Please don't flame - this is my personal experience and I'm not trying to bash.

I am returning my iphone 4.

I've had two on different networks, and I cannot believe how bad these things are at obtaining reception and 2G/3G /3.5G handovers. Unless you are on HSDPA, forget about using any data services. I've been using it side by side with a Galaxy S on the same network, and whilst the reception hasn't varied hugely between them, the Galaxy S smokes the IP4 for data and rendering time for web pages. The IP4 sits there thinking for about 15 secs, and Galaxy S just gets on with it. If it has a HSDPA signal, its usable. If it doesn't, forget it.

And that's not even holding the phone in my hand, so no death grip issues here. Coincidentally, the Galaxy S's reception also plummets when you grip it!

it's a shame, because the UI, Apps and general user experience are completely unrivalled by any device from any manufacturer. Also, the phone looks and feels amazing. The galaxy S just seems like a toy in comparison (but that screen is AMAZING...).

Like I said though, as a device this thing is untouchable. I'll be surprised if anyone ever catches up with Apple!

I'm secretly hoping that Apple will issue a revised IP4 (perhaps when the white one comes out and the bumper scheme finishes??)

If you're coming from an iPhone 3GS, like myself, then the iPhone 4 is an awful experience - the 3GS just has such terrific reception

Again, the iPhone 3G is even worse than the iPhone 4, mainly because the processor is so damn slow

I'm convinced that those who LOVE the iPhone 4 are either fresh iPhone users or came from the iPhone or iPhone 3G

Without using the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 seems terrific - those of us who were on 3GS know the potential and remain disappointed

iPhones in terms of greatness -

1. iPhone 3GS - great construction and excellent reception, with no dropped calls - and very fast

2. iPhone 4 - this isn't saying much

3. iPhone original - solid phone, but lacked 3G speeds at a time when it was standard on most smartphones

4. iPhone 3G - just a terrible processor made for a terrible experience

I got the iPhone 32gb on the 1st and I am loving this phone. I'm coming from blackberry Tour (verizon) and the coverage is just as good. I have no problem what so ever.

Well I've got to jump back in here and say I'm amazed...once again. I was in Worst I mean Best Buy today picking up a copy of Windoze 7 for a customer requested install. Lo and behold they had a couple of freshly arrived IP4s. I could not resist (even though it was/is the so called "dreaded" A1332 82xxxx series) and pulled the trigger on another 32GB.

This phone is indeed stunning. The look, the feel, the RECEPTION yes I said reception as in the phone reception - all hands down my best iPhone experience yet. I've had every iPhone to date all purchased on launch day except the iP4. Not only do I get phone service in area's even my mighty and beloved (and shattered beyond repair) 3GS did not, but I get decent phone service...even inside buildings! That alone is enough to sell me on being glad I pulled the trigger. I have not been able to reproduce any antennae issue or proximity issue thus far. One nice thing about BB is no hassle no restock fee within 30 days, but it seems that Apple has granted that to any and all purchases of the iP4 considering the "issues" so widely reported. I figured I could not go wrong but don't think I'll be returning this any time soon. Now to start shooting the twins in HD! I'm a happy f:apple:nboy once again. :D

I finally got an iPhone (4, my first) so I thought I'd post my first impressions after having it a few days...

First of all, overall, I love it. I'm glad I waited this long though, because until now there were always little things about the previous models that I knew would have bugged me - I mean from the first model to the 3GS - 3G, the quality of camera, copy & paste, ringtones stupidness... etc etc

One by one those obstacles have vanished, and at the same time I've built up a nice collection of iOS apps for my iPod Touch (and then iPad) in the meantime.

So ... reception issues....
I have had the phone in a couple of locations. One is out in the country, where my reception was always bad, on any phone. It didn't seem particularly worse or better really. Had to go upstairs to make sure I didn't drop a call, low bars, patchy 3G access. Pretty much the same as my old Sony phone then. Secondly, in a much more urban area near a city. Predictably, reception is much much better. The only place I noticed a slight drop in signal strength was in a department store's electronics section, which isn't altogether strange I guess. I could still make calls fine there though. I am using a thin Griffin case, but I would have got one anyway, regardless of the reported reception issues people have had. So I'm kind of happy with that too.

