there is no "final straw" -- Cook is a rockstar ceo who has been crushing it. he's not a product designer like jobs, but few CEOs are. even still, he's lead the company to record metrics -- sales, profit, size, and consumer satisfaction.

a few tech nerds whining on rumor sites about new macs don't amount to a hill of beans. Apple is in a stronger position than it's ever been, and is the most successful tech firm in the history human race.

Oh here's a tech nerd on a rumor site whining about other tech nerds on rumor sites because they're agitated by the Macintosh slump.

Very effing useful.

Sounds like someone's running out of money and Tidal if failing. only person ruining the music ind for is themselves and Tidal... ?

Clearly he is still trying to sell to Apple. He probably figures if he ends exclusives than he can get Apple to bite. Seems to me like that would make Apple less interested.

Right, and few (if any) companies innovated and grew like Apple did in the "Steve era". That isn't happening under Cook.

even still, he's lead the company to record metrics -- sales, profit, size, and consumer satisfaction.
He's riding the coattails of what Apple was. If you read and listen, Apple's consumers are becoming restless. Services over products. Making money? Yes. But for how long?

Uh...more than a few. And not just tech nerds if you read past the forums. Apple has more money than ever, but in a "stronger position"? Arguable. You can thank Steve Jobs for your last statement.

As luck would have it, you're a radiologist, so you've got plenty of $$$ to buy them all ftw!

Hey if Apple buying Tidal gets all of Prince's music on iTunes (none of his non Warner Brothers stuff is there) and possibly on Music then do it. It's a drop in the bucket $ wise.
Actually it seems like all of his WB stuff is on iTunes and everything else is on Tidal. If they don't get a deal done then I will buy the music from Tidal since they do have a store. Definitely no subscribing because no way can I support Kanye, Jay Z and Beyoncé on a monthly basis.

To be honest, I'd love to use Apple Music instead of Tidal. Although as far as I know Tidal is the only streaming service to offer lossless audio streaming. If Apple offered uncompressed audio streaming, I'd switch.
My subjective listening "tests," which were me listening repeatedly to the three major streaming services on my hifi, placed Tidal last every time; it always sounded edgy and thin. Apple Music sounded best, and I've kept Spotify because of its overall UX. Deezer Elite through a modified Sonos Connect is the best 16/44.1 all around service I've listened to. OraStream and mp4sls is by far the best sounding service I've heard, but handicapped by their limited classical music catalog.

My point is that you might want to compare Apple Music to Tidal again and listen to hear if the qualitative difference is so meaningful and absolute that you must stay with a service you don't want to stay with. If you give professional music demos (risking grief for not using 16/44.1 Tidal), or listen critically with friends, or are using the MQA, then maybe you stay on Tidal? If it's just you and your day and your couch and your car, jump!

Sounds to me like JayZ is doing all the posturing. Calling to get in a room (in public), saying he would not drop his album with Apple ever, then relenting, and of course, Kanye West claimed that the schism between Apple Music and rival streaming music service Tidal is negatively affecting the music industry as a whole. Schism? Whole industry? Not relenting?

Firstly Apple has no obligation to buy Tidal, no matter the financial impact to the owners. If Apple were to become the owner it would be as everything else they do, be to enhance the customer experience, within a margin goal they have. That's part of how pricing will be determined. Also the existing revenues are almost the entire equation.

If they are looking to Beats as the pricing model, forget it. They got over modulated headphones set for rap (they could have done that), and almost all the price was to get the talent locked in for years.

Apple gets the Tidal talent through normal distribution channels. The owners are not likely to become valuable Apple employees shifting their existing and future profits (selling them) for the benefit of Apple's shareholders. They effectively formed their own label to bypass the normal record label meme. Now they have learned it is hard.

Oh man. I hope TC responds in the form of a highly polished, rap video in bed with Dre and a Kanye lookalike.
He really needs to get street on this, throwing lead out of a gat Cupertino style, West coast.

Kanye is so dope*.

* In the full traditional sense of the word.

I actually give Kanye credit, I'm surprised he is smart enough to even know who Tim Cook is.
He thinks Tim IS A cook somewhere.

