of March) and still fall within, "end of March"? If people are really in line all those people should be committed and go with the men in the van with no windows while wearing the funny jacket with the buckles on the back. :D

could somebody in the city snap a shot of the apple store tonight and post it here, to put mingoglia's mind at ease?

I suspect that means that anyone buying an iPad from an Apple retail store on launch day will get a special gift. Unless they run out of iPads and/or gifts. It's unrelated to the time you get in line.

Ah, excellent, thank you. Hopefully the Examiner's information was legitimate! I'd love a special gift! :D

I've vacillated about this very thing and plan on buying two of them and be done with it. The WiFi version will live at home; and also loan out to guests (in the house of course) and to use as a spare. I was originally just going to get the 16GB version for this, but it's only another $200 for 64GB, so it seems more cost effective to go that route.

I've already surrendered to the fact that I just can't wait! I've been wanting this since I sold my Kindle 2 last Summer once the rumors seemed pretty good.

Just let me know when I can place my order with overnight shipping and I will be quite happy...

I agree with others that the 6pm issue does not seem realistic or very logical.

A blog post from the Examiner now makes similar claims of a March 26th launch date with Apple store employees getting training on the device starting on March 10th.
This makes me doubt the report. My boyfriend worked in sales at an Apple store for over a year, and the only advance training he received for any new product was the new in-store activation process (scanning IMEIs, porting numbers, running credit checks, etc) for the iPhone 3G... which did not involve seeing or touching an actual iPhone 3G until he sold his first one the morning of 3G-Day. The notion of advance units arriving in Apple stores more than two weeks before they go on sale (giving ample opportunity to be photographed, smuggled out for the night, quietly shown to friends and persistent customers, etc.) is almost laughable.

I was thinking exactly this as I am not sure if I will really need the 3G but it would be nice to have while traveling and so I will buy the low-end wifi model and then either sell or give to wife and pick up a 3G version when released. I might even just take the wifi ipad to work and use for patient education (with images and webpages) which would then make the product a tax write-off.

I'll totally wait in line for it… and am considering the camping out thing for the special gift… had a blast in the iPhone lines… big social scene!!! Fun times.

Will there be a launch the same day/time in Canada as well ? As I remember from the keynote, Steve Jobs mentionned availability in Canada at the same time.

Otherwise, I'll pray they have some 16GB left when I get to NYC the next day :D

Line update before it got too dark to take pictures...

I didn't read the whole thread, but:

regarding the 'special gift', my guess is a free one of those cases.

gift

I think the gift might be the holder that Apple has been showing in there photos.
