Such a bad bad thought here.

The best smartphone design has rounded corners and the display fills all of the front. Your idea that it loses pixels is nonsensical. It actually loses pixels by not going into curved corners. And if you don’t use curved corners then you have an INSANELY uncomfortable device with sharp corners that dig into your hand.

Terrible idea on your behalf.

Moreover, the devices should have rounded edges like the iPhone X which was the epitome of smartphone design in both beauty and ergonomics.

A human hand is ergonomically rounded. It’s why intelligent humans made door knobs rounded, a steering wheel rounded, a broom handle rounded, and anything else you can think of.
Slightly baffled by these comments. I’ve never met one person in conversation that doesn’t think the current design with straight edges (harking all the way back to the iconic iPhone 4), isn’t both I) the most classic/timeless/beautiful design and ii) by far the most ergonomic! The curved edges of say the 8 or 11 looked cheap and ‘Samsung-like’ as well as being like a bar of soap… impossible to hold onto! Having flat/squared off edges doesn’t ‘dig into your hand’, it allows u to actually grip it!

The iPhone 15 Pro models will have thinner, curved bezels compared to the iPhone 14 Pro models, potentially resulting in an Apple Watch-like appearance, according to the leaker known as "ShrimpApplePro."

ShrimpApplePro clarified that the next-generation "Pro" iPhone models will still have flat displays, since only the bezels are to be curved. According to a source speaking to the leaker, this combination of slimmer bezels and curved edges could result in a look similar to the Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8.

The curved front glass will purportedly also be present on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus's design, but these devices will not have thinner bezels compared to their iPhone 14 predecessors. ShrimpApplePro added that the iPhone 15 lineup will feature the same display sizes as last year's iPhone 14 lineup.

Last year, the leaker was among the first to say that the iPhone 15 Pro models will have a titanium frame with curved rear edges. ShrimpApplePro has developed a good track record for revealing accurate information about Apple's plans, so their claims are worth taking seriously.

This annoys me. Surely Apple's well resourced and world class ergonomic design people(*) have a view on what is optimal for ergonomics in terms of comfort and security (likelihood of the phone slipping out of someone's hand) in terms of square vs curved. If yes then as a consumer I want to benefit from Apple's in-house expertise and be offered a phone that has what Apple considers to be the most ergonomic design. If Apple is going to keep flip-flopping between flat and curved designs isn't that an admission that for certain model years it is offering something that it considers sub-optimal in terms of ergonomics just to have something new to talk about?

(*) As one of the biggest companies in the world making one of the most famous and iconic handheld devices where ergonomics is a key factor I would expect Apple to attract really good people to a very well-resourced department that is able to do lots of research and testing so if anyone has a good handle on what makes for optimal ergonomics for a phone I would hope that it would be Apple (alongside its other big competitors)

Edgy:
- iPhone 4/4s
- iPhone 5/5s
- iPhone SE

Curvy:
- iPhone X
- iPhone XS
- iPhone 11

Edgy:
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 14

Curvy again:
- iPhone 15…

So Apple would just switch it up every few years to make the design look outdated? Makes sense… for a fashion accessory… 😎

The Pro is a non starter for me as the aesthetics of the camera system I find repulsive, and the design of the phone is very important to me

15 / 15 plus will get usb-c, pill island, same form factor.

15 pro / pro max will get the above, periscope lens, and new color.

No curved bezels, no touch id, no "ultra", and no haptic buttons.

Source: I made it up in my head, but am pretty sure this is the most likely scenario.

Why even bother. 99% of people slap a protector on there. For all I care a phone shouldn’t even have a back panel, let alone curved edges.

I genuinely wish the back and sides of phones were plastic like an old Lumia phone I still have was.
You could just pop the back/sides off and change to a different colour
And also that's where the Sim and Battery was also, so simple to pop in a new battery.
Such a shame we have made these devices so horrid to work on for the sake of fashion, esp when, as you say once in a case, who cares anyway. :(

The curved corners are still horrible. A display should always be rectangular, because most content is rectangular. A curved corner throws away pixels. That strange idea came many years ago, when some smartphone makers were proud that they can built displays that are not rectangular. The result are rounded corners, nodges, circular holes and "dynamic islands". Is it too much to ask that every row of a display has the same number of pixels?
Won't they think of the precious, lost pixels! 🥲

However...

The iPhoneX's smooth rounded shape is more slippery in the hand than the iPhone 14 so you can securely hold the latter with a lighter grip.

What I wish they would redesign is how the camera bump blends into the phone itself. I like how both the S21 and Pixel7 integrate the bumps into the phone design.

iPhone X = smooth back glass which is far more grippy than the matte glass.

And the rounded edges are far more comfortable so in this case ergonomics is better than the negligibly better grip of the square edges that cut into a user’s hands.

I never used an iPhone without a case until the iPhone X launched. I used my iPhone X for 4 years without a case and never broke it, and only dropped it a few times. I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro and now iPhone 14 Pro simply because my iPhone X battery was down to 77% and the screen had burn-in.

I did not want square edges or matte back glass which was why I waited so long, but eventually you have to upgrade because the devices simply age and Apple doesn’t make major design changes for years so you can’t usually wait out their idiocies.

You know something that’s hilarious to me about the iPhones before they went back to square edges? There were some people and tech reviewers who said ‘I love it because you can sit the phone up on it’s side to take pictures’. Imagine how stupid you’d have to be to do that, and how literally 99.99% of iPhone users have never done that. Moreover, those people who said that themselves, also never did it more than a couple times because it’s just a terrible terrible idea.

Unless you balance your phone's back on your fingertips, the sides are what dictate how slippery the iPhone feels. The back of the phone rarely touches the palm of my hand.

As you just said, the flat sides provide a better grip, and you don't have to grip the flat sides as tightly which improves ergonomics.
