Supply Chain

I find it hard to believe that nobody here has not got a contact in any of the Apple supply chains. Are ivy bridge being bought from Intel instead of sandy bridge, are nvidea now supplying GPU, are Foxcon making a new mb. Presumably nobody in China reads these forums to comment on current assembly?
Come on folks do some digging.
I'm waiting to get my first imac and make the leap of faith from PC--can't wait forever though!

I would be really surprised if we don't see the 2012 iMac released with ML. They have the new chip now, just have to add in a bigger HD, USB 3.0.....can't see why they need any more time to put out a new iMac, the time is very ripe in my opinion.

I know that sounds logical, but it may not happen for various reasons, such as:
  • Apple's phasing out the iMac
  • A major redesign is in the works
  • Problems with supplies of some parts
I hope that none of these are true and that we'll see an updated iMac right after ML with little fanfare from Apple. But it that's going to happen, I'd expect to see the new model show up on one inventory list or another in the next few days.

Well ML release is close, but i fear we will not see any new desktop there,
its a strange situation, you can say its because of greed (clearing 2011 stocks?..or else),you can say its because of faulty decision such the Epeat one and its back pedal, you can say its because of chain problems-mistakes,
all i can say its that i wont buy a Usb2 computer from 2011, so i suppose i'll wait till its out ,2012 or 2013, but doing this Apple is losing my money now and i don't know if i will be able to buy it for that period, its a sin.

2012 iMac

no imacs or minis the 24th says 9to5mac. THIS IS SO EFFIN UPSETTING!!

"This year, Mountain Lion isn’t being launched alongside hardware (last year was new Minis and Airs launched with Lion) so there is less setup required and accordingly, we’re hearing that the overnights will be smaller. One employee tells us that it is basically just a few guys running around with the master image installing it on every Mac. Notably, some stores we’ve spoken to haven’t heard of any overnight…yet."

http://9to5mac.com/2012/07/15/apple...c-MacAllDay+(9+to+5+Mac+-+Apple+Intelligence)

Do you really think an Apple employee is going to tell you the truth about an immanent hardware release? Besides, how many guys do you think it takes to carry iMac's from the truck into the store? Do not believe a word you hear from a so called "employee". At this point we have heard nothing to rule out an immanent iMac release....and a lot of reasons for an immanent iMac release.

yeah true that... i know apple employee dont really know jack S. but at the same time 9to5mac has been really reliable and they said there wont be any hardware with ML so idk what to believe anymore i really REALLY hope is not true though im in need of an imac and paying for 2011 machine is not gonna cut it and i dont want refurb stuff because i need a bto imac. Im sort of upset. lol

You and everyone else my friend. I've decided that October I'm drawing the line. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that the imacs were coming with the release of ML, but all the rumors we've been hearing recently, now that doesn't seem as likely...

I'm still running my 2007 Macbook Pro and its on its last legs. I'll hold out until October, but if they aren't here by then, then we aren't going to see them in 2012 and i just can't wait longer than that.

It was 9to5 that first told us that a leaked parts list for WWDC included iMacs. A couple days later they changed their mind. Keep your salt shaker handy.

it is also 9to5 mac that is going out their way to prove that a new imac isnt coming look a this

I used to have 9to5 as my home page, I have recently switched to VR-Zone instead.

yeah starting to think that they are just like apple and just care about the mobile side of things. instead of them going out of their way to prove imacs are not coming they should go out their way to figure out whats really going on with them ask their sources and such

I am as frustrated as the next guy, but look at it from Apple's point of view. Putting new components on an old infrastructure got them zero credit with the mac pro community. Also, given the ivy bridge processor offers minimal processing power advantage and the new GPUs have only really started rolling out, Apple is not late with their new iMac. To boot, the rMBP has taken everyone by surprise how well it's selling which means a significant bottle neck in the supply chain of the SSDs. We know Apple likes to have a certain amount of inventory built to start a roll-out initially. So the way I see it, the most optimistic outcome is 25th July. But given lack of any 'visible' or clear-cut signs, I am losing hope (despite voting for 25th July way back on 11th June). From the way things are looking Apple will be doing well to have something out in late August or September to allow some students to take advantage of the back to school offer. I can't see a launch in October (iPhone and possibly iPad mini) and November is too close to holiday season (and the demands on people's wallets that entails) and Black Friday so the most probable window (to me) has shifted to 15 Aug-15 Sept

Why do people think October????

What's different to March, May, June and July?

No way will it be the same month as the iPhone release.

People think October because of the DigiTimes FUD article that came out a few weeks back. It's complete bologna. The month of October now belongs to one product and one product alone at Apple: the iPhone. Last year I think we got a MBP spec bump on like October 29th or something, but the MBP had already gotten its big refresh of 2011 in February with Sandy Bridge, so it was a silent bump. A new CPU class doesn't fall through the cracks like that -- not after 400+ days of silence.

