I have a mbp from right before the switch to unibody. Its the most pwerful unit they made before uni (2.5, 512mb vram, 4 gb ram) The machine is exactly what I need and I'll keep it until about january of 2011, by then I think we will be seeing some pretty amazing performance from apple laptops and I will see a significant upgrade :D

I wish they would have updated before the holidays. I dont understand why they would do it in January. Everyone is buying in December.

Not me! I've learned. :D Days are gone now, but you used to have to wait until at least after MacWorld...

But some of us need the cash we may be receiving at XMas in order to afford said computer. I've got around 850 stashed away, need another 550 or so...

January would be perfect, but I planned on waiting until the next update whenever it comes.

Either way, I dont think it matters for the 13 inch. I think it will a performance boost but thats it. I dont think the air will change at all either. Maybe the 17 inch will get i7s and the 15 i5. But I think thats all we'll see.
MBP i3 13 inch
MBP i5 15 inch
MBP i7 17 inch

:p

MacBook Pro, anyone? This is shocking news. I really didn't see this one coming at all. It's just so unpredictable and out of the blue. I really would like to check the source of this, this seems even beyond a rumor, this seems flatout made-up.
[/sarcasm]

Perhaps you should spend some times visiting sites that are not just about Macs. These processors have been known for over a year. I suggest also read about PC news.

Perhaps you should increase the gain on your sarcasm meter; it appears as if you missed some in the post you were quoting. MR has had an "I'm waiting for Arrandale" thread running since mid-March with around 1500 posts...

It looks like the iMac quad core shipping date is the only thing that changed

just noticed this 3 days ago as well...as soon as i can figure out my configuration i'm ready to finally get a better desktop mac than this mini i have been running/upgrading for 2 years...ha

agree - but i only know because i pay attention to sites like this.

oh well, back to enjoying my apparently aging mac...

With incremental steps in C2D etc. no it's not a big deal, but this is genuinely a big leap forward - brand new tech.

They said the same thing about the jump from the Pentium 4 to the Core architecture, and the same about the jump from the P3 to the P4, but really unless you need absurd amounts of CPU performance, the average user won't notice much if anything.

Cinebench results for iMac Core i7 versus others

We ran Cinebench 10 on the 2.8GHz Core i7 iMac. We got a multi-core score of 15290. That's very close to what we got on a 4-core Nehalem Mac Pro 2.93GHz (15521) and much faster than what we got on the newest 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo iMac (6511). For obvious reasons, all those results pale in comparison to the 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro 2.93HGz which got a rating of 25878.

Have any of you run Cinebench on a 2.66GHz Core i5 iMac? If so, please post it here.

Intel will eventually come out with a better integrated graphics chipset, but it's not their focus. Apple will never completely ditch discrete graphics card. What exactly do you do on your mac that requires such graphics horsepower? Integrated may suit you anyhow.
Intel Integrated is SLOWER THEN to days 9400m chip.

It's the new mac mini with with HALF as FAST video.

Also there is the price to look at $1200 for intel video in a desktop? even a $800 mini with that will be bad.

$1,499.00 and $1,699.00 laptops with that will be a joke.

One thing that does potentially suck is that all of the 32nm options that Intel is pushing for mobile application have mandatory integrated graphics. It is on the module (with half on a normal chipset as well), so it is far less likely that future Apple machines will have decent, discrete GPUs with a little oomph.

with the mini with that carp they are just asking for people to build osx86 systems. same thing with $1200+ laptops?

Are there any tables that show performance comparisons between the mobile Nehalem and their desktop variants?

Currently I'm set to receive a Dell desktop with the i7-920. But if the performance gains seen in the desktop Nehalems do not outpace the mobiles by an extreme margin, I'll have a much stronger case for getting a Macbook Pro come 2010.

I work primarily with After Effects, Maya and Photoshop.

Sorry, it just seemed consistent with some of the typical comments of those here who know nothing about the inside of their computers, who all they know is that they have to get the latest Mac because it's new. You have to admit, a lot of people here are just completely ignorant about certain common knowledge things related to computer. Which is fine for regular people, but not people who visit computer related forums.

True, I'd rather see an even improvement in both CPU and GPU rather than the 100% focus on CPU we get from Apple while the GPU is pathetic.

New Macbook and Macbook Pros!!!

there will be in lots of shortage in inventory being a mainstream CPUs, may be march upgrade for MB and MBP.

But this just missed holiday season and knowing new technology coming jan 2010, not a lot of purchase for holidays whether PC or MAC.

other than the iMac of course

Between low power processors and SSDs, it shouldn't be long before computers like the MBA and smaller can offer very respectable performance.

umm, the current MBA with SSD already offers very respectable performance, do you even have one or are you just saying by making an assumption about its size>

This site is funny. Why so defensive? It's like someone just made fun of your parents or something. Passionate about Macs.
