It's really interesting that you call it unreliable when there's nothing that points to it. No true review of the product, other than a few quick hands-on experiences. Yet, you call it a failure. Is it because of the Microsoft logo?
Yes, it's a niche machine. It's the first release of a new line of products, and possibly a new category (or at least sub-category). It's the first high end hardware by a company that was ridiculed just two days prior. That machine is not made to sell in significant quantities because that machine aims at the Mac Pro professionals first, and those between the iMac-Mac Pro later. It's niche for now, but be sure that they will release different sizes, different specs etc. once they figure out assembly problems. They would be stupid in doing otherwise.
You see, the problem for Apple is not the product itself. It's the fact that Microsoft announced to the world that it's back in the game, and it's serious this time. It shows to the world that Microsoft now dares, and it does not shy away from failures (for God's sake... Nadella admitted how much Windows Phone suck!). It shows that they have a deep, clear vision. That is: the opposite of Apple.
As for the product itself, I can't say. Yesterday my sister in Europe saw the videos and spoke to me on the phone for about an hour. She and her husband are professional artists, and they also teach at an arts academy. They are deeply excited about it; she told me that her colleagues see that machine as the perfect answer to all their prayers since the iPad was first released. It's what they have been waiting for. I don't know if it solves all their problems (I can barely draw a stick figure...), and I don't know the arts and entertainment industry. However, I can't fail to notice that the Surface Studio generated the buzz that used to be generated by Apple Computer Inc.
You may see faults in the product, I see a new push within the industry.
Huge detachable hinge and battery problems. Google is your friend.
And where exactly did I call it a "failure"? "Niche" is not "fail", but a machine starting at $3000 is definitely niche.