Hard hitting journalism from MR. But what did Kanye have for breakfast this morning?!?!?
Not humble pie, that I can assure you!

This picture reveals Tim Cook as the buffoon he is.

Jumping in bed with Rap Icons, buying Beats for Street Cred is a stellar example of how much Apple can get away with... at least for now.

With Apple running on autopilot over the last few years, he's proven that being a figurehead allows him the freedom to cavort at will.

It's good to be Timmy

Steve Jobs courted rap icons way before Tim. Tim bought beats mostly for Jimmy, not rap icons. And as much complaining about Tim I see on MR. No one can deny that Apple has been more profitable under his reign than SJ.

Apple will definitely acquire Tidal, as it perfectly fits their strategy ("to be the place where music happens").

However, they're surely not in a hurry; they will let them... Cook in their own chowder for another while.

Cook would be an idiot to give the green light to buy Tidal. You can be assured that if Apple does that, the entire music industry will slam the door shut on him and will ask the government to kick his a$$ for one reason:

MONOPOLY.

It IS colossally stupid to buy Beats and then Tidal both, and all the while trying to propose rate changes to force Spotify to comply. All this alone makes Apple a bigger a$$--le. They can't afford to have that kind of image with this ' My Way or the Highway ' attitude anymore especially unjustifiable with Cue around, who's been part of the problem.

Not only that, if Apple buys out Tidal, the TV industry will be more reserved and cautious and say ' F U Cook. No TV deals for you '.

I highly doubt the Tidal purchase has anything to do with the lossless audio stream quality and more to do with killing the competition and grabbing more libraries of albums. Why the hell would Apple want to do that when they should be FOCUSING on improving Apple Music and spin Beats Radio out as a separate app to clean up the UX.

The answer is NOT BUY! BUY! BUY! BUY! That reeks of laziness.

"To be the place where music happens?". Give me a break! The REAL place where music happens was MTV and they pulled it off masterfully in the 80s and 90s, far better than what Apple can.

Pfft! Cook is not ' street ' enough to handle Tidal.

The biggest problem with Apple and their execs is because they have a " Valley Girl " mentality. Even Cook. Apple needs a real boss, EAST COAST godfather style.

He just wants a payday like Dre because he's broke.
With the lack of proper grammar in that Tweet, you know there are a few dozen working for him for next to nothing hoping for the same.

The anount of money Kayne pays for security is unreal. Love to know how many Kayne upset tried to penetrate his security recently. I keep on thinking, if he doesn't keep his mouth shut, his money will run out and he'll end up like Jam Master Jay.

You don't know how it works out west. Anyone tries to run Apple "EAST COAST godfather style" would have the butt handed to them.

Tidal believes, like the cable channel owners, if they take their negotiations public they will be able to publicly embarrass Apple and pressure them to agree to their terms. But they forget Apple is the one in the position of power and Apple can wait it out until they concede to their terms. They need Apple, Apple doesn't need them.

Wrong. They don't NEED Apple because the jig is up and they already see through Tim and Cue's BS.

I have to disagree because east and west coast are different in thinking and style. From my experience, east coasters don't take crap. I was born and raised in a city that destroyed the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals and know how tough people are in that town. They certainly don't have that " Tim Cook " mentality. Now I live in the Northeast region of the US and still see an interesting parity of hardworking people and those who are laid back. An interesting parallel to Portland, OR and Vermont ( in some aspects ). But the Midwest was something else.

EDIT: I've seen gangbangers around in my old 'hood so I know how it goes.

My point is that the Apple execs have a 'valley girl' mentality and I don't think it's working. They don't have Mr. Jobs around anymore to restore order, focus and discipline.

I had opted for a free Tidal introductory trial before it turned into "the Jay-Z Spotify". Deleted it as soon as the 3-month period expired because I found the UX abysmal, the library lacking, and cared even less for its new ownership. One thing I see in it for Apple, technically, is the merit of Tidal's alleged "lossless" audio streaming.
Lossless audio is not a Tidal-first. Apple could easily have provided a 'lossless' audio service years ago… if it wanted to. But it's apparent it's not their priority to provide some hi-fi-audio lossless service.
