I feel bad for the 8 and 8 Plus owners

This thread made me laugh 😀 As a person who already had bezel-less, super amoled screen phone (Galaxy S8) i simply can't be so excited about X as many of it's new users 🙂 Sure it looks superb and works just fine (tried it today at the store), but for 1179 eur - not worth it. I will wait for ~3 months or something and then i will buy it brand new from the local classifieds site for 750 eur (usual practice for me). And then i will be happy with the deal 🙂

Well, I’ve got the S8+ and I’m actually pretty happy to have a bezel-less (even if there IS a notch) phone the size of my iPhone 5 that doesn’t stick a few inches out of my pocket. And that hasn’t already lost 25% of its speed after only a few months of ownership thanks to the vagaries of Android OS.

I bought both the 8 Plus and the X.

After 1.5 months with the 8 Plus, the last 3 hours with the X have been hard. The total screen area on the X is smaller than the 8 Plus and it's painfully obvious. The screen isn't as wide and it lacks the iPad keyboard layout.

I plan on returning the X this weekend. I enjoy a device that has the largest screen possible. Sure the X has 5 or 6 features the 8 Plus doesn't have but my #1 feature is screen size and the X isn't the winner in my book as a result.

I love my 8+. If I had wanted an X, I would have purchased an X. Don't feel bad for me, (or do, I really don't care). I bought the device that suited my needs the best. Next year's iPhone will be the best iPhone ever made, and so on and so forth. Working in technology for 2+ decades you know there's always something better around the corner, so you buy what fits your needs in the now. The 8+ was that phone for me.

Enjoy your X, but please spare us the "I feel bad for the 8 owners" drivel.

Ive always been an early adopter and enjoy doing so.

I get a new iPhone every year so not worried about the next one coming out but I fully considered getting the 8+ but as for getting both that is just a waste of money for me as I only need one phone 😉 The only time I really thought my new phone purchase was a waste was getting the 7+ from the 6+.

Coming from the 7+ I was a bit concerned about the screen size but tbh, I cant really tell a difference in normal use.

In no way would I ever create a thread like this about anything. What a jumped up twit.

I'm super-curious about battery life on the X. Going from a 6 to a 7+ was HUGE for me (solely in terms of battery). My wife wanted the X partly (mostly) because the battery in her 6s is crap -- even after apple replaced it under the recall.

After our experience this morning where the phone wouldn't swipe up at all, I'm kind of glad she decided against the X. It would be horrible to get it and have marginally better battery life than her 6s did when it was good.

Wondering what you heard about the screen? While we had hers I noticed it was a bit yellow... well, sort of a lot yellow. I would have tolerated it as I've done with my yellow phones in the past, but it was a bit underwhelming.

I've heard some of the screens are very yellow, and even looking at the "perfect" display models at the store, I noticed that the screen looks discolored if you view it from any angle other than straight on. It's a minor thing, but noticeable. Also, it just didn't "pop" or look as incredible as I expected. Not sure if it's just the different arrangement of pixels or what, but the screen wasn't nearly as vibrant and bright as I expected after hearing everyone rave about OLEDs.

As for battery life, Apple has official specs that say it gets a couple hours less than the Plus on certain activities, but I'll be very curious to see how that works out in real-world usage.

Not got mine (next week) but seriously considering cancelling and picking up the 8+. Starting to think those moving from normal sized iPhones will be happy with the screen but those from a plus may feel differently.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't actually looked at Apple's battery stats on the X (compared to anything else even) just because those numbers seem to be somewhat far away from real-world but now that you mention the comparison, it does serve as somewhat of a baseline for comparison. If it is a tad less than the X, I could swing it. If it's a decent amount worse, I'll have to wait for whatever the "plus" model is next year.

Seriously though, I'm really wondering how much it would be a regression from a plus model. When the 6 plus came out, I was a bit skeptical. When the 6s Plus came out it was growing on me and by the 7 plus, I wanted to try it. Now I'm a full "plus convert". Having not used a case since the 4s, my plus is as big as a non-plus with a case but bigger screen and better battery life...AND a better camera to boot! I don't know that I'd be able to go back to a lesser camera or battery -- not that the camera will ever go backwards, but it's a highlight to me. I think I could manage a slightly (SLIGHTLY) smaller screen but I do like how it operates differently (landscape mode, etc).

