The Choose-A-Vista one is pretty dishonest. Only 1 version of OSX?
Seems there are 3 different versions of OSX you can buy from Apple.

Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger (regular edition)
Mac OS X Server v10.4 (10-client license)
Mac OS X Server v10.4 (Unlimited-client license)

Actually, the Server and standalone versions of OS X are two different products.

What the commercial is talking about is that MS has several different versions of the standalone version of Vista, where Apple has one.

God only knows how many different Server versions of Vista there really is. Again Apple only has two versions of OS X Server and the only difference between the two is the license. That's a huge difference.

Have you looked at the back of a Vista package (if not I recommend that you do), it's pretty confusing at a first glance. The fact that they have a chart with the different versions right on the package is a bad sign. The only product in recent years that's worst in my opinion is Adobe's CS3, now that is a horror show.

That still contradicts the 'only 1 version of OS X'. Standalone? Then why does that wheel include Vista Starter and Enterprise ?

No, there is only one version of OS X.

Because both Vista Starter and Enterprise are stand alone products and it makes the wheel look better, duh. It's a commercial.

Fact: when a person upgrades OS X on a stand alone machine, they only have one choice.

Fact:when a person upgrades to Vista on a stand alone machine there are 6 different versions (not counting the Limited Numbered Signature Edition signed by Bill Gates edition of Ultimate - I kid you not there are 20,000 copies floating round).

Is there even a "Vista Server" version? Or does Microsoft have an entire line of server products of a different stripe for that?

In Vista's defense, it may be selling fewer copies than hoped, but it is compelled to be installed on most new PC's, and the millions that have purchased Vista are no "small potatoes".

It is factually true the OSX buying decision is simpler. As a consumer you either have it or you don't and if somehow you need to reinstall, there is no copy protection or mandatory registration process, not even to receive software updates.

As for the massive versions of Vista and CS3, I think it is the intention of a well-paid marketing department to increase confusion and discomfort so people buy one or more price points above their technical need to avoid the "risk of making a mistake". Seriously.

It's called "Longhorn" and scheduled to release at the end 2007/beginning 2008. First beta was seeded among developers a couple of weeks ago. There are rumors that commercial name for this will be "Windows Server 2007". It'll be a successor of current 'Server 2003"

About the "knocking" ad... what exactly happened?
That's was the point:

Something that was supposed to work in Vista didn't (unexpected roadblock, "this is supposed to work but it doesn't, for no apparent reason") And then suddenly it unexpectedly works, but with not with the results you were expecting.

Message: Vista is unpredictable, unreliable.

Yes the ad was a bit surreal, but then again, so is Vista in action.

These ads ARE starting to get annoying. How about Apple focus on their product for once instead of slamming MS.

right now there is no new product. so there is your problem.

I DID laugh at the Vista ad. However, afterward I realized they included on that list of Vista versions the "Starter" version which is only available in the developing world (not the US and Europe). And as this ad is only going to be played in the US and (maybe Canada?), it seems a bit silly. I worry it's even offensive to go after them for having an affordable version of the OS for the developing world.

probably when they created the ad, the developer version was still there.

How many versions will it come in?
I suppose it'll be simmilar to current status:
Standard - small-to mid buisnesses
Eneterpirse - for mid-to-large buiznesses
DataCenter - for large high-loaded databases
WebServer - mainly designed as webserver

Besides of it there'll be one-two cheap versions for developers and very small businesses.

These aren't Mac commercials anymore. They are a Vista attack campaign. If you are going to beat the competition, you have to give it a little respect. Even professional athletes get this.

AFAIK even people who are pro-Microsoft are knocking Vista and telling people to keep using XP, so Apple is just going with the flow here, IMHO.

Choose a Vista was funny, although I never thought I'd say this: The "Get A Mac" ads are starting to become a little thin to me, in the same way that the dancing silhouette iPod ads feel three years out of date. Maybe it's time to "Get A New Ad Campaign"?

Same thing happened when Win2k came out. The recommended thing was to stick to Win98SE and wait. Many games at the time would not run under Win2k and I think that will be a big thing in the home market for Vista. When the games run and are stable on it, the take up will increase.

You mean like every other company out there? For example, Microsoft?

"The Wow Starts Now!"

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Utterly forgettable, rather cheesy and trotting out a message that everyone's heard before.

The Mac adverts are creative, humorous, simple, joined up, timeless, aggressive, memorable, effective, cheap to produce and widely talked about.

You don't need to crap on your competition to make a good ad. I never saw MS put out ads about 10.0 when it came out and good god did that suck butt. Slander ads are like political ads. After a while NORMAL people get tired of them. Only Macheads enjoy this crap longterm. The ads simply reinforce the notion that Mac users are a bunch of elitist snobs. I'm sick of this stereotype. Its got to stop. As I said before; Apple's crap smells no better then anyone else's

The funny thing is "PC" is the star of the ads. They are about his troubles and adventures and Mac just sits there making snide comments. Shrugging excessively does not change the fact that he's not being very nice. That's why the "genius" one was good, because the roles were reversed.

Well said.
And why is Mac using adults?

The only way that MACs are going to change the world in terms of market share is to get kids and teens and new grads buying them.

Put two teenage girls in the commercial, one with a White Macbook and the other with a Dell. Show them dowloading songs, video chatting, exporting photos onto MySpace, surfing the internet, connecting an ipod, using the iphone...

Get a Marketing grip, Apple!!!

Do you people always complaining about these ads realize that worldwide advertising campaigns are very expensive? So expensive that nothing is aired without thorough market research and testing. Every detail is constantly examined and re-examined before and during every run of every version in every country.

Like them or not, these aren't just some random concepts slapped together. Apple will continue to run these as long as they are effective.

You only have a couple choices other than whining... boycott Apple products and/or write a letter to Steve Jobs.

And what? Show how utterly difficult it is to do everything on the PC? Something smells of lame infomercial over-acting, like showing IMPOSSIBLE it is to use a regular cheese grater over Ron Popiel's model... "Oh, what a mess! And clean-up is a DISASTER!"

Im gonna have to nod for the Genius ad, that was funny....even though we all know the real geniuses aren't that smart. Second nod would be for Choose a Vista but the last one only made me chuckle slightly

A good ad is a good ad regardless of the message. They're good ads - people who don't like them say they're poor because they put down the competition. Ads that put down the competition are not automatically bad ads.

I see lots of posts knocking the ads, about how long in the tooth they are, boring, old, repetitive, ect...

In the past Apple would dazzle with one ad that would air for just a little while, after you had seen it a few times you turn the channel. Then wait five years for the next ad.

I'm glad Apple is making many, many low-budget ads for a long term campaign. This is the longest co-ordinated marketing campaign for Apple computers that I can remember.

Not sure what you were using back when OS X 10.0 came out, but it was much better than OS 9 and light years ahead both Windows 2000 and Windows NT, and Linux was a complete joke back then.

But it's just a commercial, however it's not slander if it's true. Normal people are actually entertained by these ads.

Forgive the back to back posts.

But who do you think are buying all of the MacBooks. Apple is capturing that market from Dell.
