I'm sorry, but this report is absolutely delusional. Can you imagine using Apple Pay without TouchID? To confirm your purchase you need to lean over the camera on the phone? That will be fun in the drive thru. Think about the Apple way - does that make anything about the user experience better? Analysts have to fill space, but for crying out loud, THINK!!

replacing touchID? No. In addition? Maybe.
(possibly a stupid question: how would it work in extremely low light conditions/darkness ?)
It would use the screen to lighten your face like it does now when you take a selfie
[doublepost=1487295676][/doublepost]Personally I don't like this at all I don't see how you have to bring the phone to your face each time you have to use apple pay or any action that needs authentication

Never gonna happen.

It won't work well lying in bed in the dark, unless they are planning to add an IR front facing LED. Moreover, it's simply not secure if you're in possession of a photo of the person who owns the phone (don't forget, a 3d camera is also capable of photographing a person in 3D, so as 3D printers become mainstream, this really won't be secure in the slightest. More generally, high-res photos of a person's finger prints are always going to be far less available).

It also won't work well for those in the matrix. I mean, did you choose the red or the blue pill? Or perhaps you went for the purple option... ;)

Apple are not this stupid. The finger print sensor isn't going away soon. It's perfectly good enough until will end up having to accept implanted DNA sensing BT modules, later extending into nano-technology biometric solutions (not as far off as many would imagine).

So long TouchID. *waves bye bye*

This will mean we will have squares round our faces... I don't see a problem with that.

$10 to $15 is not that much either... over a massive amount of phones, ya that would be big, but Apple can afford it... If they can afford paying less tax, they can afford anything

I love it how people start bashing Apple simply because of a rumor. This site is just too much sometimes.

It's a rumor site - not the nightly news.

It would be so nice if I could get my macrumors fix without the side of political BS. I'm starting to hate the internet.

The last time the US was this politicized was 1860. Just gonna have to deal with it.

Can "Facial Recognition" scan faces in dark???!!! Somebody tell me!

Yes, I do it all the time on my SP4, Infrared does not need visible light. IF Iphone X gets facial recognition on par with my SP4 you will forget about fingerprint tech. Once you do Facial Hello everything else is much worse. IRIS Hello is awesome too but a but not as good as facial login. They both are great .

I doubt you will have squares around your faces unless you use the camera itself after you login, Facial/Iris login should be completely seamless.

I know these questions won't apply to most users who don't plan to hold on to their phones for more than a year or two, but how does facial recognition allow for natural or more sudden changes in facial features? Can the phone's 3D scanner technology be reset in some way to remember new or different features of the user's/owner's face, or is the facial recognition based on broader profiles of the user's/owner's face?

No doubt this information will become clearer with more details about the technology, (if Apple are planning to adopt it in the new phones), as it is of course too obvious a consideration to be overlooked.

You can retrain it anytime...turn it off anytime.

If Apple takes away Touch ID, they're stupid. There's no other way to say it. They're stupid if they do.

They took away magsafe , so don't put it past them to do so.

Why would it go away if Touch ID just got introduced to Mac. Makes no sense, Touch ID is so convenient.

Some of the rumours (like this one) won't even be around in 5 years time. Y'all know damn well the screen will be a little bit bigger and the camera will be a little bit better and that's it. $1000 please. Oh, and if you want wireless charging that'll be $1200.

I hope that Apple releases the API right away upon launch so that we developers can start playing with it immediately. I really hate it when Apple releases a cool new feature but takes a year or two before opening it up to app developers.

I always use passcode.
Fingers and eye recognition can be forced by a court but typing a password is under the 5th.

What if the friendly interrogator has a very convincing $5 wrench?
