I feel bad for the 8 and 8 Plus owners

Lol pissed myself laughing at how ridiculous this post is. Surely you mean the ones you feel sorry for are the PLUS owners.

Even after 3 years, everytime I see one of these surfboards I giggle at how clumsy, ungainly and awkward it looks. And so so ugly. At least on the 7/8+ it’s waterproof so you can go surfing on it.

Now that the X is out, there is literally ZERO reason to buy a plus model. It’s the plus version that the X has made obsolete, not the 4.7” version. It literally makes no sense as a purchase when you can either get a 7/8 with a usable form factor for less money, or the latest and the greatest with the X for not really that much more money than the plus.

All of the plus’s considerable shortcomings (the 2014 design has aged far worse on the plus than the regular model) would be forgivable if it was cheap, but it’s not. The design is a complete embarrassment in 2017 - hell it was even back in 2014. Apple should have just released the 8 and the X, and dropped the embarrassment that is the 8 plus

I can unravel this argument with two words

Battery life

Simple as that. It has always been the advantage of the plus. And it's fairly obvious the X is the compact model to replace the 7 not the plus.

It’s the last of the old generation of iPhone’s. That’s sort of like buying the “Limited” production run of a car the last year before a major model upgrade. You get all the bells and whistles thrown in of the new model, but shoved into an old body style. Some people are perfectly fine with driving an older model with mismatched components. When you use the X you suddenly realize how Swiping is supposed to work per Apple’s vision, you suddenly realize the magic of Face ID, etc.

Defensive mode if ever there was one! lol In truth though, the 8 is a classic, but a classic that is practically indistinguishable at any reasonable distance from the iPhone 6, or 6S, or 7 that came before it.

It depends on whether fashion is a critical factor for the owner. For me, a 3 year old classic design does not suddenly inherit an 'avoid at all costs' vibe.

I've just upgraded from a 4S to an 8+ because I actually think bezels are useful when using a phone (each to his own I guess), and because I don't fear social rejection from not having the latest tech. I'm pretty sure I'll be hanging on to this until the iPhone XIV or later.

Anyone who feels sorry for 8/8+ owners will no doubt be feeling sorry for themselves when next year's iPhone comes out. For those people, Apple could use the tagline: 'iPhone X - so amazing you'll be desperate to get rid of it in 12 months', and they'd still be queueing up obediently.

Meanwhile, for my fellow Luddite 8/8+ owners, you can enjoy the full experience of watching films on the sassy new iPhone X on your own TV, with this simple adapter kit...

If an S8+ was a poor experience for you and the hardware was poor quality why would have you went out and purchased a Note 8? That makes no sense to me at all. I have an S8+ and it runs great. It hasn't slowed down at all and I get minor updates every 4-6 weeks that seem to only improve it.

On the Apple side I'd most likely only want an X because there is no way I'd go back to a 4 year old design. I'll still argue, however the X's design would be a step backwards next to my S8+.

I had very similar concerns. The thing is, the iPhone 8 Plus is a perfected phone. It's the result of three-four years of trial and error. It feels super polished to me. I can't say that of my 7 Plus.

Being an Apple fangirl (sort of), I did contemplate getting the iPhone X, given that I do enjoy OLED screens. But other than the OLED screen and a new body, there's little it has going for someone like me who values solid design over the latest and greatest for the mere sake of it. I don't need to brag and show off that I can afford something. I did not buy the iPhone 8 Plus to serve as a status symbol. I bought it to be my daily driver, my extended hand. The iPhone 8 Plus excels in being just that. To top it off, it sports a now "classic" design that I see as iconic. I love the look and feel of this "outdated" device, love the thick bezels (OMG, right?) to rest my thumbs on while using it in landscape mode.

If I want something that has useful features that my 8 Plus doesn't have, e.g. a pen and other nifty productivity stuff, then it certainly isn't the X at this time, I'd be looking at the Note 8 or other phones by various manufacturers.

The X and 8 Plus are extremely similar in features, too similar to even be worth noting the differences. The biggest difference is that the 8 Plus doesn't have the "wow" factor. It isn't new, it isn't exciting, and it isn't the latest. For people who need just that, yeah, I can see how the iPhone 8 Plus seems like a horrible choice at a similar cost.

I originally planned on buying an 8 and let the X users beta test the phone but that was more trying to convincing myself that I didn't want the X. I just played with one in stores and it is unequivocally the best iPhone Apple has ever made. The feel is extremely premium and the screen is so good that it looks fake, as if the icons are stickers on the screen.

Then I planned on buying a used 7 to hold me over for the XS but the iPhone X doesn't feel like a beta product, it feels like a flagship product.

I am seeing some teething problems with the new iPhone X. And this is one of the biggest reasons why I am staying with the iPhone 8 Plus. Along with the fact that next year hopefully, Apple will come out with a larger version and have the Face ID issues that have been reported on this forum fixed. Next year‘s iPhone larger size will have, like the iPhone 8 compared to the iPhone 8+ a better screen as well (750p compared to 1080p / lower PPI compared to a higher PPI)

It is really good at random times but really bad at other random times you wouldn’t expect either

I would have preferred a Touch ID embedded display assuming that were possible

Gen2 Touch ID is a more mature biometric

That's definitely is a nice feature to have.