August and September are at least plausible, though there are no events on Apple's release schedule that appear attractive enough to forgo the sales draw that comes from a simultaneous launch with ML. The probability of an Aug/Sep launch INSTEAD OF a July launch therefore seems low enough to dismiss. They won't launch anything in November or December, because Apple doesn't refresh computers during the Christmas shopping season. That leads us into 2013, as hinted in the original Tim Cook email from last month. Once I would have told you there's no way Apple would go a year and a half plus between iMac releases, that there's no way they could be that stupid -- but, here we are.

Honestly, looking at the calendar and injecting no wishful thinking, the picture appears much more bleak. If we don't see the iMac on 7/25, I am not entirely certain it will be updated again. It will be discontinued or just die the long death of the iPod Classic. I speculate this because by 2013, the need matrix that the iMac meets (asApple sees it) may be covered in overlap by a redesigned Mac Pro (which at least the long-suffering Pro users now know for a fact is coming) and the Mac Mini plus a TB display. Never mind that mobile CPU and GPU have inherent limits. Apple doesn't give a toss. You'll buy what you're given. (shakes head)

Hoping for next week. Because if that doesn't happen, then... well, nothing. That's what. And what a letdown that will be.

You were doing very well until this point! I agree with you it won't be October and it won't be November (cf. Black Friday & Christmas shopping in general) or December. But the iMac is still an important product and I think if the delays in GPUs and/or SSD shortages have delayed the possible refresh from 7/25, then I think Apple will find a way to bring this out before the end of Back to school on 9/19

It's interesting that 7/24 has drifted from close to 67% to 60% in this poll. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1384568/

But, correct me if I´m wrong. If the 27" iMac is Discontinued for stores, meaning they can´t order new or won´t order in new. Doesn´t this mean the current models is being phased out. Which means sooner than later there´s has to be new models out? Maybe not with ML but for sure not October or later. Apple can´t have the 27" model discontinued or unavailable over a long period??
Please explain to me how this works, for me this seems like a certain prrof of an imminent update. ANd we have read multiple times that the stock is drying as well... How many places have discontinued the imac of some models by now ? -I´m curious if someone has some info here ?

I don't get these iMac is to "die a death" lines?

This is the flagship desktop. (not in terms of performance, but market share) I don't see the logic yet of killing it off, the Mini and the Pro going first would be more likely, when either of that happens then I know not to pay for any new Mac software.

OSX ML is just that OSX it is not yet iOS (only saying not yet)
I find it tremendously odd that Apple will launch their new Computer operating system with all this old tech to show and run it on?

"...look at this fabulous new software and all that it can do, but it is only on for that new 15" screen... enjoy"

****
thought after posting.

Maybe there is a logic to consolidate all MAC desktops in a stand alone box that is powerful and compact, a Mini/Pro crossover mid size unit with access and upgradeable parts - that will hook up to the TB display of the present/future, thereby taking the step to phase out the desktop line over the next 7-12 years.

Those of us that need to work on screen statically with processing will be able to do so on the and those of us who want to make the mobile transition will be able to use the TB display in a similar way with laptops (much as is the case right now).
This scenario I guess would render the iMac useless.

If I were to guess, I'd say that the SSDs they'd use for iMacs would have almost nothing in common with those for the rMBPs.. they'd be properly enclosed internal drives, not memory-stick-like custom inserts. They could even be different / multiple suppliers.

The iMac is not being phased out. The parnoia about Apple going mobile is unwarranted. When the MBP benchmarks leaked on geekbench there were iMac benchmarks too. The MBP scores turned out to be legitimate so the 2012 iMacs exist. When they will be released is anybody's guess.

Just hopped out of my time machine...How could we all have been so blind? Obviously Apple wouldn't release their brand new OS on old tech. I arrived on July 25th, 10:17 a.m. and the world was awesomely changed! :)

Thank God!! For a minute there I got nervous :). This does make alot of sense tho. I feel like Apple releasing a new OS on old hardware could only make them look foolish. Lord knows they already look foolish, but although we haven't heard naything about it yet, I still have my fingers crossed for next week...

the bottom line is that apple doesnt give a flying foock about what we think like i said before i wouldnt be surprise if apple doesnt release til october and just be a spec bump. i dont know what think anymore.. it make sense to update on july its seems that apple doesnt work in a logical way.

It must be terrible going through life thinking that every negative thing that happens is a personal affront to you, and obviously the responsible party is going out of their way to make your life miserable and so you start thinking what other things they can do to you to make it worse.

Personally I came to the realization many years ago that, sometimes, shtuff just happens. Often it's nobody's fault, but even if it was, they weren't out to get me. They just made a mistake, or missed a deadline, or didn't accomplish what I wanted them to accomplish. Oh well. Life goes on.

I agree on paranoia bit but have you seen 9th5 tweet regarding alleged geekbench of alleged refreshed iMac?

Can you post the link to the geekbench score from that tweet? Something I can click on since I am on the phone. I don't do twitter.
