Apple hoover up just as much data as Google. The difference is it's just anonymous user data for product development rather than ad profiling. One is clearly better than the other but still.

You can't use the internet without something somewhere tracking where you've been. It's been this way since browser cookies and what keeps it largely free at the point of use. It's not exactly ethical but thems the breaks.

And in Google's defence they don't hide their data collection and in return for the devils bargain you do get a whole suite of web apps and services. It's not like they're Meta who take your data and give you nothing constructive in return.
What you are getting in return is more tools, services and methods to collect even more data about you?

While I am not going to disagree with you on Apple’s data collection, I turn those services off. With Google some are easy to turn off while others are just cryptic.

I have GoogleTV and before installing any apps, I turn everything that may attempt to phone home or collect data off. Once apps installed I do the same thing again to make sure something is not added. After that it’s smooth sailing after a minor convenience. If TvOS apps store was not all walled off, I would probably use that.

I bought an iphone 17 pro and just yesterday got my mother a pixel 9. it can do almost anything my iphone does, plus some perks.

I paid 250 bucks for the pixel, and 1350 for the iphone...

I too am considering moving back to android , especially after those subscriptions news

Anything worthwhile on software is going to have a subscription on either side. Trade off the pro level apps from Apple you're going to be paying a subscription to Adobe or others for equivalent level of software.

On a tablet or laptop I get it but do people actually use Adobe etc apps on a phone? I've subscribed to loads of productivity apps over the years but never anything I wanted to use on a phone display. About the only thing from the iPhone I can think of is Halide, but this is motivated by most Android phones baking in manual modes to their camera apps. (It's kind of hilarious Apple still selling a 'Pro' phone that doesn't even have shutter speed control)

iPhone and Android users all use their devices for a broad but largely similar set of uses. Barring hardware features like a Lidar scanner or a folding display there isn't actually as much between them as people (or Apple's marketing) might think.

After 16 years on every (or alternate year) iPhone, I recently took the decision of moving everything to Google Cloud and Google Pixel.

That is awesome. Hope you enjoy it!

The first reason was the painfully slow iCloud sync with files and photos,

Have not experienced that, but I am glad you found something better for you.

the second being the behaviour of the staff at Apple Store, Saket (careless, rude, and undeniably ego-filled). Complained via email to Joz, he replied, but nothing further really happened.

Let us know your experiences at the Google store and/or with Google’s support and its equivalent of AppleCare+. Have not seen any people posting about how great they are, so I am genuinely curious.

The Pixel has a great camera, nice video boost features, and mostly smooth software. The device is quite slow as compared to iPhone, processing power slow, but the AI is crazy nice, and far ahead of others.

Cool. They do have good image processing for their cameras. Personally prefer on device and private AI/data, but everyone has his/her own concerns.

Now I know a lot of my fellow MacRumors readers won't be able to digest someone moving to another mobile operating system, and their comments always make me laugh.

You are right, it will be hard for many Apple Ecosystem users to understand giving that and the related privacy up, but you know what matters most to you, so that is great.

Blindly accepting and praising any brand, no matter how irrational the fan-following is, slows down innovation and lets the others move forward.

Just as is ignoring things for which there is no equivalent on the other side.

PS: I am still using the M5 MacBook Pro, as there is nothing better.

Are those those only two Apple devices and services you had - a MacBook Pro and an iPhone? If so, it is even easier to understand why you switched, as you gain little of the ecosystem benefit with only two devices. Hope you enjoy everything with your new phone.

Start a new Apple calendar event: plus button is at the top of the screen. Start a new reminder: plus button is at the bottom of the screen. Yep, Apple is super consistent.

Yup, that proves it. Apple is super inconsistent.

5 year promise from Apple vs. 7 from Google and Samsung.

Are you working on a 7 year old Google devices? How much fun is it to use? I still use many of my older iPhones for things like Continuity Camera, and they are still very usuable.

That feeling disappeared around 5 years ago. iOS is buggy, lags, eats through battery, and generally performs worse than any Android phone I have tried the last couple years.

Wow. You must be really glad you switched then. I have not experienced these issues, but they sound terrible.

Add the lack of customization and control over the OS where it forces you to do things Apple's way and it is the most user-hostile experience I have had in modern computing.

Got it. Given how terrible Apple’s products are, I am really curious, why are you here? I do not like Android’s interface and am reminded why whenever I have to send a message from the Pixel owning friend’s device. I do not care enough about Google or Android to spend time on an Android or Google forum to say why they suck.

