I always think waiting is a good idea. That's simply because most bugs will be reported and the major ones will be fixed. However, I also no longer buy first iterations either.

My guess is that screen unevenness and tint shifts are inherent in OLED and not a bug or quality control issue, therefore not likely to be addressed by Apple. I'm sure Apple employees would say every one of these problem screens are within specification. I've taken multiple devices with LCD screens that I consider uneven or with yellow tints in for replacement and while they are replaced, no one at Apple ever admits to seeing the problem. If you're unhappy with your screen and don't want to get into the return lottery it makes sense to wait until the next iteration. If you just wait a couple of months nothing is likely to change and you might as well wait for next year's phone.

Guys. Here’s the deal. All OLED screens will shift color when viewed from a different angle. So that’s normal. Looking straight on they all look about the same.

*Most iPhone X will shift into a slight pink color then at extreme angle, blue, that’s normal. You should feel good.

*However, few screens will shift more pink, that’s pretty annoying.

*Very few screens shifts directly into blue, some people like it, think it’s a “white” screen, some don’t. I personally think the blue screens look like Pixel 2 XL screens, so I don’t like it.

    Here’s some examples: [IMG]

I think shifting to blue is okay. Pink is just a hideous color. That's my personal opinion. Heh.

    You're right though.

My new Space Gray X is just basically as close to pure white that I'm going to get...And no signs of yellow looking straight on.

Tilted back a little and i get a slight hint of cool blue, which I'm fine with. Cool color temperature on a phone is what i like, absolutely hate warm screens.

Weird thing I just noticed about True Tone: if you turn on Smart Invert in the Accessibility settings, it also inverts the colour temperature adjustment True Tone makes to the display. So instead of everything taking on what looks to my eyes like a very yellow hue with True Tone, it takes on a blue hue.

Any opinion on my previous post? Glad to receive your feedback guys.

Tomorrow i'll go to an apple store to have a check with the floor models.

Anyway, i'm getting in in love with the silver model, maybe i'll swap for that reason o_O

Honestly I think I hit the lottery with my phone. Compared to the complaints I’ve been seeing, flickering, green line, my phone is pretty solid right now I will stick with this. I’m satisfied.

( *please note I'm not bashing the X. It really is an amazing piece of technology and we can all be certain millions of people will be over the moon with their purchase. It wasn't right for me and that's personal opinion. I would never discourage anyone from buying or keeping theirs.)

Apple have their display models with auto brightness off, brightness 100% and truetone on. I switched on auto brightness, switched off truetone to match mine as this is how I would use it daily.

15 floor models in my local store. Most were yellowish when tilted slightly which washed out the other colours = terrible. Some were like mine, a bit pink/yellow. some shifted to Blue and didn't look as bright as mind. Two looked fantastic and very uniform with minimum shift. These were the ones.

Because of these two models I considered going with my replacement but due to the stress of the day getting to the store, the agonising over the quality of mine for a week and the fact I'd be entering the panel lottery I decided to just return for refund. Two out of 16 phones in front of me does not make good odds.

One of the store staff said "well there will be variances in displays". Really, you just said that?! All screens made by Samsung, all calibrated by Apple. Shouldn't they all be the same. He said this isn't how oled works and despite this being dangerous as an Apple employee to say at least he was honest and clearly I agree.

    Back on the 7 plus.

Considering the 8+ although I don't think it justify the upgrade enough for me. Even considering a switch to Android for several reasons but one is ios11 is a buggy mess. The one solid reason to stick with the iphone is ios but if it continues to roll out with less features than Android and has just as many bugs why should I stick with it? Alot more choice in hardware and features on the other side of the fence. But I'm just day dreaming.

Left is good enough. Middle is pink like my returned model. Right is yellow and the most common display I've seen. At least this is how this picture looks to me on my 7+

I just got back from the Apple Store here. I looked at every iPhone X compared to my iPhone 8 and my iPhone 8 display was WAY nicer, crisper, whiter and more colorful. Nice job AGAIN Apple....You just can't get it right....

There should be absolutely NO difference in color on the iPhone X if Apple is using only one outsourcing partner for displays and in this case I believe that they are only using Samsung at the moment from what I've read.

So if I'm correct, SHAME on you Apple for once again failing with quality control and acceptance of defective displays.

Having said that, Apple has had poorly calibrated inconsistencies in every iOS device they've sold. You either won or lost the lottery of getting a device with a proper screen.

If you knew OLED teechnology you would know that due to moufacturing contingencies, even from the ame supplier, it is impossible to assure that each and every panel will shift to a same color tone, as OLED panels are that impredictible to produce.
It is a matter of technology characteristics, it is part of OLED.
When Apple decided to move to OLED, these "issues" were more than expected.
Only those who think that Apple miraculously fix everything could think that the iPhone X OLED panels would be different from all the OLED panels in the market.

Just curious: how do you know most displays will shift pink and then blue and that’s normal compared to other variances?

I have 7 of them laying around in the office. Different carriers, colors, factories, weeks. Most of them color shift that way and very close in colors. Only the 2 shown in the pictures are perceivably different from the rest.

I really think a lot of this is because not all , but most iPhone users are used to LCD phone panels and are not necessarily accustomed to OLED behavior. Yes, some are bad and there may be inconsistencies, but I don’t believe these panels are gonna be much different at all for the duration of this cycle than they are now.

Well I picked up my 4th 256gb silver on Friday afternoon and I can say it is slightly brighter, whiter and the shift isn’t as great. It isn’t a huge difference but I think it will be a keeper. Now to return my original.

Okay so I just went to the place I bought it (Verizon store) and they were no help at all. Just said this is normal meanwhile compared to the other model there and it was clearly brighter than mine and less yellow. The guy just told me it’s not gonna be exactly the same with the OLED and suggested keeping it or just getting a different phone

Go to Apple with problems like these. Verizon won't do much for you regardless.

From reading the thread, sounds like Verizon did the same thing Apple is going to do. They just got there without opening a half dozen boxes first.

The X HAS really changed the game for buying a smartphone. It really is like playing the lottery. You give your money and hope that you may be treated with the prize of a working copy?
