I wouldn't doubt at all a media event sometime in the next 30 days. However, Leopard will not be released until June. That much, I can be pretty sure of. It seems that Apple would at least want to test "top secret" features they unveil to developers, and 30 days is no where near enough. Three or so months, yeah, that makes more sense.

Oh, and if theres a 3 month delay, nofreeleopardforyou!!

If there's any truth to it, then this is exactly the wrong way of doing things. Mac users know what the significance of all of these and their features are. But computer enthusiasts were never the ideal people to evaluate "smart" phones. So they pick the Mac show, an audience of Mac users, to show off a phone, and a special event, an audience of journalists and invited industry pundits, to show off the latest Mac stuff.

Ouch.

I appreciate you're excited by the Apple Telephonic Device Steve, but really... ever since you organized a special event to show off a lobotomized Intel Mac mini, iPod socks, and stereo speakers, you have to admit you haven't always chosen the right way to introduce your products.

I think this special event could happen, I mean they couldn't squeeze in the iPhone, and a Leopard preview.

They have to show these TOP SECRET FEATURES of Leopard sooner or later. I quote Steve Jobs: "There are features we are keeping very close, but we want to let you know these exist bla bla bla we don't want microsoft to copy us", he said something like that.

I like how Apple is being very conservative with the release of Leopard. They really don't need to be in any hurry.

I don't think Apple picked the wrong time or venue to introduce the iPhone. a) it was expected. Most people would have been stunned if Apple didn't show the iPhone, given all the pre-show rumors about it. b) It got a tremendous amount of press, and was major news just about everywhere. New Mac stuff probably wouldn't have gotten the same kind of attention, and this was a big enough product for Apple to use Macworld to show it (again, since it is Mac-based, unlike an iPod.

Macworld is the biggest event of the year for Apple.

Jobs obviously feels confident iPhone is much more important for Apple and the industry than iPod Hi-Fi or MacBook Merom updates. And he's probably right.

They probably should have held it a little bit earlier to steal Vista's thunder. This might actually be the first OS upgrade I'll buy without waiting until I buy a new computer.

Vista's thunder was quickly taken away when it was realized that no one would be able to run it, They would all have to go out and buy top of the line computers and only then would they have a 50% chance of getting it to work.

ha:p

Well, they dont have to worry about MS copying them since Windows Vista is out and the final version is ready in retailers stores' in the back with big stickers on the box not to sell till the 30th. :p

Wow We Suddenly Have New Food For Thought Tonight! Fantastic! And Thank You.

Here is a Good News ! Apple today released their WWDC Mac OS X State of the Union VIDEO and SLIDES for any online ADC member, i.e. anyone with an email account.

Now I can truly drool over Core Animation and such.
It contains a lot of new info about Leopard, hidden under NDA until yesterday!

Go to http://developer.apple.com/adconitunes/ !!

I recommend it to EVERYONE interested. It's so cool !
Stop trolling and feeding the troll. Watch it !
Thank you so much. This is a great new resource including 297 slides as well as an all new - to non WWDC '06 attendees - 90 minutes on Leopard. Wow 48 minutes into the video is an amazing Core Animation demo showing how future Leopard iTunes playlists may be displayed as Core Animation 3D panes made up of album art and videos playing. Amazing!

Also the Why Is Apple So Secretive? article is outstanding too. Thanks karlfranz.

maybe ad a better 3d card or a 2 duo since there people upgrading the processor anyway i would by a mac mini but with the windows games that ill be playing id have to go for a imac

While it's certainly true that the mini's form factor limits potential update options (particularly vis a vis video), it's equally true that the current superdrive mini is, at 799 Euros here, of dubious economic value. I think we will see either a price drop or RAM upgrade with the slotting of a C2D, at which point the machine will once again be a good headless option for folks who don't need pro specs. As far as when, well...we might as well put the pros, the minis, the MBPs and even iMacs in a very big hat and pull them out at random.

And a postscript on the above idiocy from the now-banished Birdie: as Zadillo hints at but doesn't quite say, we should all remember that we CREATE the secrecy by playing the game...it's no fun to chase something that doesn't try to escape. It's supposed to be fun to anticipate new stuff and BS about it, even when we don't get what we want for a few months. Apple has this relationship with (some of) its customers because we have something MS users don't (at least I don't think they do; I've never gone trolling on Windows forum pages). Why bother reading forums and wasting your time posting if you don't enjoy it? Just go on with your life and check the apple website once a month if all you want is to buy.

That being said, if I don't get an updated mini soon I'm going postal  .

