I think it's pretty unreasonable to assume that a watch isn't going to get banged and scratched up all over the place. It's just part of the deal. Accept the scratches and move on, or it's going to torment you, because many more scratches are likely coming, if you wear the watch for a few years.

Not sure what you do with your watch but I use it to look at the time...not to bash it around

Point being that anything worn externally on the wrist is going to take a lot more abuse than something that you get out of your pocket from time to time, like a phone.

My Rolex has nicks and gashes all over it. It's just what happens to watches, so I wouldn't stress about it.

This... Exactly.

They let you return it with a scratch on the screen??

Too many questions.

I just returned mine. I can't justify a $400 watch with a screen that will scratch. 13 days in, already a scratch. Body is fine. Sport. I just can't imagine how many scratches 6 months from now. Maybe I am wrong and this is just rare. But I don't think apple should ever have used Ion-X glass. Maybe it's because the sapphire maker couldn't deliver their promise.

I see someone wrote something with a similar problem. I've had a Sport Watch for a little over a week and noticed a big scratch right down the middle of the screen last night. If this is a sign of things to come, sorry that's not cool with me. I own a ton of watches, both expensive and inexpensive like Casios G Shock line, and haven't seen any scratches like that happen. It's got to be a soft material they are using because I haven't hit this thing on anything, all I've done is clean it off at night with the same rag I use to clean both my Mac screen and my iPad, and neither have scratches.

Long story short I like the idea of the watch and it's very usful to me and I'm going to exchange it for a stainless steel model because of the difference in screen/glass material. IMO both should have that type of hardened crystal like the Apple Watch does, but whatever, I guess you get what you pay for.

I got my SS watch on Opening Day. I turned it in on Sunday because of a defective coating on the screen. They are replacing it. I have been without my watch for too long...

So I've been using my Apple Watch Sport for over four months. And it is not damaged in any way. Not that I do a lot of 'rough' stuff, but I have smashed my Watch quite a lot times as I recall, especially to PCs since I do a lot of assembling and all (never take the watch off). In fact, sometimes I am so worried about the glass or body having any scratces. Then I look for those, and strangely enough I can't find anything damaged at all.

Apple Watch Sport is way more durable than I thought. It's not anything near what some others have been experiencing with the same or even tougher situations. All I know, is that I'm really happy with this as result. It's incredible! :D

Let's see...

I've had it now for 2.5 months and it's been through lots of workouts, daily wear, and a music festival. It's doing great.

Yesterday marked 3 months that I've had my space black. I've worn it for doing yard work, doing renovations and most recently doing deck demolition (it's mostly covered by the cuff of my work gloves, so it doesn't get scraped by nails or stones).
Rinse it under the tap at the end of the day (as Apple advises for cleaning of the crown) and it's good as new.
(I wear the sport band when doing anything that would constitute getting sweaty or dirty - really don't want to spend a lot of time cleaning my link bracelet) :)
Very happy with the watch. Looking forward to the changes with WatchOS 2.

Ive had my replacement SG sport for 1 week. At least 50% of the beveled area around the screen has raw aluminum showing. NO scratches or nicks. The coating is literally wearing off, unacceptable Applecare is looking to see what they can do. I requested a return or switch to SS model.

After about 2 months, my sapphire display got a huge scratch, and then the OLED layer broke a few days later and a quarter of the display became black.

Apple replaced it, but I'm not happy.

I don't recall any particular event that would have caused it, other than standard knocks on the door or whatever, that the sapphire display is supposed to be immune to. I also never dropped it.

My 38mm Space Grey Sport actually is getting a lot of scratches right near the top of the screen because I keep rubbing it up against my desk at work. Other than that it's great. Battery life is pretty terrible though on the watchOS2 beta. :(

There it is, my first visible damage on my Apple Watch. The only thing is, is that I have no idea where it came from. I don't really mind it that much though because I've had it for over 3 months and it is only really visible in direct sunlight. The screen's still fine!

