This whole taking the store offline thing is not because they need to, but because they want to.
Of course an IT company like Apple is capable of updating it's store without downtime.
They use this gimmick purely to draw attention to the event.

I'm not sure if it's entirely a gimmick. Apple has something that survives under an absolute deluge of pre-order traffic. Look at how the likes of Microsoft coped with Xbox Series X/S pre-orders. Their stores were constantly crashing, as were many online retailers who were acting as resellers. And there's no way they were flooded with the kind of traffic Apple gets when launching a new product.

I have a feeling this event is going to be one of the most memorable Apple events in my life. Super excited, and hopeful for the future of Macs.

The mood seems to be a bit different than the mood when Apple switched from PPC to Intel. Due to Apple marketing, many believed that PPC was far superior to Intel, so was a bit of skepticism about the switch.

I am so ready for this. I know the iMac won't be a part of this, but seeing this will hopefully be an indicator of what to expect later.

Curious what the 16" MBP will be about as well.

Apple Store Goes Down Ahead of Apple Event Today, Apple "ARM Processor" Macs Expected to Debut. Get it straight instead of making things up or trying to event something new that is like 40 years old. Typical Apple self righteousness

What they do with the high-end 16" MBP will be fascinating especially differentiating from the lower end models. It shows how confident Apple is though if they immediately transition their most powerful laptop to Apple Silicon from day one.

My 2013 iMac 27" died last night. No power whatsoever, no matter what I reset or swap. I take this as a possible sign to buy what is announced today, lol. Although I really like the large screen, so I don't think today will help me much.

This is going to be an interesting event for sure. Even if Apple keep the same design for the Mac’s, it’s the Apple Silicone that I want to hear about.

I will also want to know if it will be worth selling my 2019 13” MBP for an Apple silicone Mac. I guess time will tell.

But how is taking the store offline before the event helping to cope with the traffic after the event? If at all, they would scale up their store servers before or during the event, not shut them down.
And the fact that their store survives the insane traffic makes me believe even more that taking it down for an update is not required, but a gimmick.

We’ll have to see if their “you haven’t seen us when we’re trying” comment about CPU power turns out to be another “can’t innovate my ass” moment.

I'm interested exactly because we've seen absolutely no leaks or rumours about these products. I hope finally, ***** finally there will be some industrial design updates too, that don't just involve bezel trimming.

We have seen leaks from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, there will be no design changes. Todays event is about Apple Silicone, they will put it in the existing Macs. Bigger design changes are rumoured to be coming next year (new iMac and a 14” MacBook Pro with Apple silicone). At least that’s whats leaked/rumoured.
