I won't be surprised at a model that costs this much.

I will be very surprised if they don't have $650-$750 model available still. (In addition to the $399 model).

The extra money they make will be outweighed by the people not buying at all (or upgrading every 3-4 years).

Other manufacturers come out with new innovative features every year, and keep the price the same. Apple repackages the same features and raises the price.

How does Apple do it?

Hopefully not. Conceptually, it sounds very good... but then you have to think it through. Do you really want to trust "strangers" as caretakers of up to all of your data? Do you want to trust the likes of AT&T, Verizon, etc, to be reasonable middlemen between you and your data? Do you trust that at such a time, an Apple would reduce the price because they are leaving out the traditional storage hardware or just enjoy the cost savings as additional profit? Do you want to believe that the "free" storage you enjoy now will be improved by some level of renting distant storage?

We tend to revolve around the wonders for us consumers in "trusting the cloud" by often referring to it as "the future." But all we're really doing is taking something that we have traditionally & entirely controlled and allowing for-profit businesses- some of which are practically detested and often tagged "greedy"- to inject themselves between us and our data/media/etc. And what's that get us? Thinner (is that something any of us genuinely want anymore)? iPhone price cuts (because Apple has a recent history of ejecting hardware out of their products and reducing:rolleyes: their prices? What exactly do we consumers get?
Yep!
4th Amendment said:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Doesn't apply when you sign it away in a 438 page contract that is printed on your screen in a 128 character wide window.

How does Apple do it?

Because it's not innovation that matters in a vacuum, but meaningful innovation.

Take a look at the Samsung S8. Fingerprint sensor in an awkward position. Face recognition which can be fooled by a photo. Gimmicky features such as Dex which likely won't see much uptake.

The technology behind them might be impressive, but what's the point, if they don't result in a meaningful experience for the end user?

Conversely, Apple continues with the trend of numerous incremental updates every year. Touch ID paired with secure enclave. Responsive touchscreen and silky-smooth scrolling. Timely software updates. Great customer service. Hardware features integrated at the OS level.

Their customers appreciate these updates, and more importantly, are willing to pay for them.

At this juncture, given Apple's success, I am surprised so many people remain intent on trying to explain away Apple's fortunes instead of explaining them.

Over 300 comments on a capacity rumour. OK, I get it.

Manufacturers? What features? Give me examples.

With upload directly to cloud storage when 5glte becomes norms
[doublepost=1494628645][/doublepost]
Well when 5g lte becomes the norm I believe there will be no use for onboard storage , JMOO ! 25 years as a engineer !

Aside from the fact that that's years away, what makes you think the telcos will make data cheap enough?

And in a few years, video and picture files will be that much larger and local storage will be that much cheaper.

And again, why pay for online storage. There is zero benefit, plenty of negatives and you want to pay a monthly fee for it?

What happens when the cloud service is down?

What about when you're away from cellular service? So anyone who likes to go on a cruise more than once every few years shouldn't buy an iPhone in your opinion?
[doublepost=1494636721][/doublepost]
Since most people finance phones anyways the prices wouldn't even be that much drastically higher.

*shakes head*

Totall Agree. With the current exchange rate ($1==£1) that apple seems to use and VAT(20%).... £1400+ for a frigging phone?
You got that wrong. Apple uses the correct exchange rate and adds VAT, as they should. Usually UK prices are set when new models arrive in the store. And right now the exchange rate seems to be not quite as miserable as one or two months ago, so the numbers in the UK might actually be lower than in the USA.

Yep. That A10 is really just an A4 in a different package. Even the camera on the 7 Plus is really just the original iPhone camera. Repackaged.

I have been happy with my 5S, but realize it's getting long in the tooth. Not going to pay these prices, even if it's close to that. At my age, just think I will pick up an SE and call it a day. It is primarily a phone and email device for me. For consumption, I have my iPad Air2, which I had recently upgraded from my very first iPad. I believe I can use my 5S case on the SE.
Unless Apple comes up with a new Mac Mini or equivalent priced desktop (no iMac for me), this could be the last $$$ they get from me. And believe me, over the last 33 years, I have spent plenty on Apple.

It's you who originally said that you can get a $150 discount if you buy it outright at Walmart.
No I said Walmart had $150 off. I didn't say anything about buying outright.

The original post a guy said you may have to put some money down and I said I didn't remember putting anything down on my iPhone 6Plus other than paying tax

I then said I bought my son a S8+ and all I paid down was the tax when I upgraded his line. I said walmart had $150 of the S8 & S8 Plus so that $150 off made the S8 Plus $699 instead of the regular $849 it would have been.

Well hello iPhone 7s/8. Give me the goods, and I'll pay the price. Give me same old or slightly updated, with lots of marketing spin, and I'll avoid you like he plague. Simple economics: decision making with limited resources.

Stubbornly sticking to older technology hurts you even more than Apple.

Apple licensed silicon modules from a few companies, paid another company to manufacture the design in their fab, and you have the A4 and A10. They buy the camera modules pre-assembled too. Then they pay an assembler to put it all together for them.

Apple's only innovation -- on phone hardware specifically -- is choosing what parts to order from where. Well...their real innovation is buying the cheapest parts and yet charging the most for their phone.

Well of course...how could sticking with Apple products hurt Apple?

Really love all the "I'm out" statements here. Ya. Ok. Many will be first in line, Apple will have another best seller, and well, the stock will continue to sore, LOL.
That is quite presumptuous of you to accuse people of being liars if you are claiming that the ones that say "I'm out" will be lining up. If you are referring to a different group of people then your comment makes no sense.

So true. Apple was always "a bit" more expensive than the equivalent products from competitors, but now they're really taking a piss.

Like you, I've had Apple products for 4 decades and spent a luxury car's worth on them over that time, but it's now gotten to a point where the difference in "innovation" vs Apple's competitors doesn't justify the even higher prices than in the past.

I also went from a 5S to an SE but detoured via a 6 first, because I wanted the 128GB. I didn't like the size, cause like you I have an Air 2 for that immersive entertainment experience, but for mobility, the 4" phone factor is perfect.
That and no camera bumps and reasonably priced.
Only wish I'd waited for the 128Gig SE they have now.

The reason why Apple can do this today is because no one, except the handful of suckers who buy unlocked at full retail and think they are beating the system, will see it as $1000. It is $49/mon for 12 months, then trade up and continue.
So if I plan on keeping my iPhone 7 Plus for 3-4 years, how exactly is my paying full retail considered being a sucker? (Actually got a nice discount on it through Best Buy but that's neither here nor there.)

Like all past iPhones I've read about in forums, this one is way over priced and I tell now that I would never pay that much... then I buy it after the mad rush is over.

I'm pretty excited for a new iPhone. But once my phone hits $1k mark I'll probably draw the line. Guess I'll stick with the 6s plus another year. Perhaps if T-Mobile allows for a free upgrade sort of promotion I'll bite.
