I think bi-directional charging and 5G are obvious omissions. USB-C is a definite nice to have.

What will really make iPhones stand out next year is if they can implement a much more discrete notch design and somehow add pro-motion display without completely killing the battery.

It sounds defeatist but I think I'll give Apple one more chance to get it "right" next year, or I think I will probably jump ship. I entered this ecosystem due to their innovation, but recently compared to some of my Android colleagues my experience has been stagnating (especially on the home automation front). Too often multi-tasking is hit and miss, with apps restarting/refreshing on app switch too frequently.

Apple has become a follower, not an innovator.

Watch his video below. He is right about the things missing that would have really made the 11 Pro a “pro” phone. I’m sure some of these things will come next year with the redesign. I wonder though if Apple didn’t know where to go with naming after XS and XR so decided to bite the bullet and pull out the “pro” nomenclature this year.

Who? I am sorry I do not watch review / influencers videos.

Lol, why does everyone assume next year is going to be a redesign? Its an S year and there is no reason to think that Apple doesn't see the current phone as a redesign with the camera shape.

If anything, the rumors this year should solidify that there ISN'T going to be a redesign and it will be an S model, because almost every rumor was wrong. Why would Apple all of a sudden deviate from releasing an S? There is no reason to believe that they would.

Well they skipped 7S for 8 and skipped 8S for X so why not?

Lol the 8 was the 7S. Anyone arguing that is insane. It’s the exact same phone with wireless charging. And the X was released for the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone. Outside of that it’s S models every year and there is ZERO reason to think any different.

Improved display, faster Face ID, much longer battery life, and that third camera lens is probably going to be enough for me to upgrade my XS Max to the Pro Max. My XS Max has been a buggy phone as well so maybe the 11 Pro will be a little more stable.

I don't feel there's anything wrong with the Pro tag. They wanted to differentiate between the 11 and the upgraded version and they did it with the Pro.

I think Marques does a great job in the video. Quick and to the point.

The cameras look awesome. I have zero use for them but they do look impressive. To me it looks like Apple wanted to have the best cameras in a smartphone and it's hard to argue they're not (right now). Ya the pro name doesn't really suit the device IMO but we all know Apple has been using Pro more and more for marketing and differentiating.

I think John Gruber also makes a good point comparing the iPhone Pro to some of the more expensive Apple Watch models. The ceramic Apple Watch isn’t better than the aluminum one it’s just nicer. For some people that’s worth the extra $$, for others it’s not. Outside of the 3rd lens and the OLED screen there isn’t much different between the 11 and 11 Pro hardware or feature wise. But some people will pay for the OLED screen and stainless steel frame others will think it’s not worth it and get the 11.

The camera on the Mac Pro must be awesome.

"Pro" means "better". That's all. It's no different to "deluxe".
True but the way Schiller was selling, Pro means Professional as in user, not better user.

Pro name has always been due to the camera

That’s Partially True. But the only reason Apple is offering the term ‘Pro’, is because they’re trying to show the consumer what the ‘best’/newest iPhone is.

If you think about it for a minute, when people talk about the newest iPhone, what will they refer to? They’re going to refer to as the ‘iPhone Pro’, which means it’s the ‘top tier’ iPhone offered for 2019. If Apple isn’t dynamic with their marketing titles, consumers are easily confused which phone is the best, being they just released three new models. iPhones are great devices, everyone knows that, but the marketing has to sell the phone or draw the consumer in, that’s why they chose these silly titles.

In my opinion, ’Pro-Max’ is sloppy marketing and hopefully they scrap this moving forward after 2019.

I'm having a hard time remembering the meltdowns when Apple first trotted out the "Pro" moniker on the MBP in 2006 or the iPad.

Shirley most people knew(I did) that it was only a matter of time before it trickled down to the iPhone after the Ipad Pro.

What Schiller is doing is saying hey look at all these things professional photographers and videographers are doing with the iPhone Plus. You, average user, can do that to. In reality though, I think Pro here means premium more than it means professional.

So out of curiosity what innovative features are other manufacturers doing that would make you go to them?

I don’t feel like I’ve seen anything groundbreaking from anyone other than folding screens and I’m not convinced that’s something that will catch on.

Apple seem to be on a three year cycle with design, 6,6s and 7. The 8 was an anomaly really. We have had the X, XS and now the Pro in the same shell, so next year should be a redesign. If anything this year is the XSS year. Just named Pro. Of course I could be wrong but I think a redesign will happen to bring it more in line with the iPad Pro's possibly. Only time and rumours will tell.

Having used bi-directional charging on a Samsung device it worked only in limited situations and isn't that big of a feature to me. 5G is barely available in any markets and has limited use at the moment. Devices are overheating because of the chips and battery life is abysmal. Even when it's available something like a wall or a tree blocking your line of sight with the tower can drop your speeds dramatically. Just check out MKBHD's video about 5G. It's cool tech, but it's not ready for primetime yet.

It seems like a lot of what people are asking for are not practical things that can be done currently. Physical/engineering limitations are real.

MKBHD isn’t wrong here, but I think we’re all probably taking the word “pro” a little too literally.

I believe that all Apple is trying to do is consolidate their iPhone line naming convention while still distinguishing between the base model and the two flagships. So they used the word “pro”. I really do believe it’s nothing more than that.

$1099 for a "Pro" iPhone with 64GB storage doesn't sit well with me. But then again, I won't be buying it...
