Its normal since the X is the future of the normal iPhone ! The future of the Plus is coming next year
Now I believe genius apple marketing.
I am happy with iPhone X but I think that people wants plus version of X.
Breaking $1000 phone price is not easy to do but seems like people are willing to pay for it.
Next or two years later, Apple will be able to boost their earnings for selling $1300-150p X plus version.

Since Apple won’t stop selling iPhone 8, it’s okay to reduce production.

Most people will keep the phones for two years, spend $200 more in 2 years, it's really a big deal?

I'm waiting for the iPhone Xs or whatever they call it, next year. Hopefully the price will come down a couple hundred bucks, just like the original iPhone.
It’s Apple’s lowest priced phone, so don’t expect larger screen, no bezels, FaceID instead of TouchID, etc. because then it would be a $700 phone even without OLED.

I expect a refresh next year to A10 but what other changes make sense on this lowest tier phone?

I woud gladly pay $700 for the guts and features of a iPhone X in the form-factor of a 5 SE. In fact, I would pay $1000. It's not about the price for me... it's all about the form factor. I prefer a smaller phone, and my wife won't even consider anything larger than her SE.

Im actually surprised the 8+ sells well, considering the small price difference to the X.
You must be really in a hurry to buy this instead of the X just to have it faster.
For people who are looking to buy a new iphone the 7 makes the most sense if you want to get a good price for value.
I think the 7 cannibalises more 8 sales than the the 8+.

For next year i expect this:

iPhone X 2: $899
iPhone X 2+: $1099
iPhone X SE: $699 (released together with the other models this time)
iPhone 8: $599 (with less color and storage options as usual)

(prices are for lowest storage options)

Honestly if you’re in the market for the 8 save yourself the extra $120 and get a 7 instead. The differences are basically nonexistent.

There’s actually quite a lot of difference.

* Faster SoC and Motion Processor (A11/M11)
* Marginally larger dimensions and weight (uses same cases)
* Bluetooth 5.0 vs. 4.2 (4x range, 2x transfer speed, supports 2 devices simultaneously, better audio)
* Video playback in 24 fps and 60 fps for 4K video, in addition to 30 fps
* Video playback slow motion 1080 @ 240 fps
* Video playback in DolbyVision and HDR10
* CPU 6 core (2 hi-perf) vs. 2+2; _____ GHz vs. 2.34 GHz
* Custom GPU 25% - 30% faster
* Wireless charging - superset of Qi standard
* New gyroscope and accelerator (AR)
* Advanced LTE cellular, band 66 "gigabit LTE"

* New camera sensor:
* 83% more light
* better color saturation
* wider dynamic range
* lower noise in pictures
* No shutter lag (due to A11)

* True Tone display (warmth based on ambient light); improvements in color accuracy
* NFC in reader mode vs. NFC for Apple Pay only (reader mode: capable of reading any NFC Forum-mandated tag types)
* Fast charging, 50% charge in 30 minutes (requires suitable power adapter)
* Japan's QZSS and European Union's Galileo GPS constellation systems
* Stronger glass (not GG5 but something stronger per Apple)
* 25% louder speakers, more bass

Must be my environment. Face ID has failed about 4 times since I got the X on the 3rd. In all cases, I was outside in bright sunlight. Otherwise, it always works... glasses, contacts, sunglasses, day, night. Very good solid tech! Love the X
I see you're in Glendale, Arizona... I don't expect any bright sunlight for a while in the UK. I wonder if Apple has tested FaceID in dense fog...

The thing is that there's no reason why the smaller size iPhone needs to be the lowest tier. This idea that screen size = tier needs to go away. I would suggest Apple would do well with:

Premium phones: small, medium, large
Moderate phone: medium,
Inexpensive: small

That would serve most needs pretty well. I like my SE and I had a larger phone but dislike them. Why should I be forced to a low tier simply because I want a smaller form factor? I'm perfectly willing to pay more for an equivalent iPhone X in a smaller form factor. I wouldn't expect it to be $400 at all. I'd pay $799 for it most likely. But forcing smaller form factors to be generations behind in tech for a price point is forcing people's hands. No one can say whether an iPhone X SE (SE-X?, lol) would sell well or not but I suspect it would.
I hear what you’re saying, but I think demand is the reason why the smallest phone is the lowest tier only. Remember how the SE came about in the first place. Apple basically updated an older model with newer internals, which gave them a low cost phone they can sell to India and other price sensitive areas, and allowed them to satisfy (and to some extent test) demand for smaller phones at the same time.

With SE market share at about 5% (est but even if it were 10%) and a lot of those sales due to price, that leaves little apparent demand for a X version SE. Overwhelmingly, people want larger phones, even when small phones are quite a bit less expensive.

