Lol? What could make you prefer nVidia to ATI? Is it the time bomb aspect of the current chips, or their (lifelong) inferior image quality?

What time bomb????

Not really concerned about having the latest, greatest. More concerned with reliable, stable hardware and drivers. My gaming PCs (at home and with my kids and grandkids) all moved to ATI over the past year. Nvidia cards required too much power, and the DX10 drivers for our current favorite, Company of Heroes, were awful. Mostly using 4870, 3870, 2600 and 3470. Can't get the best frame rates and highest resolutions with some of those, but they all work, even with only modest CPUs and power supplies.

Additionally, on the Mac side, we are never going to get the greatest GPU so let's get one that works very well on OS X and has decent Windows performance with no hint of imminent failure. Right now that means ATI.

Cheers,

I'm not concerned about the latest and greatest, I just want a MacBook Pro to use.

You guys obviously haven't been in the high-end GPU know-how for the past few years. Between the 9800 (ati) and the new 4870X2's, ATI was beaten constantly by nvidia. I'm talking flagship cards. The 8800GTX is still formidable, too.

Many of us are very well aware of this. And we're aware that before the 9700 Pro demolished the Ti 4600, the 4600 trampled the 8500-- even when ATI tweaked their drivers to run demos at lower quality (i.e. Quake III) for higher frame rates.

But we're also aware that Apple isn't all about gaming. The PC world is the rest of the world. Apple is one niche company which has its own platform (OS X), and so all the same rules don't apply.

We're also aware that Pro apps seem to be favoring ATI's cards.

You obviously haven't been following this for the past couple years.

I am 99% sure that it will happen in august. There is just no reason for Apple to delay it more. So, the only question is what tuesday (or day) will it be in august. I would like it next week but I wouldn't mind be it on 12th. :)

So, lets wait and see. If I could wait 6 months for Mac Pro then this is a piece of cake. :)))

How many posts like this have we seen all summer?
...now its just "September" instead...

... and then when October comes and goes?

I have a bad feeling we'll be waiting until MWSF to see any notebook updates. And even then they might not redesign the MBP/MB, and opt to do that instead when Nehalem mobile chips are out.

Sigh.

If Apple doesn't redesign the notebooks soon, I could see them turning their attention far away from their computer side and start doing a bunch of gadgets. I really hope this doesn't happen. The rumors of this redesign have been in circulation since the beginning of this year. It was originally expected to come out in June or July, but never did. The Macbook Pro is in desperate need of a redesign, the current case looks very outdated compared to the rest of the computers. The Macbook Pros are also very expensive for the hardware compared to the competition.

The Macbooks also need to be updated to move away from the plastic. Apple is trying to make it's products more eco friendly, and their plastic Macbooks aren't helping. I really would be surprised if we don't see something the end of September or early October. I wouldn't be surprised if all this waiting is due to the iPhone and MobileMe mess. On the other hand, they had enough time to create a new iPod. They have to have new notebooks coming, it just doesn't make sense for them not to.

I believe your right, I just posted this in another thread, but I found on apple's website the following:

"Responsible Manufacturing

Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in its products, and arsenic in the glass of flat-panel displays by the end of 2008."

Here is the link to the page:

So it has to be soon I would believe, hopefully end of this month as Im too excited to see the new design

Seriously, where the hell are the new MacBook Pros? I've been waiting to get a new computer to replace a 4 year-old PowerBook, but right now it's just not cost-effective compared to what I can get on the Wintel side.

my guess

i think that there is going to me an event to release to announce the new macbooks on oct.14 and they will be available to buy on oct.21 since the free printer promotion ends on the 20 and apple tends to release new products on tuesdays.....

what do you guys think makes sense doesnt it???

i dont really think a september release makes scense just simply because all the magazines can have the new ipods on the cover of this months magazines and the new macbooks on next month magazines...

The 14th is also a Tuesday. And how many times do people need to be told that those printer promotions have nothing to do with release cycles?

October 14-15th seems about right. It'll be 30 days after the B2S promotion ends, which means no returns for people who got the free ipod and want the new macbooks. :)

I hope its the 14th. I want a free printer. Having it be wifi would be nice, since my router doesn't have a usb connection.

Question: I am considering getting an iPod Touch 16GB (new version). Do you think that would help ease the suffering of waiting for MacBook Pros?

Ok, that's a little dramatic, but you know what I mean.

You would rather get a higher MacBook pro than an iPod Touch. You wouldn't know the new difference between the three tiers. Wait... That's what i would do. I would not do the same mistake I did last year. :(

haha, I was just having a look at my bank account to see if I can afford an iPod touch 8GB :)

Upcoming MacBook to get graphics from NVIDIA

Set to be unveiled in the next few weeks, the new MacBooks will feature the new MCP7A-U graphics chipset from NVIDIA. This is a top class chipset and could easily fall in line with the GeForce 9xxx series. It will be the first mainstream uATX motherboard with DDR3-1333 support. They say that this is the fastest mGPU.

Still waiting.....

Going to college without a notebook for fear of being inferior? One thing.

Having your only lifeline to the outside world fail on you? Another thing.

Now my iPhone won't come out of sleeping...can't reset or anything.
All my notes are on there, and I'm screwed. Still waiting for my fully loaded MBP :[

Well I couldnt wait anymore and to be honest I'm glad I didnt. I can't imagine needing more computer than what I bought.
