The build numbers are much more meaningful, 13A510D.

Nobody has been able to explain to me what the first number in a build means - especially when I ask them about 3.

13 may well be mavericks but what was 3?

The first number in a build is the major version but major version 3 seems to be missing for mac os x.

If such a build exists, what is it?

Builds for major releases of Mac OS X (I have left out updates and developer previews to make the pattern clearer):

1H39 (Kodiak US version)

2E14 (Kodiak International version)

?

4K78 (Cheetah)

5G54 (Puma)

6C115 (Jaguar)

7B85 (Panther)

8A432 (Tiger)

9A581 (Leopard)

10A432 (Snow Leopard)

11A511 (Lion)

12A269 (Mountain Lion)

I hope this lessens the "meaning" of build numbers somewhat for you jb510. But I stand by what I said before that the 1.0 in "OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 3 1.0" probably MEANS that we will have lots more builds of mavericks before the GM.

A longstanding bug in Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion -- in Finder options, when you stipulate the font size of the titles - and click the button "Use as default" -- you expect that the selected font size becomes the default through all the folders. But it doesn't. Has that bug been fixed?

That's huge! Can you please do the following:
Quit Adium and Hardware monitor and twitter
Then open each one and check if it still is on the integrated GPU
From my experience if you reboot and the apps launch automatically they will start on the integrated but if you quit and launch them they switch to the discrete.

Thanks !

Also found out that whenever iTunes is launched to resume download of iOS apps, it will always prompt for Apple ID and password. Didn't notice this on previous DPs...

The integrated and discrete graphics debacle seems to have solved on DP3. Adium and Hardware Monitor no longer trigger discrete graphics. Time to observe if Mavericks has better battery performance over Snow Leopard...

This is not a bug, it's a feature. The system needs time to end all running processes before shutdown.

Sorry to say but this may be the case for normal HDD..not for SSD or Fusion Drive.. until 10.8.3 my shut down was about 2-3 seconds.

Mavericks isn't a possessive noun or a plural.
What would Mavericks, a surf spot be possessing?
There is only one Mavericks surf spot for which OS X 10.9 was named.

Now if your talking about OS X 10.9 AND the surf spot at the same time, you might say, "the Mavericks' are both awesome"

It was named for one of the surfer's dog, named Maverick, so it became Maverick's beach. As mentioned earlier, by convention, geographic location names drop the apostrophe. I think that's all in the Wiki page for it (I remember reading it all in one article, somewhere...).

This is what I observed. Just done a quick reboot with Hardware Monitor on auto-launch. Then I quit HM, relaunched manually, trigger HM Preferences, and Overview Monitor, despite all these they were in Integrated mode.

Adium I do not have it in auto-launch, so I launched it manually. It stays Integrated even with a message window opened. But once I trigger Adium Preferences, it goes to Discrete.

"Show Info" works now, but anyone else experiencing some wierdness in the scrolling? Like all elements in the window come loose.

I believe it's the version number of the Darwin Kernel shipped with that OS.

Activity Monitor icon on the Dock no longer shows the Memory usage pie. That option has disappeared altogether. What's available for selection is only CPU, Disk, and Network usage.

If you read MacRumors over the years, that "memory usage" display has caused so many problems, with people desperate that they have no "free memory" and trying to find solutions for a problem that only existed in their mind. No wonder it is gone.

----------

Okay, a couple of problems:
  • The problem with the dock persists: it disappears when in 'fullscreen' mode and fails to trigger when moving the mouse along the bottom of the screen.
  • Color profiles seem to have become unstable: my screen jumps from yellow to blue casts. This happens (for example) when dismissing the screensaver or when logging in.

Which RADAR number is that?

As a developer for many years, I loathed 10.7 and tolerated 10.8. I'm really enjoying 10.9. Mavericks seems to be a return to power users with improvements in multiple display support, Finder, improved OpenGL Core support (finally!), Keychain syncing (back from the dead), consistent/cleaner UI,speed, Bluetooth support - even the DP's seem more stable than OS X 10.7 and 10.8. Some hints suggest iCloud will offer "Dropbox" support since dropping "iDisk" (which needed overhauling). Couple keychain syncing with full document iCloud sharing, app's such as "1Password" and "Dropbox" may not be needed. Many app's in OS X such as "iWork" are becoming cross-platform, I'm curious what changes may come in iPhoto and Aperture.

Thanks! Just what I was hoping to hear. Really looking forward to the functional improvements and hoping Jony Ive gives Mavericks a UI overhaul similar to the refresh being developed for iOS 7.

Can anybody that has this build and has a mac with SSD or Fusion Drive try to see how long the shut down last? i want to report to apple.
Thank you

Check out this Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_OS#Release_history

The build numbering is tied to Darwin version numbers. The Darwin version numbering scheme was changed at one point, which explains the lack of a build number starting with 3.

As I said before the Darwin numbering consistency only started with Puma - which DOESN'T explain the absence of a major version 3 of mac os x.

3rd times the charm

Since Apple's releasing beta 3 only a week after, is this safe to say Apple's been busy with allot of fixes, or they just wanna stay in the same "loop" as iOS ?