Also, people who like the physical size of the SE and/or the 4.0” screen size would both be (at least slightly) less satisfied with a X type SE, since both the body and screen would be taller, affecting pocketabily and reachability, respectively. And it would zero out demand at the lowest price tier.

For those reasons, I really don’t see Apple adding a smaller X model, but a X Plus model seems almost certain. I do think the SE will be refreshed in the spring, with an A10 or ideally A11, which would give the phone another 3 years of selling life.

Not so sure . The X price point and moving away from touchid is not for everyone . The iPhone 8 is a very nice unit

Just can't see people deciding to get a X over the 8 all the sudden.... it's £300 more..... that is a very large amount .

Look again. The "people" seem to be disagreeing with you.

Geez I hope not..... that plus X will be like
£1350 + £200 AC+ ....... £1550 for a phone.... it needs to stop

It will...when they stop selling. But that doesn't seem to be the case now, does it?

But a X model SE would be a larger form factor. Both the exterior and the screen would gain vertical height, affecting pocket ability to some extent, and reachability to a larger extent. If you can no longer reach the top and bottom of the screen with your thumb without changing grip, are you and your wife still interested in a X type SE?

The current market share of the SE, and the lower sales of even the 4.7” size, don’t seem to support demand for a X based SE that would sell at twice the current SE price.

I think pricing will lower for the normal x next year and plus will take its place.
I absolutely agree. I expect $899 for the 2018 X and $999 for the new X Plus. Identical features on both, except size of battery and screen. No reason these price points shouldn’t be achievable at the X’s current margins.

Or they could price 2018 X/X Plus a little higher at $949/1049, and sell the 2017 X at $849. Drop the 8/8 Plus to the $599/699 price point, and the 7 at $449/549.

But will there be a follow-on to the 8, or can they go all-OLED? Can Samsung supply enough OLED for 3 models next fall? I.e. 2017 X (sold at $799?), 2018 X and 2018 X. That’s a lot of panels, and Samsung could only supply about 80MM in total this year, according to rumor.

One question, the lack of home button, faceid is not my issue, was that a gradual transition for you or quick? I still miss the home button for navigation.
I actually really missed the home button for about a day and a half - too much muscle memory I guess... now, when I pick up my iPhone 7 (work) I sit there, waiting, wondering why the unlock screen won't go away.

I don't think that I totally dig the "slide up" process to get into multi-task mode and see all my other applications - there needs to be a better way (double tap the screen? IDK); however, it's becoming second nature pretty quickly.

Gotta love the “thisbis a bad idea” comments. One would think Apple has intimate knowledge of past and present sale trends. They seem to have damn near hit launch day demands. I tend to consider myself a skeptic but this is one segment where I feel like the opinion of some guy once an Internet forum likely isn’t on par with what supply/demand is actually occurring.

What you’re calling a 5SE is more like a 6SE. It’s a 6S, generationally, in an iPhone 5 size.

It’s Apple’s lowest priced phone, so don’t expect larger screen, no bezels, FaceID instead of TouchID, etc. because then it would be a $700 phone even without OLED.

I expect a refresh next year to A10 but what other changes make sense on this lowest tier phone?
Eh. It’s really a hybrid of a 6 and a 6S. Even though it has the A9, it also has first-generation Touch ID and a camera without OIS.

Even if I agree with your thoughts, this article is for sure. It’s statistics.

Back to having one model only. One Size, One Storage, One Price.

Back to Steve Jobs' Simplification. The reality is the pricing than options withholding people, 2nd-hand or older models are bringing transparency to the very fact.
Bring back the 17" MacBook, price it same as the smaller screen sizes, than look at the response. iPad Air & iPad Pro-Pra-Pre-Pru is illogical nonsense for profitary greed. In addition, just have one storage tier but of maximum capacity affordable by the technological limitations of the time, ex- the Classic iPod is classic for a reason.
No. Apple won’t chow to lose sales by restricting options.

Lower than expected sales? Surely this was planned?

iPhone X releases and production slows proportionally based on a more flooded market of iPhones (3 instead of 2), as well as being able to gauge demand of X and adjust rescources appropriately. So if X sells 20% better than expected then it cannibalized their own product line so it’s only logical to make adjustments.

So there’s a good chance that the only “unexpected” part was in their popularity of a particular line, not overall phone sales.

EDIT: Ok so I just found this article after posting but it’s basically exactly what I said: http://appleinsider.com/articles/17...ting-alongside-cutback-in-orders-for-iphone-8

I'm not sure it's "all of a sudden" I think it was that way since the announcement.

Also Touch ID, seriously, you'll never want to use it again. Face ID is just like having your phone unlocked all the time.

I actually find to Touchid to be faster than faceid to be honest, the issue is actually the home button . I could live with faceid
