You only need to download this once. If you have multiple machines that are authorized on this account, just back up and copy the installer over to them before installing.

I'll have to download twice for the 2 Macs in my household. No going around it, we don't share the same iTunes account so we can't share the installer. I'll also happen to have to pay twice, 60$, so this is going to cost me 10$ more than the Family Pack cost for Snow Leopard and I'll get 3 less licenses.

So this is an issue in certain scenarios. That's what Porco is pointing out : Lack of options is bad and doesn't make for a smooth experience for everyone. More options means more people will have a smooth experience getting this thing installed, which would help adoption.

Don't be fooled : The reason Lion is MAS exclusive is to force the MAS into relevance.

and this is the problem with them

I am on talktalk unlimited plan

but it has a fair use policy of 30gb (or is it 40) per month

so it is not really unlmited

I think carriers should just stop offering unlimited plans altogether. We all know it costs money to provide service, so just provide us a fair price already. Why not just a base price + x cents/GB? Seems fair to me.

You do not have to share itunes, just sign in the app store and download it then sign out. As long as it is on a mac that you may use

I live in Vancouver and only pay 40 per month for 25mb down and 2.5mb up. There is a 100GB cap per month but I always go over it by a lot and I am never charged more and no one sends me an email or calls to say use less or upgrade. I have been doing this since I joined this ISP in summer 2008. It doesn't slow down or stop working when I go over at all. I have heard in Australia that some stop working and you have to buy more bandwidth.

Some months I have used 400GB+ and all was well. I even called and asked them once and they explained the "cap" is actually a guideline for choosing the right plan. ie. if you use this much per month get this plan etc. They told me they don't even really monitor usage because they have so much overall bandwidth that their services are never held back. They also offer 100mbit to consumers so that shows the type of bandwidth they have overall.

Sorry but your experience doesn't do a blanket sweep for all of Canada.
Who is your Internet provider? Bell and all of the other big guys are just horrible.

I just called talktalk, they said "we do not have a fixed amount in regards to a fair use policy but more for those who constantly abuse their service" and refered me to the following:

With TalkTalk Plus, there’s no fixed limit on the amount you can download every month. That means you can download as much as you want without worrying about any extra charges.

TalkTalk Plus customers also have no restrictions on time-critical web traffic such as surfing, gaming, streaming content from applications like BBC iPlayer or using VOIP packages like Skype.

We do have a fair usage policy, which is designed to ensure your service is fast and reliable 24 hours a day. This only involves managing non-time critical traffic on our network, such as Bittorrent or Peer-to-Peer file sharing – These services often involve huge files being uploaded and downloaded, which can cause network problems.

TalkTalk Plus customers have no restrictions on torrent or file sharing activity between midnight and 3pm. At peak times, TalkTalk Plus customers can still use those services but they may find Bittorrent or file sharing is a little slower.

Thanks for this info

It was like this when I was with Tiscali, but when I moved to TalkTalk they said it was now capped (fair use at 40gb)

think I will go by what you said :D

Apple's website says you can install it on all authorized machines. So as long as your second machine is authorized on your iTunes account, you're covered. It doesn't seem as though that account has to be the main one you use on the second Mac.

Apple said:
Install on all authorized computers

When you purchase Lion from the Mac App Store, you can install it on all your authorized Mac computers. Just sign in to the Mac App Store from each Mac and download Lion from the Purchases list.

I'm so glad I moved ISP earlier this year. Downloading Lion would have scared me to death when I was with Orange. On their 'Unlimited Broadband' I got a letter earlier in the year saying something to the effect of 'You have continually abused the fair usage policy by downloading an average of 6GB per month, so we have capped your speed to 512k.

Rang up the next day, cancelled, moved to Sky, haven't looked back since.

Are you talking about them having a really cheap option with a cap? Because I googled and from the first 6 I checked 4 or so had an unlimited package.

In Canada ? The only providers still providing unlimited packages are the DSL resellers which rely on Bell for service. The packages that have unlimited bandwidth are usually very low in the Mbps scale (TekSavvy offers 640kbps DSL for 24.95$ per month + tax, wow what a bargain). The max I've seen for unlimited downloads/uploads is 5 Mbps down with a paltry 800 kbps up, which is just god awful compared to the other options we have but that are capped.

Please move here before you try to comment on our Internet options.

Atleast the caps were pretty high and there were options to buy more.

I won't sign into my account with my CC number registered on my GF's computer. And that still isn't 100% legit. The computer is not one of my authorized machines.

There's really nothing you guys can say, that is what Apple decided. I have to download it twice and pay for it twice for both me and my GF, even though we live together and share the same Internet.

That is how Apple decided it would be. Any other options is akin to pure piracy.

At the price we're already paying, there's nothing good about that. Again, don't discuss it if you don't live here. We have crap for Internet/Cellular service.

