imagine you have 1 million people downloading 7GB of data from apples servers within a week. You're talking about 7 petabytes being uploaded by the apple servers.

this is why they press dvd's.

Within the last week or so Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 hit Technet. Plenty of strain on the main servers, but the Top Downloads akamai links handled it with aplomb. It can be done.

What is it with you people and everything going digital and to the net? Whats worng with physical media? An OS is only good on physical media (that includes USB flash drives)

maybe the USB flash drives are the future OS install DVD

We have not arrived at widespread network install yet. Not only is an upload of that size and time concentration beyond the capacity of most commercial servers at issue right now, we have the more important aspect that the predominant portion of data flow is still done by "sneakernet".

I give DVD's another 3-4 years of predominance. After that there will still be a very significant minority of folks with bandwidth crippled network connections.

Rocketman

Exactly. People need to get the "internet downloading" crap out of their heads. Physical media is staying. Don't like it, fine, but there are others in the world besides you.

Is Apple really still using the pre-1990 orthography? For the "most advanced operating system" you'd think it would have said:

O sistema operativo mais avançado do mundo. Perfeitamente otimizado.

I dunno how it works for Apple Portugal, but I would think now that Portugal has switched over to the modern spelling that Apple would follow it. That makes me inclined to think fake.

On Apple's websites for Portugal and Brasil, a different slogan is used which does not use that word at all.

Apple Portugal http://www.apple.com/pt/macosx/ :

«O sistema operativo mais avançado do mundo. Aperfeiçoado.»

Apple Brasil http://www.apple.com/br/macosx/ :

«O sistema operacional mais avançado do mundo. Elegantemente aperfeiçoado.»

I believe that apple will change the box design to something different from what is currently found on apple.com . However, I do not believe that this box/disc design was created by Apple and the fact that an incorrect slogan is used is proof.

By the way, I apologise if this was already posted somewhere between the post I'm responding to and the end of the thread so far.

Seriously who cares? It's a box and a disc, wow.

Don't flame me or just say that I have a pc becasue I don't. I have a macbook and that's it. But seriously, some of the **** that people orgasm over on here is just the reason people with pc's hate us.

Keep in mine i love both microsoft and apple, but I find it funny that the apple side has the more drama. Its very entertaining.

Exactly. odds are that you'll look at the box/art just once when you install it. I actually kind of like it. Sets itself apart from the whole Leopard branding. I'm thinking that Leopard will still be sold for awhile & this helps makes a visual difference in the packaging. Just an idea/ opinion

As do I, but lets first get our bandwidth infrastructure in the US (where Apple is located) to the point that we can actually download those files within a reasonable time frame (with QOS) and ensure that Apple's servers don't choke on millions of customers hitting their servers. Until that happens, disc distribution is gong to stay cheaper and a more reasonable method of large distribution.

There is a reason that HD video content is largely sold on Disc, its just not feasible to pipe it to everybody. The US infrastructure is pitifully bad with the monopolies controlling things as it stands..

You can create a system where you buy the rights to download the file in a certain time frame, creating something like a queue...

I don't think that is a very fair system since internet speeds are not equal on a per person basis. It wouldn't be worth the costs. End of story.

So... any news? is this 10A432 the real deal? what about that 10A435 they mentioned?

Who mentioned 10A435? one person who saw a tweet off twitter - and the original person who made the tweet has deleted it already. If you believe that rumour, you might as well state you don't believe someone landed on the moon and 9/11 was an insider job.

RE: iBug2

Who said anything about an official leak? I am talking acces in GENERAL.

Btw mate - stop harping back to leopard; no one cares what you think about the Leopard release cycle; this is a new product, different requirements, different aims - and a different test and release cycle.

I'm just saying, as an ADC member, that I don't believe, even one bit, that 432 is GM. And stop talking like an idiot. It's not about what I think about Leopard seed cycle. It's something every ADC member knows, not my opinion, that Apple did not release the GM until the stores opened.

It's a new product, well kind of, and Apple absolutely does not need to seed the GM before the product ships, like any other OS release they had so far. Every seed for the last couple of months is practically the same as the GM. If your app works on those, it'll work on the GM.

