They might only give us the pre-order announcement a day in advance instead of two… With a device as popular as the new MBA I do t see why they should go without pre-orders.
Also there’s the MKBHD “leak”, where he accidentally (?) showed several of his calendar entries in a very recent video. The entries were called something like “Apple MBA briefing” scheduled for Thursday, and “Apple MBA embargo ends” for next week Thursday. Given that MKBHD 100% has access to review devices beforehand, this might prove promising.

No validation in the US. They briefly were switching to some credential system but they reversed course.
Note that the education discount is limited to one notebook per purchaser per year. So you'll likely need your spouse or one of your twins to actually be the buyer of the second machine.

Is it best to just have them each log into their own Apple ID's when logging into the Apple Store to place the pre-order?

Someone told me they had better luck ordering thru the iPhone app rather than the website. Any tips like that? Will they go on sale exactly at 5:00am Pacific Time, or does it sometimes go live a few minutes early?

Yeah I think the website asks you to login last while the app has you logged in from the get-go. Make sure your primary payment method in the app is updated with all the latest info including home adress etc.
Also keep in mind that when the 13" Pro M2 launched on the store it took 30ish minutes for many of the BTO options to be available for purchase. Might see something strange like that again and in that case one needs to keep the head cool