Really cheap option? Could you please provided me with the links? With my current ISP the most expensive plan is 75$ ~ 50Euros. And that aswell has a 75GB Cap.

It is a fact that Europe has a much better infrastructure in compared to Canada. And we all know the Prices here are so much more compared to the UK, Cant even argue that

Sweeeeeeet. Finally Ive been anxiously waiting for this and I just got 8 GB of Ram for my Mac and it should be arriving Thursday :D This will definitely be a pretty exciting week (tech wise)

EDIT: I been also thinking bout getting the Trackpad just so I can make use of the multitouch gestures. You guys think its worth getting?

Just got the top of the line imac a couple of weeks ago. I have both the mouse and trackpad. Mouse sucks because you have to move your wrist but the track pad you just use your fingers. I will never use a mouse again! Go buy it!:D

Pay for it twice but download it once and then copy the installer across. You pay for it legitimately and save bandwidth. What is wrong with doing this?

10.6.8 App Store Glitch

Now if they would just get the glitch fixes with the 10.6.8 release on some computers, I could actually go to the Mac App Store and buy it.

dumb question: why not just burn a dvd of the disk image?

Again, that goes against how Apple decided it would be. I could also pay for it once, download it once, and just copy the installer over and give them the finger. I could also just get it from that site on the Internet that offers it for free.

I could also sneak into an Apple store at night and take out one of the MBP's hard drive with it on it.

Plenty of options, but the official way for Apple is : Pay for it and download it from the MAS for every iTunes account. That is how they intend to copy this thing over and according to copyright, they are the sole entity that can decide how this is done.

If they had intended for it to be done in any other way, they would have officially documented them.

How does that even go around the fact that I need to pay for it twice and download it twice ? At that point, all that does is waste 2 blank DVDs.

He only has to login to the MAS on her machine long enough to add it to his authorized machines and then log out for it to be legit, but apparently he doesn't want to do that either.

Nope, I don't want to do that. We don't share a CC, I don't want her to have access to my CC, even for a limited time, and her computer is hers, not mine, hence not one of my authorized machines. Why would I make it one ?

Why is it so hard to accept for some people that we don't all live the same way they do and that this "Single Method of Distribution" does not make for a smooth experience for everyone ?

In Belgium, the highest internet option for one of the companies, Belgacom, is 57 EUR per month for 30mb/s download, 4.5mb/s upload and unlimited. Which seems fine until you realize the second option is 43 EUR, 25mb/s, 3.5mb/s with 100GB.

Oh, 10EUR more a month for unlimited data usage if you want it. Otherwise, once you go over your limit, they cut you down to 56kB/s and it'll set you back 5EUR for 20GB.... yeah, I know. I think there's also a 5 EUR subscription to make that 100GB limit balloon to 200GB :p. Unfortunately, while I'm still studying, I don't pay for my houses internet at home.

What makes it worse is that you'll never see that speed. Hitting 3mb/s download would probably mark the end of the world and I never hit 500kb/s. Largely due to the fact I live relatively far out of the city, but not THAT far out from Brussels...near Waterloo. It's really that bad though. When you go over your limit and realize you're rolling as fast as a caveman's car with square wheels, it really makes you want to think about throwing stuff around your room in a violent yet purposeful manner. Obviously you wouldn't really do that...it would just create a mess. :p

I am sorry because I know this will sound disrespectful, but I do not intend it to be any more than a statement: Way too many people in this world think they know how to run a production-based retail business, but they don't have the foggiest clue. In this case, with all factors considered, Apple would absolutely STUPID to not send disks, both logistically and financially. I bet they have never for a second considered doing all the store upgrades relying solely on the network.

Clearly you did not read any of the previous posts that stated that is exactly what they have done in the past. I have never worked for Apple personally, but the people making that claim said they did.

So really you don't have to download and pay twice, you buy it once and your GF buys it once. You probably also have to pay to put gas in your car and she in hers.

I don't mean to sound like a pr*ck but if your relationship is such that you don't share an iTunes account and/or are not willing to enter your account/CC on her machine, then despite living together and sharing the same internet you are two distinct users with two distinct computers and need to buy two distinct copies. I can't see how that is unfair especially at $29.99 a pop (I get the bandwidth issue further rubs salt into that wound).

There's already a published workaround for how to install the same DL'ed copy on multiple authorized machines in a household (I'll have 5 and prefer not to DL it 5 times). Wonder if you could buy & install on your machine, then buy on her machine and "cancel" the DL partway through, then use the workaround to install your copy onto hers and it would see her as authorized under her own account. Depends I suppose on when the MAS sees the software as authorized, at the time of purchase or at the time of installation.

Also temporarily signing in with your account won't give her unlimited access to your CC unless she knows your MAS password. My kids all have their own iTunes accounts with allowances, but their machines are also authorized to my account so they can access movies and iOS apps I've bought. They can't purchase anything under my account without my password though. Not 100% sure how this would work for Mac Apps, especially an OS install...