To be fair you’ve still got to use your finger regardless of how you unlock and interact with your phone. FaceID is just a different method currently with TouchID still very much used in 2017.

The 8 series is just a poor mans X. Essentially they have a lot of the same items. I purchased an 8+ and it’s amazing. Best battery life I’ve ever seen from Apple and the screen is a massive improvement. I don’t feel sorry in the slightest for purchasing it to use as my daily driver. I only got an X for testing purposes and I didn’t even preorder it because again.. 8+ fits my needs to a T. To each is own I guess.

Poor man's X that's funny, especially considering all the people who had to come up with creative ways in order to afford to buy the X because it's so ridiculously expensive.

My screen doesn't turn blue-green-cyan when viewed off axis. I also don't need to every worry about screen burn in like the poor X users...
(Which is likely to happen as I commute and have Waze running 24/7 to keep a lookout for the "man")

My movies/games also look bigger and we don't have to wait a year before our apps are optimized for the screen size and FaceId

Having to pick your phone up and look at it at the correct angle when you could previously have your phone unlocked before it even gets out of your pocket is "progress" to you? Same with your phone sitting on a table?

Not being able to view a simple battery percentage is "progress" to you?

Changing things for the sake of changing things is not progress. Changing things in a way that makes them better is progress.

I don’t feel bad at all. This phone is an extra $300. It’s about 40% more expensive. Not everyone needs or wants or can afford a flagship. If $1000 is the new norm, I feel bad for all future buyers.

I bought one with some internal reservations, and an hopefully happy with it. It’s absokutely a want versus need though. $80 for a new battery in my 6s plus would have had me going at least another year, possibly two.

I originally planned on buying an 8 and let the X users beta test the phone but that was more trying to convincing myself that I didn't want the X. I just played with one in stores and it is unequivocally the best iPhone Apple has ever made. The feel is extremely premium and the screen is so good that it looks fake, as if the icons are stickers on the screen.

Then I planned on buying a used 7 to hold me over for the XS but the iPhone X doesn't feel like a beta product, it feels like a flagship product.

I’m glad that people are happy with their Xs, but I’m quite happy with my 8 Plus.
No need to feel sorry for me. I chose the phone I wanted.

It's approximately $200 from 8 Plus to X or $300 from 8 to X with the highest storage. If the 8/8 Plus people really wanted the X, I'd wait and save up the difference, but some people don't really care for all the bells and whistles.

I wouldn’t feel bad for anyone because it was their choice to go with the 8. Now of course some 8 owners deep down inside are probably having some buyers remorse knowing that they are carrying around an old design that’s a second class phone to the X.

Everyone buys things for different reasons and many owners might have valid reasons for picking the 8. With that said, I feel if you want to save money get the 7 because if you spend the amount they want for the 8 you might as well get the X. If you can afford $800 for a phone you can afford $1000 for it.

iPhone 8 being sandwiched between the more affordable, but look alike 7 and the all new X puts it in a rough spot when it comes to marketing.

I wouldn't feel bad as they made their decision and I am sure are relatively happy about it. I do think at some level they were probably hoping the X wasn't any good though. From everything I've read, they were very wrong. The X is easily the best out there.

We’re all in the ecosystem, we all have preferences. The problem with the anonymity of the internet is too many people expose their true selves, and it is pretty sad the amount of arrogance out there based on superficial reasons.

The 8 Plus is a great phone. The X is the same phone with a different skin. Same internals, I just can’t take portrait shots with my front camera and make funny faces on an emoji. Trust me, I’m not suffering.

I just got my X this afternoon and am loving it (I am moving from a 5s) No negatives so far, Face ID is working fantastically, and I have no issues with the colour, and so on. But I can understand why some are happy staying with the form factor and UI they are comfortable with.

I do honestly feel that the 8 series will be a sales failure when compared to the 7 or the X IMHO. If you can’t afford the best you’ll go with a 7 and if you have the money (or decide to extend yourself) you’re going to want the best and latest. It’s hard paying almost as much for something that looks 4 years old when a little more will get you the latest.

I can totally understand a 7 or X purchase. Buying an 8 sort of makes me scratch my head, but I guess if someone really wants an 8 then more power to them. They might have buyers remorse in a few months though and wish they had spent all that money on something all new, but it’s their choice.