The Amazon removal of the pink space box and blue for the server version makes me think this is real.
The bar code too.
My Leopard disc number is 2Z691-6037-A.

iLife '09 is 6328, iWork '09 Trial is 6325, this Snow Leopard says 6428.
Who has iWork '09 retail could check what number is displayed on the disk.

The latest Apple software released should be close to number 6428...

:D

The disk number is 6388 (iWork version 9.0.1)

I've jumped on Twitter and the person who started the rumour has since deleted his tweet; John Gruber. All of this the result of probably a typo and a few people thinking that because there are some bugs in 10A432, the whole shipment is going to be delayed. Combined the two and you get a conspiracy being created about 10A435 being shipped.

Even *IF* there was a 10A435, it would have leaked by this time, at least some details or the confirmation of its existence. I just don't see even a small group of people receiving a copy or an organisation receiving a copy without at least one (or more) person(s) leaking details or the code.

Ahh, the General Public at large.

They could easily ship a newer build on the DVD without informing anyone in advance. They have done it before (Tiger/Leopard), so why wouldn't they do it again?

Unless the build has appeared on ADC there is nothing to leak or confirm, unless Apple employees would like to lose their job. One Apple employee a close friend of mine spoke with couldn't deny or approve if the latest seed is in fact the GM.

Some circumstantial evidence that 10A432 might be the GM may be the fact that Apple legal asked Demonoid to take the leaked build offline. They've asked CrunchGear to take their preview of 10A432 offline as well, which they haven't done so far.

If Snow Leopard would go on sale by August 28th, we probably would've seen a press release from Apple by now, given the fact they've announced Leopard's release date 10 days before.

I'm not sure how many of you are actually using 10A432. If you are then you will notice:

1 - Some languages have not been added to this build yet.

2 - Other languages like French are not complete.

3 - QTX has NO PREFERENCES. You cant even auto play a .mov file.

4 - The intro video is still that of Leopard.

5 - Install does not default into 64bit installations on 64bit compatible machines.

6 - This build is less stable than the previous build 10A421. I have been using it for a week now. I get more spinning beach-balls, system freezes, and more KP than I did with 10A421.

The fact is that Snow Leopard build 10A432 is not finished, or stable enough
to be GM.

While points 1-4 are valid observations for believing 10A432 is not the finished article (stating the bleedin' obvious), none of these would require a recompilation of the source code to rectify. Point 5, as others have stated, is just where Apple happens to be at the moment with regard to 64 bit drivers for the most important consumer peripherals. As for point 6, it sounds like Tiger and Leopard all over again. Early adopters put up with these inconveniences. For the rest, release 10.6.2 will be the real GM.

But there were strong rumours before the release; I remember downloading the final build off a private torrent from an employee at a store who had received their consignment of Mac OS X cds - before it had officially gone on sale.

So even before the 'official release' there was strong inklings of a new build - the only evidence so far is a tweet on twitter that is suddenly deleted.

True, but thats never stopped a leak before.

True, but they have asked for prototypes to be pulled down; they've even told websites to take down information about unreleased, non-final products as well.

August 28 was given but I question the date as well, I don't seem them doing an early release - although the problem if they release it close to the media event then the Mac OS X Snow Leopard release might either over shadow the event the event might overshadow the Snow Leopard launch.

The problem with 1-4 is he gives no specifics - what languages are missing? what examples of parts not fully translated? does he realise that QuickTime X is slimmed down and simplified with editing being moved in a purpose built application? too many questions, many pages have gone and he hasn't answered those questions the first time I asked them.

I'm not talking about 435. I'd assume the GM would be around 10 higher than 432 since Apple has around 1 more month for finishing development. If they ship SL at the end of September two weeks is more than enough for distribution time.

I hope that is the case - I know if I remove all languages from the System Preferences -> Language and Text; I only have British English, if I try to search with spotlight from the drop down search - all the results come back in Japanese. If I add 'English' so that British English is at the top then followed by 'English', I get the results back in English but when it comes to spell checking in Safari, I get US spellings.

Its not the end of the world but I hope that 10A432 isn't the Golden Master given that it is a bone head bug.

I wonder if it'll be 10A445 :) maybe we should do a sweep stake :p
