Appearance bug

A watched topic is misrepresented as unwatched when the watch is automated as a result of a simple reply (a reply without more options).

Workaround: after replying, reload the page.

Everyone missed my anniversary!

Eight years ago, yesterday.

I wonder … what percentage of readers makes truly effective use of the return to repetitive presentation of metadata beneath every appearance of a person's avatar.

Apparently if you @ tag someone in an edit, they don't get notified.

A fix/enhancement for that will be smart, but FWIW I don't view it as a high priority problem.

In the meantime, the existing notifications are a joy compared to vBulletin.

(With simple notifications – without requiring quote notifications – there should be far less likelihood of quotes being mistreated as off-topic.)

@arn

The Support and General FAQ link both get you to the Zendesk, same page, but once there, you cannot go back to MacRumors via the same nav bar, as it is gone, and the MacRumors logo on the top left does not get you to MacRumors, but to the Zendesk again.

Can this Zendesk tool be incorporated into the general site layout and have the basic and expanded navbar on top? That would bring the whole design one step closer to one package instead of two or three (if one does count the GUIDES)?

Please sir, I'd like some more.

On the FAQ pages under support, the background is bright white with pale blue text. Very hard to read and painful on the eyes.

It would be nice, to change the color of the Zendesk to the same color the forum uses too.

The main page (macrumors.com) uses #ffffff as background color (brightness 100%), the forum uses #fcfcfc as background color (brightness 99%) and the Zendesk uses #ffffff (brightness 100%) as background color again.
As the Zendesk uses a smaller font as the main site and has much less elements to break the white, it seems to be much brighter than the main site.

I don't know how customizable the Zendesk is, but may incorporate colors and elements from the forum to create a more consistent experience and get that white toned down that way.

Oh, apparently I have been awarded a "trophy". No idea what that is all about, but I need to post a message to get it? Right then, here we go... :)
WTF, A Trophy?

Wow, that is nice. One simply has to copy the link of another thread and the Post Reply box automatically sees its title and makes a complete link out of it. And it was so fast, one did not see the work.

I locked a conversation, then replied to the locked conversation.

Locking appears to prevent edition of my own posts in that conversation.

Unlocking the conversation restores the ability to edit posts.

Are those behaviours a feature?

Hi, just wanted to comment. I just returned to this forum after over a year of inactivity literally yesterday and thought to myself, "Hey, when did all these changes occur?" and it turns out about a week or two ago? This must be destiny! I immediately found myself trying to do different things the old school way only to find out so many features are now built it. I am liking this platform a lot so far.

I also wanted to say Thank You to everyone who have been appreciative and "liking" my posts. I was an incredible noob when I started lurking this forum as a guest nearly 5 years ago and later joining. I was a bit of a punk back then, and asked quite a few questions, but got quickly schooled thanks to this wonderful community. It is 4 years later since I have joined, a lot has changed, I am older, wiser, more humble and worlds more experienced than I was and my sole goal is to give back to this community by helping as many people as I can. This community has helped me more than I can express with text.

Expect MUCH activity from me, as I've already set the pace for. I really enjoy being a part of this community and was very excited to see all of the improvements and all of the activity and users still present. I want to give back as much as I can.

Thanks to everyone and awesome job to the heads of MacRumors for implementing all of these solid changes.

moved to a location above the 'Similar Threads' box

A number of things are not logically positioned in relation to that box.

Probably in one of the closed topics, there's a post from me about illogical positioning of the 'Share This Page' box. Keywords maybe: shar* or social

Loss of saved content

… stored on the server and are only retained for a set amount of time. Disabling isn't an option in the default software. …

If it's possible/normal to lose saved drafts in that way, then there should be an answer to a frequently asked question (FAQ) and ideally, that FAQ page should be compiled, or recompiled, before the first complaint about dataloss.

(I sometime draft things for hours, days or weeks before posting.)

Enhancement requests

clutter at the bottom. too much real estate for the 'similar thread' section.

Promoting similarity is very useful feature that can and will become more useful.

Request:
  • the perception of clutter should be reduced by ceasing to emphasise any element in the table of similar topics.
Also, as previously observed (maybe in a locked topic), the current emphasis also causes confusion because it's normal for emphasis to imply (recent and) unread.

… macrumors blue box …

Request:
  • make the footer expandable
collapsed by default, with an unmistakable plain english hint that it can/should be expanded to show essential site information that is generic (neither specific to, nor similar to, what's above).

Observation

barriers to reading

Enlarged avatars. …

Excessive pagination. …

Since I'm without the worst of those barriers, I'm catching up.

To staff: a suggestion

As things are struck through when done in the recent wiki, so some things might be struck through when done in this topic.

Strikethrough markup, plus a concise link to the point of resolution in, for example, the change log.

I don't imagine a retrospective plough through this topic in its entirety (too much of a chore). Just an occasional strike, to make this extraordinarily long topic more easily/quickly digestible by other readers.

Yum. TIA.

Sorry guys... Been using the new forum all week and it's not "better". I love the layout and the fonts. It's really pretty - OS X style but it's not a better forum experience. I find myself wanting to spend less and less time on here because it's harder to read through forums - the primary purpose is the forum. It was nice when the spy feature loaded up an entire page and you could read through it. Now you have to wait and there's too much information to read quickly. It's also more time consuming to get to the different areas. It looks better organized but then it takes a few extra clicks to get to where you want to go.

Here's to hoping more forum friendly changes are in the works. Cheers.

Quick question, and forgive me if it has been asked, I haven't read through each and every post.

Is it possible that images (banners/sigs) will be supported in the signature space any time soon or at all?

Thank you.

If they are allowed, admin might consider hiding them with a type of "spoiler" functionality to avoid being a distraction. Sig content should always be secondary to post content. </opinion->

Are some of you guys using iPhones or iPads to read the forums or something? It really looks more or less the same readability-wise here on Firefox. I have NO IDEA what some of you are whining about constantly.

Unexpected/unwanted change has a high probability of causing stress on almost any platform.
