DUDE!

You think the flash memory on these phones even writes at 30 mb/s?

HA HA HA HA HA

also,
802.11n is 160 Mbps and up... NOT 54... you're thinking of .11G

A few walls away from my Airport Extreme I get about 75Mbps. The G is 24Mbps.

Can anyone with a bunch of podcasts on their phone that has installed 3.1.2 scroll through through the list of their podcasts and tell me if the scrolling is smooth or not? In both 3.1 and now in 3.1.2 both my main list of videos and podcasts scroll very sluggishly. I currently have 21 different podcasts on the phone and when you scroll through that list it is very jerky. But what is weird is that if I go into one of my podcasts (like say GeekBrief.TV that I currently have 51 episodes of) the list scrolls as smooth as silk as it should.

This is all academic as it is not the only variable - as you so aptly point out in your comment about the slow flash memory in the phone.

Piss and spit over the exact causes, independent speed tests have reported the iPhone transfer rate via USB is 2.43 MB/s while the wifi transfer rate is around 0.5MB/s. And then, yes the speed of the RAM makes it even slower.

What about the battery life issues with 3.1?? Isn't there some type of fix for that or is not an issue?

EXACTLY !!!!!!

Ever since 3.1, my screen brightness has been higher that what it used to be for the corresponding position in settings, and my battery life has been terrible! (literally, terrible. I'm talking 40% less that what it was before 3.1. I'm being completely honest)

Definitely less boggy, definite battery improvements with 3.1.2

This may go without saying, but if you have Fusion running, close before trying to update. Bricked my phone.

Whoops... had Fusion running, and... all went smoothly. :)

Speaking of smoothly, the UI does seem more fluid. Flicking between icon-pages is much silkier than it was with 3.1. Amen.

UPDATE:

Things are definitely smoother with 3.1.2. I think this suggests battery life will indeed improve-- the jerky screen transitions, boggy keypad and password entry, etc., that typified 3.1 always seemed to me to be like the work of a rogue background process sucking up CPU cycles. For now, I'm seeing nothing of the sort in 3.1.2. It might come with usage, but it was pretty much a fixture in 3.1. I'm hopeful.

MORE UPDATE:

It wasn't my imagination, the system on my 3G is significantly smoother, less boggy, more responsive with 3.1.2. The rapid battery run-down is significantly improved, too. I surmise all those issues had to do with something in the background eating CPU cycles. So far, with 3.1.2 it seems gone.

Just what are you people reporting battery issues DOING with your iPhones? After a typical day of moderate to heavy use, the battery is still at about 60%. I've never had a battery issue with 3.0 or 3.1.

Update failed, had to restore the phone....twice and finally restore from backup. First time it's every gone so bad

Am I the only person who thinks this update might (most importantly) enable VOIP apps to now work over AT&T 3G??? In other words, now we should see an updated Skype app that works on 3G.

Was landscap mode in mail always there, or is this a new feature in the new update?

Now iPhoto will not detect my iPhone with 3.1.2 but it sees my wife's 3G with 3.1.1 just fine?

How do I fix this?

Maybe, but you have to admit that is a lot harder then just plugging in a cable and downloading iTunes.

Also - don't forget that not everyone has a Mac. There are plenty of windows boxes that don't have BT or a WiFi card.

I personally think it should be an option, but Apple likely doesn't want to support another thing.

Even those crappy 2WIRE DSL routers have built-in wifi... and the budget netbook garbage computers have wifi.... this is not new tech and ppl living with 1997 technology can use the dock connector...

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm of the opinion that someone without a WiFi network probably doesn't have high-speed internet either... so they're probably not going to tie up the phone for 4 days to download a 300mb update for their phone to get this new fangled wifi sync technology...

Besides, I dont care about the bumkins without wifi... I want to sync my crap over wifi.. (not bluetooth... 3Mbits/s is WAY too slow and 30 feet is too short range for my taste)....

I WANT A BUILT IN WIRELESS INDUCTION CHARGER IN THE NEXT IPHONE REVISION!!!!!!

Wireless charging, wireless syncing.... GIMME!

My wifi speeds definetely got better with this update. Before I would only get 4-5Mb, now I'm pulling 14-16Mb.