It is the thing that I understand least. In the same way I do not understand the need for people to post on here either: “I just switched to iOS and it is so much better!” Nor: “Steve Jobs gave me my first iPhone and now I am switching.” Why is it so important to people that everyone one here knows their choice?

Also when I cross an international border, it turns off my roaming SIM. Very annoying when I want to use both SIMs all the time.

This is one about which I am really curious, as I have two active eSIMs and my last two weeks have had be in Tokyo. London, Zurich, Brussels, and tomorrow I spend the day in Barcelona, and I have never experienced this. Do you have both eSIMs set to allow roaming? Are your eSIMs from two different countries and companies? Any other information you can share about this behavior?

I also like Android for free premium YouTube because it's not worth paying for.

Nice.

Apple does most of the heavy lifting for that one, not trusting its users to use a computing device like a computer. When I can remove Chess from a Mac and install my own icons and themes on an iPhone, I will reconsider Apple.

Neither have anything to do with “trusting users”. For my phone and my primary portable device (my M5 iPad Pro), I prefer devices that just work and make it easy for me with pick up anyone’s device and just use it.

However, to make it clear, if that is the price of having you as an Apple user, I hope deeply that you never return, as I have found those things have tons of unintended consequences.

I am glad you have found systems you like better. Wonder what makes you spend so much time telling Apple users about all the things you like better.

Nice.
When I cross a border and the phone detects one of the lines is not roaming, it will turn off the roaming line. It's very annoying because I use both lines all the time. Two lines from two different countries.

If you are a tourist and only have a home country SIM plus roaming SIMs, you won't have any problems. For example, if you use a home carrier plus a roaming SIM, the roaming line won't turn off until you return to the home country.

Here is a thread about this issue,

Um, isn't the name of this sub-forum "Alternatives to iOS"? One would think then that "all the things" are valid?
I did not question in which forum you posted, but why you spend so much energy telling about people who use a system you do not like why it is inferior. As I said, I have zero interest in going to An Android forum to explain why I like iOS better. Not even on my radar.

I will have to play with them a bit. I have several eSIMs on my device, and have had a mix of local and roaming eSIMs active as I moved around, but have not experienced this. I will try to make it happen. Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah I did that a long time ago. I did it when I switched to Android after the iPhone 4. I went to a Samsung galaxy S2. I do go back and forth and right now own an iPhone 16 pro and a Samsung galaxy S25 ultra which I prefer. It’s easy to move between if using third party. I also have a windows laptop, MacBook and an iPad. It’s good to do even if you have an iPhone and even all Apple devices. God forbid something happens with apples servers or if somehow they close and no longer exist.

I love your genuine, unbiased, detailed reply. I genuinely appreciate it. I also had an iPad Pro M4, an iPad mini and an Apple Watch Ultra 2, but I found use for them amongst my family members.

There should always be some preference for systems, don't get angry about it !

Google's smartphone doesn't even appear in the rankings despite the money spent on advertising. The important thing is to feel comfortable with what you use. Mac and iPhone users don't need convincing of anything.

But...but...you are in the "Alternatives to iOS" which means Android. You are spending a lot of energy telling people how much you do not like Android......just sayin......

Now lets look at global smartphone sales........
No doubt the iphone is the top selling smartphone individual model.
But most companies sell more than one model of smartphone.

You are 100% correct. No one needs any convincing on what to use. Just use what works best for you and for me it is Android even though I own a Mac, iPhone and iPad's.

Would definitely consider moving to Samsung S26 Ultra. I love my Watch Ultra which is why I stay on iPhone. I have been considering moving back to an automatic analog watch, and if so would probably switch to S26U.

With that said, I really love the seamless integration of Apple's ecosystem and I have no confidence moving to Android would be as easy. I'll likely stay in the walled garden.

In my opinion Android has more beautiful apps and better designed. For example WhatsApp is way more beautiful on Android than on the iOS and so are some other apps.
There are other free apps that can read PDF apps and on Samsung you can even edit those + it has way more features than iOS. You can even lock any folder and file you want with a passcode and change the folder icon and name and make it have a different passcode.
Batteries are no doubt better on most Android phones. My iPhone 5s, iPhone 7, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 14 last less than any Android phones I've had.
Instagram eats a lot of battery on iOS too.I'm considering switching back too and on Linux as well. Samsung also has a better password manager than Apple + in my country there are Samsung TVs everywhere in hotels etc and you can only stream via Samsung phones.

You can also turn your Android phone into a usable PC. You just need a monitor, display and keyboard.
Huawei also has pretty cool features.

There are so many Android manufacturers and they all have apps pre-installed too.