I was kind of pleased with how heavy and substantial it feels. It feels like a really well-built, hefty piece of kit. Beautiful object, it was kind of sad to put a case and screen protector on... And the screen, oh, the screen is just gorgeous.

Now my one major gripe / rant. And it's work-arondable, but it's fairly annoying, and surprising (both the issue and the fact I hadn't been aware of this somehow despite frequenting sites like MR a lot...!) - and that is iTunes won't let me drag music / media manually to the phone on more than one computer. It was a seriously 'lolwut?!' moment. Surely not? But apparently so. It makes less than no sense and I really hope it changes in future.

I had assumed the iPod aspect of the iPhone would work like... (guess!?) and iPod!! Typically, with my iPods I will start off copying over my favourite albums and stuff, then just manually add/delete stuff when I feel like it. Especially podcasts, which I generally delete every so often, but keep on the computer. If I am away with my laptop and I've downloaded some stuff on there, I just drag it over. If I'm at home on my desktop, where the vast majority of my library is, I use that. Fine.

Why in the name of all that is Apple can't I do the same on an iPhone?!
I understand the sense in reserving automatic syncing and/or syncing one's contacts and even apps to one machine... but seriously why does Apple care if I want to put some music on from one of my other machines?!

Just bizarre. So far I've seen a hacky solution online that I'd rather not get into, but it all seems so unnecessary. I would love someone to make look foolish tell me I'm missing something really obvious that makes this problem go away, but for me this is the weak point of the iPhone experience so far. Otherwise though, I'm very happy with it, it's a fantastic device.

Dual Subscriber 3GS to 4

I am on a dual service family plan of two subscribers, one of us located in Evanston, Illinois and the other in Dublin, Ohio. Like yin and yang, I prefer Microsoft while my partner prefers an Apple – so the choice of the iPhone 3GS was more my partner’s decision and I must admit my fascination with the device grew as I became aware of all the features. My partner was especially excited when he convinced me to buy a Macbook Pro - I love the Apple hardware – however I still prefer to operate under a boot camp of Windows 7.

This summer, because of a discount we received for the new iPhone 4 and because of the Facetime feature, since we live in separate cities, we decided to make the jump. Now we have had the bumper since we first acquired the new phone – so perhaps this has prevented us from dropping calls because of the antenna; however, I don’t cover that area anyways when I talk. Prior to either of the two versions of the iPhones – I was on Sprint, I never once dropped a call in my apartment or on my drive home; however, now that I have switched to AT&T – either the iPhone or the service provider really sucks in maintaining a call.

The number of dropped calls is so bad, AT&T identified us to receive one of those free MicroCells. Now maybe it’s just our luck with AT&T – but the MicroCell is even worse than the cell network. The MicroCell plugs into your link out to the Internet and extends the signal to only the 10 phone numbers you specify. My Internet is a business connection with a static IP on the outside and 30mbps down 10mbps up – plenty of bandwidth; however, we have turned it off due to its poor quality. Often calls are dropped or the person I am talking to stutters and we have to end and call back to stop the digital stuttering effect. Also it’s not just my phone – my partner also has had the same issue while on the MicroCell…

Facetime is neat – but we have not had luck maintaining a conversation – every single instance of a conversation has at some point failed. We have simply come to terms with the “Beep Dup” – “Call Failed” and are back to the.. “So I was at the supermarket… are you there? – good, and picked up some milk… still with me? great! Went home afterwards… have I lost you?... (Beep Dup)” – redial…

At my school where I work with the technology for the district – all the administration use the iPhone (3G – 3GS and now on the iPhone 4) and every single one of them (I know, cause I work with them on new technology), including the ones that favor Apple report inconsistent quality and continuous dropped calls. We have deemed the iPhone a fantastic device for everything but phone calls.

Let me put it into perspective, I was on a phone interview with Microsoft (no I did not get the job, perhaps pulling my MacBook Pro out during the face to face interview with my iPhone next to it to tether through Handylight was a bit much for them) – during my phone interview I dropped the call 3 times before switching over to the Skype app.

