Apple iPod event always first tuesday of Sept -> so we can expect Sep 7th as iPod event and announcement of iPod touch new generation

The last two years it was on September 9 - in 2008 that was a Tuesday, in 2009 it was a Wednesday. Also in 2008 that was clearly the second Tuesday of the month, not the first. Try again :p

Okay, I've brightened the visible area of the display and taken some measurements. The size of the home button is unlikely to change. The iPad's is the same size as the iPhones. The size is 11.20 mm diameter.

The screen appears to be 7.5 home buttons tall, which is 3.3" or so.

The iPhone display is ~2.9" tall. Assuming the displays are the same aspect ratio, which I doubt they'd change, then this display could be 4" at most, which would be 288dpi.

Im guess the measurements are incorrect. The display is probably just the same size as the iPhone. :(

The current home button is 10mm diameter which at x7.5 would make it the same as the current screen size of 750mm across

I have been had

Damn your hide Steve Jobs. You have infested my life with an iPod Touch. Too late I learned it really is a demon familiar which you have caused to made in huge numbers in your plot, along with the help of Pinky and The Brain, to take over the world. God help me I am possessed. I feel separation anxiety when I forget to take it to work with me. Crap, now I can't wait for the iPod Touch 4G. I want one I can't help myself. I want one. :D

I may be possessed. I may even be a fanboy. God how did this happen. But at least my Touch helps me through a work day in an office inhabited by a$$holes, backstabbers, women who must be clones of Nancy Pelosi, who would insult dogdom if you called them a female dog's name. Bosses who are Dark Lords of the Sith. All this in an environment that is like the underworld in the movie Spawn. Through all of this my Touch talks to me with music, podcasts, iTunesU, and audio books. I have this grin on my face that drives the paranoid types at work wacky. I chuckle under my breath at stuff they can't hear, they stare at me thinking I am sinking ever deeper into dementia. At the end of the day I unplug myself go home and I am untouched by the preceding 8 hours.:) Beats living a life soaked with Lord Zoloft, or Prince Prozac. ;)

Will the retina display make it's way to the Touch as well?
Where's that rear camera from last year? FaceTime allows you show what you're seeing and yourself... so should we assume there's a rear camera as well?

This will definitely help to get the 10s of millions of FaceTime devices Jobs said would be out there.

iPad rumors.... GO! :D

I want a rear camera more than a front-facing one.

Also, I hope the 64GB model is affordable (meaning not $400). 32GB really is too small these days for me.

That's the stupidest theory I've heard.

It will also be the way they keep the price down low. The iPad is going to lead the capacities of all of these. Maybe the ipod touch will be the same, but I really have a strong feeling it won't.
Why would you pay $699 for an iPad with 64GB when you can get a new iPod touch with nearly the same resolution screen and a forward facing camera for $399

Otherwise they'll have to up the price point. Remember Apple is all about product differentiation and making sure the "must have" feature only exists on one model...
the iPhone has the phone and the camera, the iPad has the higher res and the higher storage. The iPod touch will have..... price only?? can't do it. You MUST up the cpu specs because of iOS 4, and you really have to up the screen resolution too, otherwise there's no compelling need to upgrade. Apple themselves are going to push the front camera because of the desire to get more facetime devices out there.

That only leaves storage on the battlefield.

A front facing VGA camera is the only camera you will see in the new Touch.

And why would that be? Honestly, if there is going to be one camera, its the back one. Why?

Because it gets more use for it. With the front facing camera, all you would get is taking profile pictures a lot easier, Facetime, and possibly those gimmicky "eye-toy"-like games.

The back camera can also take profile pictures, and those point-and-shoot situations. And if you look at all the Social networking sites, you would know that those point-and-shoot situations happen more times than Facetime and the eye-toy games would have. If Apple was smart enough, having a back-facing camera would effectively replace the stardard digital camera for the ordinary person.

Prediction of ad slogan:

"Reach out and iPod Touch someone."

Boy, would that make AT&T mad. :) Doesn't quite roll off the tongue though.

Back to the drawing board.

There's a litte thing called forward progression that Apple incorporates into their business practices.

But I do get where you're coming from. On that front, Apple failed just slightly. Very little differentiates the iPad from the iPod Touch. Even though you all hate this term, it is just a big iPod. The only difference is its screens size and some UI tweaks. For it to be a "tablet", it needed to have been a hybrid between iOS and OS x. It should have also been released with a 128 GB option. I mean, for a device of its size, and for what it's meant for, anything less than 32 GB is really quite useless. You wouldn't be using it to its full potential...

