Right? The one big thing “ready” at release and not only does it not work but it’s actually harmful. There aren’t even that many new features in iOS 15… seriously guys?!
Yeah, I have permanent backups of all albums in original format, plus I do monthly backups of “important” albums like the kiddo, family, etc. They’re saved in 3 digital locations plus the big ones have physical copies in a safe deposit box in disc and flash format (like wedding, honeymoon, etc).Though to be fair, this is not just "photos disappearing". This is a very specific situation of a photo sent by someone else that was deleted when you delete the conversation. Yes, it is a bug, but does not impact the overall reliability of iCloud photos which has been solid for several years now. I never lost photos from it.
I do hope that you are doing backups because the most common cause of losing photos is a computer dying or being stolen or human error(oops, I meant to delete those other photos). It is a good idea to have a local time machine backup to an external hard drive. I would also recommend an offsite backup using a service like Backblaze that backs up to the cloud and can be restored even if you lose your whole house.
I have not found a photo system that solves all of my needs to be convenient to snap and store pictures, simple to browse and organize. basic editing and also sharing. They all do somethings well and miss on other things. Apple Photos does well as a starting point as it is well integrated and a good place to store the photos. The newer versions do allow you to use other apps for more advanced photo editing. Photos does fall down in I also have google photos setup on my phone and use the free plan to upload all my photos as they are taken. They are not full resolution that way but you don't lose a lot and it is a good extra backup option. It is also fairly easy to share from Google photos. I'm not sure if it lets you setup albums and control access. not something I have need for.
Yes, Apple Photos does not handle family sharing like this in an acceptable fashion. I'm not aware of any other photo management system that does it really well either. They mostly focus on a single photo store for a single user who occasionally shares some pics.Yeah, I have permanent backups of all albums in original format, plus I do monthly backups of “important” albums like the kiddo, family, etc. They’re saved in 3 digital locations plus the big ones have physical copies in a safe deposit box in disc and flash format (like wedding, honeymoon, etc).
But my biggest gripe is the “can you send me that picture you took earlier” comment from my wife every dang day, and I get her frustration because I share it. There isn’t a great way to give her full resolution copies of photos automatically other than messages/airdrop.
This is exactly why I never buy release day iStuff. Some think of it as impulse control. It’s actually more self preservation.
Apple has been a disaster lately in so many ways. I have Apple One and family sharing. It works for my kids but not for my wife. When she tries to access Apple Music from her phone (which shows Apple Music has been shared with her) she gets the option to subscribe and pay for her own membership but no way to access it through family sharing. Wasted 2 hours with Apple Support and they can't figure out what is wrong.
The argument was that reduction of software quality is related to people working from homes. Yet we didn’t see that on iOS 14. Looking at iOS 13, that means WFH has nothing to do with software quality as it was bad even when the team was working on campus. Not to mention, Catalina on macOS was a MASSIVE issue for me - kernel panics that Apple confirmed was OS related and I have never experienced a kernel panic on a mac before. When did that release again? iOS 13 was also a massive issue for me. When did that come out again?
I want to see that privacy guy that implied “don’t do illegal things” to go first. Tim has made errors in hirings before in the past, and I hope he rectify things.I think it’s the CSAM scan tool, it’s got iOS 15 all messed up! Great legacy Tim, way to foul things up, when are you leaving?
Well, looking at the state of iOS 15, maybe that mass scanning system is really good, that the team ignored iOS 15 completely…And this is the company that wants to scan our phone and photos with the promise that everything will be just fine.
I’ve been saying this since 2013.. apple software is in free fall and I blame him for it.We all love Craig Federighi but apart from his charisma, does he actually foster a culture where details matter? Apparently not. Apple’s software quality has never been great but it’s getting to the point of being ridiculous.
Work from home has nothing to do with it whatsoeverWork from home.
We disagree.Work from home has nothing to do with it whatsoever
All my photos and video backup to OneDrive, been doing that for almost 10yrs now.And this is why I’m looking hard for better photo storage solutions. I appreciate the serious integration apple has with their ecosystem but I do not trust it to save my photos, and then it’s painful for sharing with family members. I have only 6000 photos, and I know I’m not even close to a power user! Just a new dad with lots of family pics that are very important to me.
Actually it does. The ‘product’ is not just the hardware. It’s the hardware and software combined. I never load a major iOS release either for the same reason. This bug has nothing to do with a new product.
Any software release, or even any change to icloud backend without a software release, can just as easily cause a bug, whether it is “new” or not. In fact, we’ve several examples of that this week alone.Actually it does. The ‘product’ is not just the hardware. It’s the hardware and software combined. I never load a major iOS release either for the same reason.