Don’t get me wrong, I love it – but I would love it even more if it worked as a phone also. I have at times considered abandoning the phone and getting my old Sprint phone back online while using the iPhone as though it were an iPod Touch with 3G. There isn’t a day that goes by where I am not messing with it while on the train/plane/in the car while driving and eating a hamburger and switching music tracks while talking to my partner on the Bluetooth – which now works again after the version 4.1 update (on a MyGig UConnect system). I like having the data services at my fingertips – the option of Facetime is great, when it works… I even Jailbroke my phone – did the whole Facetime while on 3G – added the cool styles to the lock screen (switched back cause I wanted Bluetooth to work) – the phone is wonderful for trips – have traveled to China, Europe and most recently South America – and Skype is fantastic – to make calls through this app for pennies just cannot be beat – heck I might as well drop our phone minutes to the minimum and just switch over to Skype, I think it may operate better :).

It’s a love-hate relationship – but overall the features – minus the phone – just cannot be beat. I also acquired the incase slider – be forewarned, if you have the ZAGG front/back protectors – don’t bother with this case – I tried boiling the case hoping to bend the edges without luck… I ended up ruining my front/back protectors – it does; however, fit perfectly without the screen protectors – if you get the forward protector – just use a paper cutter to slice off a little bit of the sides & corners to make it fit accordingly.

If you use the Apple bumper case, no old USB cables that have the clips you pinch to withdraw the cable will work. There is not enough clearance in the case for the cable to make contact – unless you want to stand there the whole time pushing the cable in… And no, with the bumper on you cannot dock the phone into a universal thing a mi jig… hence why I bought the slider.

My partner’s service in Ohio, although not as bad as in Chicago, shares equal difficulty – he used Verizon previously and never experienced dropped calls like we do now. In comparison to the 3GS – noticeably longer battery life in the iPhone4 – I feel like they are similar in call quality, maybe more dropped calls with the version 4 – perhaps it’s AT&T’s coverage – or Apple may be better at making high quality equipment but lacks with designing good reception. I am not qualified to say as I have only used the iPhone while with AT&T.

It offers a lot, but if you are on a phone interview, better use a friends or find a pay phone :)

Upgraded from a 3g to the iPhone 4 today. initial impressions? Wow! Man is this thing fast, the screen is gorgeous, the camera blows the 3g completely away. I'll post more in a week, but I'm loving it so far.

Mother of GOD this!

I had the iPhone 3G and the 4 is like living through the second coming of Christ compared to that phone. My girlfriend has the 3Gs and I've got to say....if I had a 3Gs and dropped the coin for the 4 I would be pissed.

So far I haven't had any dropped calls or hang-ups with the 4 but it's easily 10000X better than my 3G ever was.

I felt the same way when I moved on to iPhone 4 from iPhone 3G. I love my iPhone 4.

Made the jump from Android

I typically carry my phone, iPod touch (1st Gen), and digital camera for casual shooting when I'm out and about. On the weekend, I got the iPhone 4 and I have to say that its changed my life. Before, I'd freqently find myself listenting to my iPod and maybe playing a casual game when my phone would ring and I'd scramble to pull my earbuds out and answer the call. It seems so trival but having the iPhone 4 and using the supplied headset with mic/controls gives me a single unified device when I'm on the go. I use the iPod app for music, use the controsl for handling volume and track management (which the first gen iPod touch did not do well), take a call hands free when it comes in without fighting to switch devices and take pictures on the go and post to facebook/twitter/etc. I'm very impressed with the smoothness of the experience and how cohesive the overall integration is when switching from one app to another. I was initially concerned that when I left Android, I'd lose the multitasking and app switching capabilities that I had come to love. In fact, the iPhone 4 experiences is smoother and faster overall. No regrets here, no way I'm going back.

explain bolded items. i'm coming from a 2g, then 3g, (brother has 3gs) and now the 4. i loved the form factor, no antenna or signal issues, screen is leaps and bounds better than the previous gen and so are the speakers. speed may not be that much faster than the 3gs but a better feel to the phone, better camera and screen and battery make the phone a good upgrade. it's not like the 3gs was amazingly better than the 3g, just faster.