I have some pretty good scratches on my SS but I wear them like a badge of honor. I plan to clean it once a quarter or so and buff out the scratches with a polishing cloth i got on amazon. I can't freak out every single time there is a scratch on it. It adds character :)

I have a SS that I got at launch. I've worn it pretty much every day doing things from yard work to refinishing furniture. The SS case has multiple small kicks, but nothing different than any other metal watch I have. The sapphire display is flawless and the sport band is fine. Overall very happy. Can't wait to try out Os2 when I get home tonight.

I buff out the scratches every two to three weeks with "Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish" and a dual sided microfiber cloth.

The scratches go completely away every time.

After 1 month of usage i feel that my digital crown feels more stiff when clicking and turning..... anyone to have a similar experience?

A mini review after about 3 months. Don't bother flaming me just because I have a view you don't like. It's unproductive

----

So Apple has to replace my watch after watch os 2 bricked it. I wish I hadn't put any protective stuff on it so I'd have a real idea of how it holds up. The brief time I didn't the oleo phobic coating definitely got a scratch. The aluminum case also got small scratches around the glass. And I'm bed ridden right now

I looked at a few others today roaming around waiting for Genius Bar...there were definitely some pretty ****ed sport watches. Some stainless that seemed fine.

Clearly the sport watch is not as durable as the standard edition. I do expect a lot more from something labeled sport.

So i am thinking I won't bother protecting it when I get the replacement - it lessened but didn't stop, scratching to use a skin on the screen and the hard cases are just ugly and reduce touch accuracy. . If or when it gets totally screwed up from wear and tear apparently generated while changing channels and washing my hands I will file a claim, and if that happens I won't be replacing it. Today sealed that in my mind. So much bs involved with owning this from apps not working, to weirdness with first part location services and activity monitoring.

After a few months it seems to me the sport device being so delicate is really just the beginning of what's wrong with is device, be it a glaring one.

I'd be shocked if they don't change materials by the next fen they really need to dump the scratch prone aluminum and get their glass process as tough as gorilla glass, which it isn't now.

Finally I got a scratch on the side, a very small and light one, from putting my hand in my pocket. Denim can scratch 7000series?

Anyone truly concerned with wear and tear needs to not even consider a sport model. Sapphire and the ability to polish.

Comparatively my plastic pebble didn't scratch in 2 years. I used klasse all in one to cost it. I can't believe a $79 watch is more durable and its not even marketed towards those who are athletic

I get my opinions are not going to be received well. I'm sorry if you took my views on apples device personally, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. . I want to paint s picture for those who haven't purchased. I really wouldn't consider it until second gen...perhaps to be more fair I would consider the minimum watch to buy the standard edition, which is priced ridiculously considering the crap bands that peel, fit poorly, and cause weird sweating.

I'm extremely disappointed after opening my accounts considering it relatively durable. It just isn't. I also was stoked on the functions...maybe those are still coming. Half my apps don't work right as it is. Especially if they use location service.

I'll post back here if in three months with no protection it's looking good, but I am positive it won't be fine, or even acceptable at that point.

It's a harsh view, but an informed one. Based on two watches one of which is barely exposed to anything but a splash. The Khmer of which is used in an office environment.

To anyone looking to buy pay close attention to the comments. Most of the truly happy people have the stainless version.

Sadly, I've had my first incident. I was at the gym and put my Space Gray Sport watch on top of my bag in my locker. Didn't think about it after getting out of the shower and grabbed the bag right out, letting the watch fall face down on the floor. Made a very small, but noticeable to me, chip in the bottom edge of the glass, and some scuffs on the watch itself. I have applecare+ but i don't think it is worth the $70 to replace just yet so I am trying to live with it.

How many times can you do this before you get down to bare metal ?
The entire watch is solid stainless steel, so.... forever?

EDIT - I see he said he uses aluminum polish - I was not aware you could polish anodized aluminum.

I'd say around the 3 month mark I got my first scuff/scratch on my sport screen. Funny thing was it was about a week or two after my screen protector came off. It was doing its job but I didn't put a new one on quick enough. It's just a scuff so it's barely noticeable. After putting the new screen protector on I can't even see the scuff.

As others have said, it's a wearable, so it's expected. I bang that thing against stuff all the time so I'm more surprised it's not worse than it is. Thank goodness for those cheap screen protectors.