The phone you carry is absolutely a status symbol and a clue to the people around you about who “you” are the same as the clothes you wear, car you drive, etc. Intentional or not people are always making immediate impressions of the people and things around them (it’s an inherited survival trait). Whether or not you care what your phone is saying about you is totally up to you and most people, to use your example, would never be vain enough to TALK about their phone as a status symbol.

Bottom line, whether you care or not, it’s a status symbol.

That may hold true if I were a shallow individual that based my opinion of others solely on what they wear, carry, drive, and how they look, instead of WHO they are as an individual.....but I’m not. My survival is not based on whether I feel I have the better phone than you and that I drive the better car. My existence is this earth and living in it is not determined by how much I make, or what I wear to make it LOOK like I make more by buying name brands. Most of the name brands you purchase to look the part are made in some sweatshop for pennies, and you are over paying your hefty price based on the marketing on a brand. You need to find more depth to yourself.

I work for a multi billionaire. He’s an older guy and a great man. He is charitable, runs foundations, and does a lot of good in his life. He has an iPhone 6 and walks around in Jeans and a sweatshirt. You would never realize who this man is and how much he was worth by his initial appearance. Does that mean his status puts him at the bottom of the food chain because he doesn’t look the part?

I feel sorry for you that you are robbing yourself of incredible experiences and relationships in life if that’s the only initial impression you can observe about someone.

One less gig of RAM
No Telephoto
Worst battery life among the flagship group while having smallest display/lowest resolution/ppi between Plus and X

Still only has a 1800-1900 mAh battery trying to power 750p!

The iPhone 7 and 8 owners having a $700 HD smartphone were the ones who got jipped. This is why I got the 5" Pixel over XL. Google didn't compromise it as much. Same battery life, camera, and amount of RAM. Had 1080p.

All the X did was kill the 4.7" iPhones models. Absolutely ZERO advantages over the Plus models and X being similar sized while retaining all the Plus features is the final nail in their coffin.

Check the battery life below. Only 4.7" and 326ppi. The 4.7" consistently score the worst among iPhones. The iPhone 7 also has the highest SAR for an iPhone. No point buying a 4.7" iPhone. The X killed it.

I love my 4.7” 8. Rather have a wider screen than a taller screen, as is present with the X.

And the 4.7” isn’t irrelevant. Not everyone has the hands of a giant. Battery life for me on my 8 is fantastic, easily get 2 days out of it.

I wouldn’t feel bad for anyone because it was their choice to go with the 8. Now of course some 8 owners deep down inside are probably having some buyers remorse knowing that they are carrying around an old design that’s a second class phone to the X.

Everyone buys things for different reasons and many owners might have valid reasons for picking the 8. With that said, I feel if you want to save money get the 7 because if you spend the amount they want for the 8 you might as well get the X. If you can afford $800 for a phone you can afford $1000 for it.

iPhone 8 being sandwiched between the more affordable, but look alike 7 and the all new X puts it in a rough spot when it comes to marketing.

When did all the iPhone snobbery start? ‘Second-class phone’? Please. So we’ve regressed to ‘my slab of metal is better than your slab of metal’. 🙄

I’ve got an 8, came from a 6S - by your logic, I’ve been a ‘second-class citizen’ for the last year.

Personally, I always root for the underdog. 🙄

Now, before you say, I could afford the X, but don’t want to be a beta tester for the new design and FaceID. Can also think of a thousand better things to spend a grand on. 😉

I'm happy with my choice of the 8+, it's still a hefty upgrade compared to my old 6 Plus. I will admit I did not think I even had a remote shot of getting the X for months if I pre-ordered - or even be able to walk in at a few locations yesterday, (2 nearby Apple stores had them as late as 1pm). I was dead wrong about that and supply from all the news in the past 5, 6 weeks.

YES I briefly looked up how to trade in 8+ for the X yesterday morning...and seeing a phone thats 4 weeks old and the money I'd lose from that, and then getting the X, Now I'm looking at paying a LOT more for the already expensive X. It would have been one of those spontaneous purchases that I am notorious for - never think about $$, I'll just buy it. Glad I had strong willpower this time not to give in.

BUT the way I see it...when I really think about it in depth, 8+..yeah the design is the pretty much the same going back to 2014. I STILL like the feel of this phone. I know I'm beating a dead horse about the X design (YES that notch..i cant get over that) If I didn't like it at first...still bothered with all the "Hands on, Unboxing" videos this past week, then I am not going to like it when I get it - maybe I'd get over it...or maybe I won't. Who knows. I know it doesn't bother others..that's fine.

Simply put, it doesn't make sense to drop $1000+ JUST to have the brand new design, a design that I was never in love with to begin with. I'll see what Apple has up it's sleeve in 2018.

it does look significantly better if your settings are set to the same thing. Its not close. My friend has an 8+ phone and we compared the two. It takes much less in the way of brightness for the X to match up with the 8+.

So I decided I’m taking back the iPhone 8 that I purchased this week. I would really like the battery life that the X offers. But I’m also not buying the iPhone X just yet... I want to wait another week or two and see if any big problems pop up.
