I plugged in my 12PM phone and APP into a wall charger, let the lid open and had them sitting next to each other for about 15 minutes. The APP updated and then the case second. Just give it some time and it will happen.

This worked for me. Thank you for posting! Within 10 minutes midday update was complete (iPhone 12 mini running iOS 14.8 paired with APP). -KM

Edit to add: Wi-fi connected

Any tips for getting the Max to update the firmware? My Pro’s updated pretty quickly, but the Max‘s don’t want to update for some reason. I have them out of the case now, and plugged in next to my charging iPhone. Wasn’t sure if there was something else people have found work to force the update on the Max.

Seriously why the *** is it so *** hard to get these to update. No manual option, I mean seriously Apple?

I have left both in charge overnight, I tried the open lid and both charging. I tried listen for 30seconds and charge. None of them start the update.

🤬

Just get on with your life, you’ll be fine!

13 hours now, no updates.
With past updates I have always had success with:
1) Listen to music for a minute
2) Place Airpods Pro in case
3) Connect case to charger

The firmware would update within a few minutes. It took forever this time.

What about reading a bit?

Switch devices automatically

Your AirPods (2nd generation) or AirPods Pro can automatically switch between your Mac with macOS Big Sur, iPhone with iOS 14, and iPad with iPadOS 14 or later. Your devices need to be signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. For example, while listening to music on your Mac, you answer a call on your iPhone. Your AirPods automatically switch from the music on your Mac to the phone call on your iPhone.
In some situations, you'll see a notification about your AirPods on the screen of your Mac. When you hold the pointer over the notification, a Connect button appears. Click Connect to confirm that you want your AirPods to switch to—or stay with—your Mac.
If you want to turn automatic switching off for your Mac, open Bluetooth preferences on your Mac with your AirPods in your ears. Click the Options button next to your AirPods in the list of devices. Click Connect to This Mac, and then choose When Last Connected to This Mac. To turn this feature on again, choose Automatically.
Sound should not automatically switch from one device to another if you're in a conversation, like a phone call, a FaceTime call, or a video conference.

Right. This:

“For example, while listening to music on your Mac, you answer a call on your iPhone. Your AirPods automatically switch from the music on your Mac to the phone call on your iPhone.”

is similar to the behavior I’m describing that only inconsistently works. So I’m not sure how you interpreted what i said but it wasn’t any different than this.

Same. This is a joke. Leaving the freaking lid open? Tim Cook’s Apple sucks.

Right there with you. It's long past time Apple allowed customers to update their headphone firmware manually without having to stand on one leg and hop in a circle while keeping the lid open on your headphones case and plugging in your 1992 Mac LCIII but not turning it on.

I'm not sure what's wrong but if I try leaving the lid open they drop from connected on the iPhone after a couple minutes. How is it going to update the firmware if it won't stay connected? They work fine with my phone but I cannot switch devices without repairing to anything but my iPhone. I was hoping a firmware update would help but my AirPod Pros are still on 3A283

For those that have been able to get the update. Is ANC any better and what about calls as mine are almost unusable right now due to background noise!

I had done all that. But the Airpods Pro did finaly update after changing wifi networks. Still no go on the Powerbeats Pro though.

Same here. Tried it with my iPad and left it all night, and still nothing. Trying again with my iPhone this morning and so far, nothing's happening. Also tried the listen to a song and then put the powerbeats back in the case trick. Didn't work.

Do the Powerbeats even have a new firmware version? Maybe that information about an update is inaccurate.

I don't understand this leaving the case open stuff. There are millions of these out there in the wild that "normal" (non-techie) people have and would not know about this having to leave the lid open. Why would Apple do that? How would they ever get the update? I did not leave the lid open and my regular AirPods gen 2 updated just fine after about 30 minutes. Just think about this for a minute...

You may have a point. I closed the Airpods Pro case and took it with me to go somewhere, and when I came back, and opened it up, the Airpods Pro were already updated.

Those same millions you speak of don’t even know there is an update either. So they don’t concern themselves with it.

Yep, closed the case to my Powerbeats Pro, and after 15 minutes, opened them up - and updated.

I think leaving the case open is detrimental to updating.

You must be on the beta since that’s not there for me.
From a post in Mac Rumors.
Settings > control center > make sure hearing is active (position it where you want) > exit settings.
Pair your AirPods and set to transparency
Activate hearing from control center swipe down
