Although I dont like the prospects of the new iPhone, I believe there must be something interesting behind all of this.

Either Apple is really leaking this on purpose and they will marvel the people with a good surprise, or Cooks double down on security is totally crap and they are coming with that long phone with different resolution and fragmented hardware for their software. I dont think its gonna fail, but Ill certainly wait a lot to see what the extra screen is gonna do in favor for the phone. They must have something interesting to see.

my theory is we will see 2 phones. The one everyone is seeing photos of, and then a higher-end model with a 4-5" screen and some other game changer.

but i will probably be wrong, and iphone 5 will be a 4S with a tall screen, and they will have all time high profits driven by overseas growth where people just want to own American brands

I thought the announcement was the 12th?

1. Will be the 12th. Has not happened yet.
2. MacRumors always expect things way before the mouth of Apple speaks. Nice predictions they are. But for expectations? I only listen to the mouth of Apple for those.

Lol, a lot of us thought that last time.

Does anyone else find it odd that MR has a banner across the top of their site saying that the next iPhone will be announced September 12th. There's no official announcement from Apple. That's still a month away, and they've had the banner for over a week now, unless I'm mistaken. Even if Apple has it planned to do it that date, they could change their mind if things aren't quite ready then.

You mean even our beloved MacRumors acts like a sleazy tabloid sometimes?

Yes Virginia it's true.

Keep reminding them about the virtues of journalism.

It's our only hope.

Yup. The people on this forum seem largely incapable of counting to 6 and realizing this is the 6TH GENERATION iPHONE

EVERYONE here knows its the 6th Gen. What does that have (when has it ever had) anything to do with the name of the phone? Only one time in 5 previous models has the numeric model matched the generation. Pretty low ratio there.

The 12th is pretty certain. You can choose not to believe it, or hold some disbelief, but for those who are passing by the site, that's what they need to know "the 12th" is it.

The 2nd gen iPhone was called a 3G, the 5th gen was called a 4S. So why couldn't they chose to call the 6th gen a iPhone 5?

You do realize the iPhone 3G was called that because it was the first iPhone to have 3G speeds, right? The "3" did not have anything to do with the numbering or the generation.

Just saying. I have no idea what the new one will be called but we should find out soon.

Other even larger publications known to be a Apple mouthpiece have confirmed and reported the same. Your concern is unfounded. If they change their mind, then the headline changes. No big deal.

Seven publications, including the NYT, Reuters, and Bloomberg have confirmed the 12th date.

MacRumors is a rumour site and visitors to the site are complaining because there's "too many leaks"?

Yeah eventually this growth will slow as the market becomes saturated. Then Apple will move onto a new product and neglect the iPhone, like the iPod and Mac desktops.

lol dude its the pattern iphone, iphone 3g iphone 3gs,iphone 4 ,iphone 4s, next will be iphone 5, iphone 5s,iphone 6,iphone 6s and so on thats would be strange the Xs they usually upgrade the same phone and tweak it and then the next number they change the phone phones look and more upgrades, well so far they have

While very possible, I think we shouldn't ignore the removal of the numbering on the new iPad. I think this may finally be the time when Apple drops the model # in the iPhone name.

You know the iMac G5 was the third generation iMac.
The iPhone 3G was the second generation iPhone.

Just because there's a number in the name doesn't mean it NEEDS to reflect the generation of the product. Nobody is arguing with you about how this is the sixth generation iPhone, but will it be called that? No, probably not.

why are you and ppl saying the iphone 5 is jut an iphone 4s with a taller screen? if thats how u think isnt the iphone 4 just an iphone 3s witha glass back instead of plastic? and if so isnt the iphone 3s just the 1st iphone but with plastic instead of metal ? so this new iphone 5 will just be an iphone 1 with a taller screen according to how you think.... lol ppl every iphone looks the same from the front they change the back and upgrade camera and hardware! the faceplate will never change! (maybe they will take off home button in future) but i cannt wait for the iphone 5 its gonna be sleeker and have metal back not glass and upgraded hardware! *** hang on my iphone 3s ..keep hanging on.....**

Why would employees risk losing their jobs smuggling busted parts out of the shop?

Because the potential payoff from selling leaked parts might be worth several weeks/months salary

You could be right. There is demand for experienced tech workers in China, so they could make explanations and get another job.

Why wouldn't Apple engage in a little disinformation to teach a few competitors a few lessons?

Because A) they've never done it in the past and B) we'll eventually see it with the shields off containing new parts that will be too new to be from a past prototype.

A) doesn't mean they won't do it this time. On B: too new? maybe from six months ago? and still not parts for the next launch.

If the economy were booming along like it was in say 2004 then I'd say losing a job as an employee of a supplier or as a supplier to Apple, no biggie. Now? Maybe not a problem for a rogue employee, since there are still jobs to be had on the lines. But the suppliers themselves might be pretty reluctant to risk losing Apple's custom in an uncertain global market this next couple years. Apple can take a spec elsewhere in Asia or to Brazil or Mexico and get it made up, maybe not from preference but to make a point, for awhile.

See I think they really are getting tired of the leaks they don't orchestrate themselves. Of course I could be totally wrong and Tim Cook could be "doubling down" on bull&$%& for his own reasons (to impress his board?), and has had his feet planted on the desk conducting leak schedules over the phone like a symphony orchestra conductor. But I don't read him that way. He's seems more literal minded than to say something like that and not mean it. I think he means to lock things down better, and because of his familiarity with the supply chain can also make it stick, at least going forward.
