i'll never understand why people don't want to make the internet a more positive place.
It's because people have different opinions and different aims. Perhaps they find themselves unaffected by what you consider to be negativity on the internet.

when was the last time you walked up to a stranger and said 'your shirt is god-awful, you're a moron for wearing it' or 'your website is ugly, what a monstrosity! i hate it, Person i've Never Met!!!'
Never, which was also the last time I posted anything similar online. I have to agree, though, I find purely judgmental, baseless comments to be inherently unhelpful. "This sucks" is as useless to me as "this rocks".

i'm not saying the internet should be negativity free, i'm just saying barely anyone picks their battles. no one actually thinks 'does this REALLY affect my way of life, or am i just being a jackazz?'
'Jackazz' is an incredibly subjective, interestingly spelled term, and you're the only one to use it here—albeit in a hypothetical—so far. The people you think are being jackazzes (jackazzez?) don't think they are.

negativity has a place and is an essential tool for change. but people seem to be so narcissistic on the internet, 'change' just amounts to 'do what i want the way i want it or i'm a very vocally unhappy person and everyone should know this.'
You do realize you've posted a comment advocating for everybody to be less negative based on things that you value, right? We're all narcissists.

someone even mentioned this new redesign sacrifices function for form, and yet another mentioned jony ive. i have yet to notice how either of these are based in reality.
You have yet to notice how either are based on reality? Well, then, they aren't. :p Some issues with the new design, which seems to trade a bit of bad for a bit of good and vice-versa, are:
  • A lack of animated avatars
  • A lack of Avatar Transparency
  • A design that is potentially too bright
  • The inability to control number of posts per page
  • A lack of user photo albums
I think people find the airing of grievances (however frivolous), the validation of others' agreement, and the addressing of those issues to be a positive experience. You don't like it, so you posted a comment, just like them.

These may have been mentioned earlier, but I can't figure out how to search this one forum and there's 19 pages of comments...

  • Can we search one forum?
  • There seems to be a ton of wasted space in the layout
  • We really, really need a way to see if anyone has already quoted a post. No point quoting to make a point someone else already has...

Honestly, we agree. We are far too busy designing to redo our own website. We do our very best to let our work speak for itself.

Well if you're so busy then you can afford to have someone design you a decent website. You don't have to do it yourself, in fact it's often better for a graphic studio not to design their own stuff. I wasn't meaning to be rude, it really is impossible to look at. I wanted to but it was like an animated gif.

You mean like I suggested? If it can be done by a user I would do it. What do you mean with "home page"? The address forums.macrumors.com where I see all the big items with small titles for all the subforums?

Could it be placed in the PRSI or current events, maybe? Maybe I'll start a poll there and if someone sees one of the several threads about the new forum style, one can post there and tell, that there is a poll buried somewhere in the "community discussions" -> "current events".

Or maybe put it here? -> macrumors.com news-discussion https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/macrumors-com-news-discussion.4/
Am I allowed to start a poll there as normal user? One could justify it by saying, that it is discussing the news, that there is a new forum style.

I guess what I meant by "Home Page" is the main landing page where articles are posted when new -- the main www macrumors address (not the forums.") I think it would be very easy to miss here in the forums. Fine for continuation; and of course if you would like to do this in the forums, it's your choice. But, I was hoping the MR staff would create and manage the poll.

The search is a bit hidden but if you tap on search and then the gear, you can do more specific searches. I'll make it more obvious.

#3 is interesting but would require a plugin. Maybe after we get some other stuff done

My only problem is I used to go to the main forum page and I could see all the latest post under each topic. The new design doesn't allow that I have to go into each subject to see whats up. I just feel lost I don't know what topic I want to look at.

Have to tried marking everything as read when you leave the forum then when you return just hit the new post button?

"Request Desktop Site" does not work AT ALL.
God I hate mobile mode only, and its endless scrolling!!

FFS, why not give users the bloomin' option MR?!?!?

That's because there is no "desktop site", there is only one responsive theme/layout.. there is currently no other option. Your screen size dictates the layout.
Yes I get that, but the text is MUCH bigger than I need or want to read = bad user experience.
They should instead make text size variable (thus amount we can see and less we have to scroll) accordingly, preferably both on the fly AND via a per user forum setting.

I just had to pickup my ipad to read the site, as doing so on my iphone was making my finger numb from having to scroll so damn much.

We will see about respecting the desktop cookie. I think it's doable.

Something I have noticed in the Marketplace is the lack of colour for different prefixes. I think it would be good to have different colours for the prefixes. Makes it much easier to go through the thread when you are looking for something. Not sure if that is possible, but was just something I noticed.

And now, I get a notification even my post was not quoted...
Is this intentional?

Yep, I noticed that too. You can go to Watched Threads to check and remove all the threads you don't want notifications about.

By default, Xenforo makes you watch threads you reply to; this setting can disabled in your Preferences:

You've come a long way, baby!

Over the weekend, we launched a new version of the MacRumors Forums. Beyond a long overdue redesign, we also migrated to a new discussion platform called XenForo.

The MacRumors Forums have been running since 2001 and have over 800,000 members and 20,000,000 posts. We have discussions documenting the first iPod, the first iPhone and the death of Steve Jobs.

The move to a new software platform brings us a number of new features, including but not limited to:

- Responsive design
- Auto save text editor
- Social registration and login. Register with Facebook and Twitter.
- Notification system for replies, @mentions, quotes and likes.
- Improved security

The modern new design was carefully crafted by Audentio Design. We are listening to feedback and will be making ongoing tweaks. Please offer specific comments and questions in the site feedback forum or this article thread.

Now is also a great time to register for our forums. Logged-in users see fewer ads in the forums than guests, and can comment on news stories.

Existing users may have to login again if they haven't since the transition. All users are now allowed an avatar and existing avatars should be updated to the larger size now allowed. There are a small percentage of users who may have to reset their passwords due to the transition. Otherwise, we've migrated all existing accounts and posts into the new system. If you have a problem with your account, contact us through our contact form.

There is a ton of blank empty space around every single thing.

Other than that I'm pretty alright with this.

I think people have some varied definitions of what a "ton" represents.

Register on MacRumors! This sidebar will go away, and you'll see fewer ads.
