Just in case anyone needs it spelled out for them…

Even though I think the callback is fun, I don’t really think the metaphor works in the same way. This thing isn’t reinventing glasses or helmets, it’s not glasses and it’s not a helmet in the same way the iPhone was a phone.
Still, as an Apple fan I think its a fun ad
Came here for this.

They didn't show what it can actually do at all outside of displaying the app icons. Much like the lack of event, I am finding this concerning.

And the original announcement didn't really demo much in terms of use either.

How much is there that can be demoed and displayed on a 2-D static screen? It seems to mainly run MacOS, so a demo of it would mainly be MacOS (and Apps that run on MacOS), but with a different user interface that can only be experienced. I'm not sure a video of a demo would be very compelling in any case since it would not convey the user interface feeling.

There might be two types of customers: (A) well to do folks deep in the Mac ecosystem who want an additional way to use the Mac ecosystem and (B) folks getting ready to buy their next upgraded Mac and they decide they might as well buy this instead since it is "only" about $1,000 more than buying their next MBP or Mac. The second category might be really what Apple is going for and so it is a long game.

The media controlling people's understanding of the world was bad then as well. Technology is just making it worse. First by getting us to watch an alternative reality on screens we carry everywhere... and now to replace our vision entirely.

Personally I think we need to snap ourselves out of this zombified state and get back to enjoying the world around us. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved Apple and Technology. I don't think this is some grand conspiracy or anything, it's just how things have worked out. But it really is getting unhealthy now and we need decide if going further down this road is a good idea.

This is such a weird product. But I guess typical for the Tim Cook era. In the Cook era Apple execs are good at telling us the what and the how but not the why. The only exception would be their own silicon chips but the why there is self explanatory. But iPad Pro? We still don’t know the why other than it allowed Apple to create a premium price tier in the iPad product line. I love mine but I love it because it’s an iPad with a big screen, that’s all.

We have yet to see any killer use case or app for Vision Pro. Something that would make people go “ah, I get it now” or “ooh, I want that”. It really seems like the epitome of cool tech for tech’s sake. Not a product created to solve a problem or address a market.

$3500... I'm really worried this thing is gonna get Chromecasted.

One of these "also decent" headsets that's 70% as nice and 70% cheaper might eat its lunch before Apple can get the price out of the stratosphere.

To this day, my wife has never seen the value of an Apple Watch, but she's a huge iPhone/iPad/iMac user. This could be that, but even more so.

And the Apple Watch is a TENTH of the price - so if products like that are considered expensive additional equipment to an Apple Ecosystem user, the people ready to shelve out $3500 for this might be very limited

Rich won’t buy it. People living from paycheck to paycheck will probably buy it for the hyped.its sad, but well

Neither. Developers will buy it.

I'm not rich but doing quite well. Not interested personally but others can enjoy it if they wish, however.

No, Apple. YOU get ready since you’re nowhere near ready to release this thing outside the US where I reside

The Apple Watch is the best selling wearable in the world by alot. It’s a huge seller. I don’t think the Vision Pro will be close to that because it’s not meant to be an everyone device. If it succeeds at all it’s meant to be more like a Mac Pro … a device for people with certain extreme needs.

While I agree, macOS or iPadOS versions of CAD software is a tad, well lacking.
One thing I hope is that the Vision Pro signals that eventually Apple has bigger plans for iPadOS including multi user support, more powerful programs and options to expand the power of the Vision Pro given that price point. I can dream.

I agree with everything you have said, however there is also an argument that you can more personal relationships, or even a more 'real' relationship with someone across the other side of the globe. When something becomes 3 dimensional, it becomes more real. And those reactions are more real. I believe Vision Pro is aiming for this rather than just 'gaming' goggles.
I'm not sure I agree with this. All AR headsets aim to take the user away from reality and into a VR world. That is the core essence of such technology. The concept of "mixed-AR" is a softer way to push the product to market without making Apple seem so controlling, however make no mistake; look at the products they are releasing with it. Apple are very much looking to integrate Vision Pro into every day life.

As for relationships across the globe, I do agree on this point. I have lived abroad most of my life, and social media and communication technology such as WhatsApp and iMessage have allowed me to remain in touch with my family, and have also made it affordable. It has also enabled me to maintain relationships with friends, but again, social media is by its own nature, addictive and incredibly toxic when you mix with unknowns.

Personally, I have largely abandoned platforms like Facebook, Twitter and focus on old-school forums such as this one and a few motoring forums I have been a member on for years.

Ultimately, I personally don't like the direction we are headed, but I'm pretty sure there are many who disagree with me and relish the idea of a VR world. My old boss for example loved decentralised VR worlds, and even tried to hold VR meetings which I found super strange, but went along with it; however it's not something I would use or do on my own accord.

You could replaced the VP with cell phones and you would have the same image ...
I agree. It’s just one step further away from how disconnected we are in society. I find it abhorrent how some parents in my son’s school have gifted them iPhones at the age of 6.

And yes. I am that uncle that turns off the WiFi to get my nephew and my parents off their stupid phones to return to reality.

Once I got the family reengaged, we ended up playing some amazing games like trivial pursuit, UNO and other games. Even a movie was more social. I just blamed it on my “shoddy WiFi”

I’m a town planner, and can imagine a use case whereby a Council might don these during a site visit, to visualise how a proposal would look. Steve’s presentation for Apple Park might look different in the future. I am sure he would be excited by the possibilities.

Spot-on good idea.

And I collaborated with several others in a multiplayer VR voxel-based sculpting app to make a huge scene filled with details (the video only shows a small fraction). It's a bit crude, and the walkthrough doesn't give enough time for the detail to fully load in but its a bunch more fun than the AI crap you are posting here.

You can talk to others with spatialized sound, and see their head and hands. You can scale yourself so you are a different size than other people. You can climb and jump and use a hang glider to explore the scene. I'd love to see what a bunch of imaginative kids could create.
I would personally never give such a product to a child. What’s wrong with Lego or even pen and paper? You don’t need to disconnect yourself from others and you remain connected to reality and those in the room.

This hands down beats any phone or VR headset.

(And yes we accidentally burnt the table extension this Christmas. 🤦‍♂️)