Apple would never cut the 64 GB, top of the line iPod Touch. If anything, they'll update the iPad with 128 GBs and leave the iPod with 64 gigs. You have to remember too, that the drive isn't the only selling point. Some people prefer a larger screen.

Either way, it should be interesting to see the results.

I don't know how to break the news to you but the iPad has a 10 inch screen. Have you tried to read an e-book on a touch. Well I do and the problem I have is I read very fast and it is a royal pain in the butt to change the pages as fast as I have to on it's small screen. I will pay the extra money for the iPad to get the bigger display. I will also get a new Touch 4G 64 gig because I like it's size when I take it to the North Korean re-education camp I work at. :D

The 64 gig iPod Touch is going not going to be discontinued. I would think it would be more likely for the 8 gig version to be dropped. Remember it still has the 2G innards. Perhaps there will be a 32, 64, and 128 gig model. If there is a 128 gig model we just may see the end of the iPod Classic. The Classic and the bogus iPod Shuffle are the only iPod's left that can not do App's.

If said screen does increase in size, then there's no doubt they'd up the resolution. Even if it doesn't, I think it's pretty certain the retina display will come to fruition on the iPod. It serves the purpose of pushing developers to update their apps to HD graphics.

I'm guessing this:

(iPod Touch)
128 GB (Eliminating the iPod Classic, this or next year)
New Design to match iPhone
Front Facing Camera (A back camera, I doubt. It's not Apple's style to do everything at once)
Retina Display

(iPad)
128 GB
Same Design
Front Facing Camera
A back camera is highly doubtful.
(iPhone) Early 2011
64 GB
Redesigned Antenna

To my knowledge, this would fit how Apple rolls their products out. There's a reason the iPhone 4 didn't launch with 64GB. If it had launched as such, there would be no incentive for people to purchase the iPod Touch, and it would also diminish iPad sales by a small margin. This way, they can introduce the 128Gb iPod Touch, place the focus on this and the iPad, then launch a 64Gb iPhone, therein spreading the focus.

Good point. I think that 128 GB iPod touch is possible as the highest end version to replace the 64 GB one and the iPod Classic.

I'm EXTREMELY curious to see what the iPod touch's design would be like. It's highly doubtful to be double-glass as the iP4, but maybe it would be aluminum unibody like the iPad/"iPhone HD" as seen here:

I know that that Apple doesn't like to do multiple things at once, but having a FaceTime VGA front-facing camera and no rear camera is kind of weird (not weird for the iPad--which is normal because it's a "tablet computer", but weird for the iPod)... as if the product is seriously missing something. Maybe we'll get a 2.0/3.2 MP camera fitted in since Apple's technology is always improving, especially for taking pictures and filming videos.

Good point on the iPad though... I don't think the 7-inch that may release later this year could have a front-facing camera, but a 64GB addition to the iP4 line-up with the new "iP5" is likely too. ;)

Oh Apple, just put a camera with FaceTime on the iPad already.

And while you're at it, double the RAM. Pretty please? :D

That is the ugliest prototype/mock up ever conceived. It looks like the sort of phone the military would use :D

I beg to differ, although there's one little problem with it: the rear isn't round like the iPad. Other than that, the aluminum look is way better than the black/white choice or that 1970s easily scratchable chrome. Wish they'd at least do that for the iPod Touch...

I agree, 100%. For one thing, it'll be a great visual match along the new MacBook Pro, iPad, and silver iPod nano (since they all have traces of the silver aluminum, black, and white in their color build-up). :D

I can't wait to get one. I hope they include a 10MP camera.

what good is a 10MP camera that doesn't have a good enough sensor or lens?

This can't be overstated. Most consumers equate more megapixels with higher quality, like people used to equate megahertz to speed in CPUs. Of course, camera and phone manufacturers bank on this confusion, just as we used to poke fun at Intel for doing.

The important metric is pixel density, the lower the better. Camera phones have such tiny sensors you wouldn't want to shoehorn too many [mega]pixels onto them, otherwise each pixel can't collect enough light and you end up with grainy, flat photos.

As GyroFX also points out, there's no point trying to collect a ton of light data if you're looking through a glorified pinhole. Better to have fewer pixels so they at least have a chance of seeing something before the shutter closes, as it were.