1st impression: Wow this thing feels fragile in my hands. Honestly the volume button feels so shakey and when i hold it i feel like im will drop it in time. Though this is solved after i placed a case, it feels much more "handful" and solid in my hands right now. Somehow comparing to my itouch 1G, it's not a great improvement in the iOS. After so many years i did expect a great leap of experience on the iphone 4 but nope i didn't get it. The way the iOS works is pretty much the same, just faster.

The retina display is WOW, i can't believe i actually could look at my itouch 1G for so long and i thought that was good. Looking back now it looks so grainy lol. The speed is waaaay faster than the my previous itouch and to add it looks waaaaay sexier :p; the glassback is amazingly nice and the smoothness the iphone 4 has, it is unrivaled.

Haven't tried out any paid apps yet since i still have to get an itunes card (and not able to jailbreak it yet since it's 4.1 preloaded). Still haven't tried all the features yet but it's pretty good. Overall, this is my 1st iphone and im loving it, somehow i like the iPad better though.

I´ve had a very good first impression with the iPhone 4. Coming from an iPhone 3G, i immediately noticed how speedy this new device is.
I have to point out that i´ve got no reception issues this far. As Steve Jobs said, this issue has been blown way out of proportion by the press. I´m glad i don´t give a rats ass about journalist opinions anymore.

The display is gorgous, i´ve never seen anything that crisp, clean and clear before. The iPhone itself does feel very fragile without a case, which is why i´m using my old Sena Leather Case until i purchase a new one made for the iPhone 4. I´ve never used an iPhone without a case before and I probably never will, so this is not a big deal.

I upgraded a from a 2G so you can imagine my first impressions of the IP4. Too much to type.

I share the same experience in terms of 3GS performance. 3GS had excellent reception, no dropped calls and after updating to 4.0 was just as fast as iPhone4, not noticeable for the most part. 3GS was flawless and I hated to part with it for $300.

I am happy with the iPhone 4, only if I can make the proximity sensor issue go away.I love the screen and the camera, other than that its not that much of an upgrade.

Well, I just picked up my wife's 1st gen iPod touch after having used the iPhone 4 for the last couple of weeks and WOW is the screen difference ever obvious. I don't think I noticed specifically that the ip4 was so sharp when I got it but looking at the iPod screen after is insanely obvious. There's no going back...

didn't really appreciate the boxy look of it at first but was used to the curvy feel of the 3GS, but it has grown into me.

Got mine today. No 3g signal in my flat!
First call, dropped due to me holding the phone with my left hand, Im left handed.
Case arrives tomorrow, hope it solves that issue.

Went to my local Tesco store and 3G signal was 5 Bars, so some reprieve their!

Still feel like maybe I should have waited for the revised version.

Lets hope the case stops the signal loss. The antenna must be very week.

My serial starts with a 7, dose that mean it an early model?

I had a 3G and it was so slow and sluggish. It just got worse with every update since 2008. I ditched and I have a temporary cheap phone now.

I like the 4's look and features (screen quality, camera, video) but I'm going to wait because obviously there are antenna issues.

For those about to jump on my case about that statement, I will say this:

If the next version has the same issue at the same degree of loss, then I can say that the 4 doesn't have an issues :) . I'm confident the next revision, whether it's a 4a version or a 5, won't have this issue. :D

I just bought my iPhone 4, and I really believe this antenna issues if over exaggerated. Not a single drop call so far.

If I hold the iPhone in a certain form I do see a decrease in signal, but nothing major. It goes from 5 to 2 bars, but you can still make perfectly good calls and download data at same speed as when you have 5 bars.

Just saying because I see no point in waiting for an unknown and uncertain change.

I live in Central London, in my home the bars go from 4 (Sometimes!) to 1 most of the time, and in death grip too "Searching" (Without a case). (Im left handed)

I can live with its week reception, because everything else just makes up for it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wish I didn't have to put a case on it though! As the GelaSkins Look amazing on this tiny iPhone!

OMG Just tethered my iphone to my macbook. Its free on three network in the uk! Thats a first and required jail breaking in the past! Another positive plus of the iP4!

PS My new Incipio Feather Case has solve all my reception problem! Now I can get 3g in my home! Thank God! ;)

If your waiting for the iphone 5 DONT!!! this is the best most advance all in one ever, and you just will love it more and more!!