Saturday release dates

Ah, I stand corrected.

Now, the 24th makes even more sense since it would be the 6th anniversary of the first release of OSX

Also, 10.2 was released on a Saturday - August 24, 2002. 10.1 was released on a Tuesday - Sept 25, 2001, 10.3 was released on Oct 24, 2003, a Friday, and 10.4 was released April 29, 2005 also a Friday.

/vjl/

the only part i'm doubting is the release of leopard...from what i've seen it's not nearly finished yet...and if apple's incorporating more GUI and finder changes it won't be until june when leopard surfaces, IMO.
Tend to agree... I would say that Apple needs to show what it's got some time soon, then iron out the kinks with beta testers' help.

This day is as good as any to show 10.5. Who knows if the rumour is all made up though!

Dear Uncle Steve,

Please can we have a some new toys please,

lots of love,

Us Mac Users

PS. We likes them computers

Ya, I am ready. Had my Macbook Pro 2 months, time for a new one. I will buy it. Definitely buy Leopard !!! Let's go Steve, before they take you to court.........

The release date of the PS3 has been 'confirmed' as the 23rd of March in Europe... Would Apple really want to compete with that in terms of headlines etc?

Either way, if it was released on the 24th, it'd be a week after my 21st, so that'd be a free copy for me! :p

The thing that bugs me is that people are gonna moan and whine if Apple doesn't show anything, then when they *do* show it, it'll be "Where was this? Why doesn't it do this?" etc... Some people just won't be satisfied...

Ah well,Tiger's doing it's job for me right now, and when Leopard comes out I'll probably in a massive queue at the Apple store to get a copy, but no matter how much I'd like to see it, I'm not beating myself up over the release date

I really doubt Leopard will get an event for it's release.

I don't know if I agree with this. So in your opinion, we'll all go to macrumors one day and the top news story will be this:

"Apple quietly releases Leopard
Sunday April 29, 2007 02:38 PM EST

Although no special event was planned and no release date was announced in advance, Apple has quietly updated their OS today to 10.5. The new OS is available for order online and in physical Apple Stores starting today. Industry experts everywhere — that is, those who could be reached for comment on a Sunday — are puzzled at Apple's choice for a quiet release of the much anticipated and most significant update to OS X in two years"

I don't care how behind they may or may not be on Leopard, there will be some event to show it off. As FF_productions mentioned, Steve promised special features. While Apple likes to give people little surprises, they're not going to make them go by the OS and try to figure out what all the new features are in Leopard, they're bound to announce them at some point, even if it's only shortly before Leopard is released. And it doesn't seem the kind of thing they would announce with just a press release, it will either be at some event where Steve or someone at Apple can show it off, whether specifically just for Leopard or as part of something else.

To be fair, Chundles said it wouldn't likely get a special event for its actual release. A release event would be an event that occurs on its release date. What you are talking about is an event to unveil the secret features of Leopard, which does seem likely, and would presumably be before its actual release.

I guess I can see what you mean and that's probably what Chundles meant. Normally Apple doesn't have events on the actual day the OS is released, does it? I wasn't expecting one, and I think most people are just thinking about an event a week, a month, etc. before its release saying what (additional) features are going into it and announcing when the release date will be. With Tiger, all its features were pretty much shown to us in advance of the release date.

With Leopard, we've been shown a few nuggets and been told more is on the way. I may be wrong, but if the features are important enough that Apple wanted to keep them under wraps so Microsoft wouldn't start their photocopiers, they are important/exciting enough to be demonstrated to people before the Leopard is released.

Yeah,Apple doesn't normally do events for OS releases. However, they have sometimes had special events at the Apple Stores on release day.

But it would not be unusual for Apple to have a special event to finally show the secret Leopard features before it is actually released.

The Big Leopard Event Will Be At All Apple Stores On First Evening It Goes On Sale

Release date will be announced several weeks in advance of the "for sale" date and the "Event" will be at all the Apple Stores Worldwide the evening of the first day - usually a Friday at 6PM local time - it will go on sale. So all you on the east coast will have it installed 3 hours before us on the west coast. However, last time, Tiger pre-orders were delivered on the day before or the morning of the day it went on sale at the Apple Stores in the evening. :)

Due to the "TOP SECRET" announcement at WWDC '06, a Pre-Sale Event to explain those features would probably help sell a lot more of them when it does ship. So I agree it's a likely scenario this time 'round.

I still think he had planned to show off the macbook at that event, then had to switch at the last minute. so everyone lay off steve for making one little mistake, we got the laptops a month later, didn't we?
