More, more goodness!

What are your impressions?

Love it.
Worth buying.
Surprised by gaming performance.
Rosetta gets the job done pretty well.
It's as seamless as the 68K to PPC transition in my opinion (well, it was smooth for me).

Got It!

Mine arived today. It's transfering files from my G5 now. Another 56 minutes to go! Can't wait! :D

Aren't the New Intel Versions suppose to have a different start-up chime?

For the brief second that I turned mine on before it went back in the box, it sounded like the same Start up Sound as my G4 PowerBook

Just ordered:

20" iMac Core Duo with 256MB of video memory and wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I'll purchase more memory from OWC once they get some in stock. I also picked up a all-in-one printer (free after rebates) and Office 2004 Student/Teacher Edition ($50 off after rebate).

Let's see some more videos. The best part of a mac is it just works and we do not have to reboot. :D

Nah, there's something wrong with the iMac G5 in that video. I had an iMac G5 and it booted way quicker than that one. I'm not saying the Intel one isn't faster than a good G5 I'm just saying that there was something wrong with that one booting up.

I'm sure existing iMac G5 owners can testify it doesn't take that long to boot a G5.

I've rebooted a iMac G5 at the Apple store and it's taken about that long. I asked the Apple Store employees and they said it's normal.

This is waaayy too long to boot... my Mini boots faster than the iMac G5 in that video... something isn't right somewhere ...

However... I have noticed that when I apply some updates to OSX on my Mini it takes significantly more time to boot than usual on the next boot, subsequent boots are faster and "normal" to me. So, if these two machines were taken "out of the box" as the video seems to imply I think we have three options:

- Apple applies OSX differently on them at first, or
- The Intel iMac is really f*ing fast, or
- Something is definitely wrong with the G5 in that video.

Overall, the Intel iMac seems very impressive and appealing, but I will wait for now I think ...

Overall, the machine runs completely well and smoothly compared to my iMac G4. Everything is responsive. Safari feels like IE on a PC now. It's fast and smooth.

Halo and Rainbow Six surprised me. Looks like games could run decently without being Intel-optimized, although upon checking the Get Info on both apps, Halo does not have a PowerPC or Universal tag in parentheses after its name, but Rainbow Six says "Rainbow Six (PowerPC)." Odd...

Anyhow, graphics-intesive apps seem to be no problem, although Intel-ready apps will probably make these games fly!

Emulators need some Intel-ready binaries. SNES9X and Mupen are my playable emulators. I'll be waiting for updates, RB! :)

H.264 is not supported by the Radeon X1600's hardware just yet. Apple will probably have drivers ready. Until then, H.264 will stay a processor task and intensive.

Love my iMac. :)

If you have any special requests, post away.

So many questions...

So both Halo and Rainbow Six you installed were G4 apps? As a percentage of their speed on your previous platform, how would you rate them on the Intel iMac? Lastly, what was your previous processor that you're comparing them to?

(I have a copy of Star Wars Lego that I hope will run OK on an Intel iMac.)

Thanks in advance!

I'm not too sure about the iMac G5, but the Intel model's bootup time was fast! Thanks for the video, man. If it's not too much trouble, more comparison videos would be great, especially when launching Photoshop.

:D
