Line formations for expensive products that are limited at launch? Has this country learned anything from recent history? I think there's too much risk for even a single act of unexpected violence to spoil the whole event. The major networks will run the story 24/7 and undermine the intent of Apple.

I dont know how to take the special gift. Is it just a thank you to the idiots who are sleeping on the sidewalk to get one or is it begging on the part of apple for the publicity that comes along with the idiots who sleep on the sidewalk to get one?

By the way I mean idiots in the nicest possible way.

lolwut?

Black friday went down without a hitch in the majority of areas, save for the occasional fight @ toys r' us over zhu zhu pets. I never heard of any fights for any products recently. Not saying there weren't any. Would love to see some youtube video :)

I heard a "rumor" that the "free gift" is a "contract" with AT&T. :D

uh oh .. looks like Mac Rumors is going to have to add a new tab at the top of the website for "iPad"

I suspect that means that anyone buying an iPad from an Apple retail store on launch day will get a special gift. Unless they run out of iPads and/or gifts. It's unrelated to the time you get in line.

typically they give each store x of whatever (say 100) and they give them out to the first that many in line

I bought my original iPhone the day after it was launched; just wandered into an Apple store intending just to "check it out" but lost self-control and bought one. There was no line and a bunch of phones in stock.

I have a hard time imagining the iPad will be as popular at launch as the iPhone. Most people already had cell phones, but they mostly sucked, so the iPhone seemed like a pretty sure success, while the iPad still has to really prove itself. Also, I think a lot of people wanted an iPhone on the first day so they could carry it around to show off, but the iPad doesn't really have that property.

I think the iPad might do well eventually, but it's hardly a given, and it probably will take a while for the market to grow, as the apps develop and people figure out what this thing is really for.

Someone was telling me about using the remote desktop (or screen sharing, or whatever the OS X equivalent of VNC is called) to access their iMac from their wimpy laptop to do some heavy Aperture work without pissing off the wife by disappearing into the basement, and I realized that custom remote control apps for the iPad could be pretty awesome. The iTunes remote app for the iPHone is really slick. Wireless-N plus wake-on-lan for the desktop machine really opens up a lot of possibilities.

March 26? This is old news! I nailed the date way back on January 18, seven days before Apple's press shindig. I didn't get everything right, but I came closer than a lot of folks:

Name: iSlate
Price points: $799 & $899
GUI: Unbelievably cool and NOT just a "big iPhone"
WiFi: Yes
Bluetooth: Yes
Built-in cellular data: Optional
Ability to be legally tethered to iPhone data: Yes (with additional cost monthly tethering plan)
Ship date: March 26, 2010

Name - Wrong!
Price points - Not really that far off... most were expecting $999. Close enough to be counted as correct! :)
GUI - It's not just a "big iPhone" and it is a very cool GUI so, check!
WiFi - Easy one... check!
Bluetooth - Easy one... check!
Built-in cellular data: Optional - BINGO!!
Ability to tether to iPhone - A big wish of mine but wrong!
Ship date: BINGO!

So, I give myself 6 out of 8! :)

Its funny how they stand there all night and all day LoL.

They just cant wait for an preorder on the internet :p easier and hassle free imo.

But yea i guess they love the outdoors.

In for 2. I'll show up at 5 AM regardless of morning or evening launch. Since no activations are required, it should go smoothly (iPhone launch) instead of choppy (iPhone 3GS launch) or a hellish nightmare from which there is no escape (iPhone 3G launch).

My guess for the free gift: Promo codes/gift card for FREE iWORK APPS. Minimal hard costs, high value, increases enjoyment of product on day 1. As a marketer, that seems like a no-brainer.

I am so FREAKING excited!

In the future, a computer company named Apple will make computers that you can own and keep in your house. In the year 2010 They will create a new kind of computer that you can hold in your hand. It will be used to play music and movies. It will connect to a web of networks that span the world. It will bring more access to knowledge for all of humanity. It will lead to world peace.

Then in 2012, the Earth will be eaten by a giant space marmot.

Then they locked me up.

THAT WILL BE MY BIRTHDAY!!!

Honestly... I was born on the 26th. I think Diana Ross was too. :)

kernkraft...

now that i have your name and your birthday, i know how to derive your passwords....

Identity theft right there. :D

As soon as the iPad was announce and Steve Jobs said 60 days, I told myself I would do pre-order this time around. But now that we're getting closer to Due date I am beginning to get that same excitement I had before the first iPhone was released.

Also, I remember I had a lot of fun waiting in line for all 3 iPhone's and the Leopard release. The lines were long and the activation process took a long time, but I met a lot of cool people in line and no one seemed to complain that we were waiting, everyone got along. and so I think for that reason alone I more likely will be waiting in line again.

just so happens....

That I have off march 26th. Looks like I will be taking a ride to the Raleigh NC Apple store!

I thought it still hasn't been confirmed whether you can tether your iPhone to the iPad. I hope to God that we can. Here in Canada Rogers allows free tethering and I don't feel like paying for more data when I've already got a huge data plan on my phone that I can't even completely use on my phone each month.

Ability to tether to iPhone - A big wish of mine but wrong!