Hey, you're right, though I'm not seeing numbers quite as good as that. Web pages load perceptibly faster. I'm pulling >2000kbps down over my WiFi, about 1/2 what my Mac yields on the same connection (though different tests might produce different results.

are those wifi transfer rate numbers from straight file transfers to the phone? or from website data transfered with or without rendering time? Also, who did that little comparison?

I'll have to run my own file copy speed tests and see... Not that I question your numbers, I just like to check some things for myself

Either way, I still want WiFi sync.

WiFi Sync, Wireless Charger... They're not unreasonable requests

I appreciate everyone that corrected me but all the arguing in the world doesn't change the fact that the iPhone transfers data 8 times faster over USB than wifi; tethered, ssh, sftp, syncing, ... you name it.

I live on a boat with an iPhone and a laptop. My iPhone is my ONLY internet connection. I've tethered it with the "carrier file hack", iPhoneModem, PDANet and MyWi. MyWi is the hands-down winner - plus it allows you to tether via wifi, bluetooth or USB. The USB tether blows the socks off of all the others. Speed tests are comparable to DSL.

I am on AT&T with a 16 GB 3G off the coast of Los Angeles, CA.

I'll mop the decks for free booze and a weekend cruise :p

I've owned the first two generations of the iPod touch and have had an iPhone for almost two and a half months, and in my two years of dealing with the iPhone OS (I've used it since 1.1.1), this is the first time I've ever had a problem updating. First the progress bar on the iPhone's screen refused to move, so I had to do a hard reset. Second the computer stopped recognising it and I had to unplug it several times for it to register with iTunes again. Third, it finally fully installed the update but then the screen stayed showing the progress bar even though iTunes was allowing me to sync with my device, and would even show it ejecting and reconnecting if I unplugged it. Tried another reset, and it sat there for almost ten minutes before responding. It's finally 'working' now, but wow - this is the worst version of the OS that I've ever had to use (even compared to 1.1.1). It's just laggy, transitions look terrible and choppy now (this is a 3GS so it really shouldn't be doing this), and sometimes movements are totally irrational (like 'flicking' through a long list - as you know it generally slows down and eventually stops if it doesn't reach the bottom, for me it immediately jumped to the bottom of the page and it went totally blank, with the scrollbar indicating that apparently I was trying to scroll further down when I didn't even have a finger on the screen). I know the only real solution is a restore, but I really don't want to do that...

Exactly my thoughts. However my 3wk old iPhone 3GS shipped with 3.1 pre-installed didn't need to upgrade and initially battery was horrible but after full drain and full charging it's improving. Also I'm wallcharger charging or through my JBL OnStage, not via the PC via the cable. Right now I don't need to upgrade. Maybe after Xmas i will.

MAN I LOVE this device!! I could never fathom WHY I disliked it in the past without ever touching one.

Are you using 3G? Is Wifi and Bluetooth turned on? Is your screen brightness below 50% ?With the 3 of those switched off and screen brightness at about 40% your battery times will probably double.

I updated my 3G 16GB Iphone and so far so good. I was having problems with freezing and sleep. Will know later if they are gone for good or just temporarily.

I don't think that anyone else has mentioned this yet, but did Apple fix their braindead choice to disable the fast-access of the music app through the double-clicked home button?

I think they disabled that in 3.1 or 3.1.1 and if it's not fixed in 3.1.2 I guess there's no reason to update.

Er... Settings > General > Home, select "iPod" under "Double click the home button for", double click home button and you get the ipod app. Just tried it, works for me on 3.1.1.

After updating I have the answer to my question: no play button. I have a presentation coming up next week, so I guess I'll abandon my iPhone for that task. Maybe a Pre or Android can pick up the slack that Apple left. If they'd allow a screen dump, they might win me over.

(picky, picky picky....)

It's there on 3.1.1, just go into a photo album and there's a play icon in the middle of the overlay at the bottom of the screen to the right of the share button.

3.1.2

Halfway through the update my phone crashed.. had to restore it reload 14 or so GB worth of data.. pain in that ass

WOOOOOO! Thank GOD! Today at my lunch break at work, I had to hard reset my iPhone twice as it wouldn't wake back up!

WOOO!! AGAIN!

I used to have the same problem. Found out my iPod cable plugged into a USB hub was the issue. Plugged the cable straight into the back of my iMac. No more issues updating.
