Got mine on Thursday as an impromptu replacement for my SE, which I dropped on Tuesday, shattering its face. That SE was my first Apple watch. I only had if for a little over a year but I really enjoyed it, especially for the fitness tracking but also for Apple Pay and occasional texting and calling. It convinced me that I am an Apple watch person.
When the Ultra came out I thought it looked great and figured it would be my next watch, but probably not for a couple more years or so. But I decided I'd way rather buy an Ultra than spend $200-250 to fix my SE, plus Verizon offered me $120 off and no interest payments so I pulled the trigger.
I am extremely pleased with the watch. I think the design is stunning and far more interesting than the other series. The durability is a big plus, obviously, and those factors alone make it a worthwhile upgrade. I mean, people pay thousands of dollars for watches with premium materials and build qualities and this is no Rolex by any means, but the build quality easily justifies the price and to me it seems like a no-brainer for just a bit more than the stainless steel models, though I've never owned one so that's an assumption to some extent. I wear it about 16 hours every day, after all.
The Action Button is a really nice feature, one touch to the Workout app for me. I'm also running the noise app as a complication and I'm kind of irrationally obsessed with that. I guess it is available on the other models but never noticed.
The watch is a bit bulkier than I'm used to, but I think I'm getting used to it and I do appreciate the larger display. I love that all of my old bands are compatible with the Ultra. My blue leather link band looks great on it. I also really like the Starlight Alpine band that came with mine; it's an understatedly elegant, almost origami-like design. I kind of wanted green but got Starlight due to availability an I'm glad I did. As always, though, the Apple bands are way overpriced. I preordered a Sandmarc Titanium band as I think an all-titanium kit will be well worth the $200 added investment.
In short, I feel like I've stumbled onto a classic here and I'm almost glad I busted my SE. I think the Ultra finally ties together the functionality of Apple watches with the aesthetic appeal of more traditional timepieces.
