Samsung's strategy in mobile electronics can be summed up in three ways:

1) Try and see what Apple has in the pipeline and get it out before they do

2) Introduce 50 different size variations of basically the same thing and see which sticks

3) Develop gimmicky software features to distinguish products from the other me-too products in the market

Wow ... brilliant analysis :D

am i the only one who doesn't see why one would need a bigger screen? the regular iPad is more than enough for most apps, unless it was able to multitask i don't see the purpose.

I'm with you ...
I'm not a fan of the rumored "iPad Pro" and this product from Samsung is just useless for my needs as well.

There is some value in Apple leaking false information and putting teams on bogus projects. There is also value in leaking parts photos through the supply chain. I wish Apple would actively participate in obfuscation and misdirection of its competitors.

I would love for Samsung to introduce an Android thigh master...

Apple should intentionally "leak" a rumor that they are working on a Digital Social Media Refrigerator With Facebook Integration.

And the knee-jerk reaction from Samsung would be: "WHAT!! Apple is working on hi-tech refrigerator with integrated Facebook functionality!? This must not go unchallenged! We are Samsung! We sell refrigerators! We know more about refrigerators than them! How dare they! Engineers, start your engines! You have a deadline, you must build our Social Media Refrigerator and must release it by this summer! It can keep your food cold, and Tweet with lightning fast ability! The world will be stunned by this marvel of innovation! Make this happen quickly!"

Why is it pathetic? Did Samsung just design and begin manufacturing these tablets since the Apple rumor surfaced a few days ago? Is that what people really think?

A few days ago,really?

The first mention of an iPad Pro I've seen was from MacRumors on November 19, 2013. I doubt Samsung could have made their own in about a month and produced it in numbers.

Amazing if they based it on this site and manufactured a 12" tablet in less than a week! And coming out with a watch at least a year before if/when Apple does. Samsung must be able to see into the future.

And you must be able to google before jumping to conclusions.

I'm not so sure. The larger iPad rumours have been around for maybe 6 months max. I don't know but I suspect it takes a lot longer than 6 months to design and engineer a 12" tablet with a new UI.

This new tablet is almost identical in hardware to the 10" pad, not much designing necessary here. Since they already have so many sizes out, it seems very plausible that they have some sort of basic barebone design that can be easily resized.
The software is only slightly modified in the end. No revolutionary "pro" features whatsoever that could benefit from the larger screen. I'm pretty sure they've had plans to support several apps on a split screen for a while. After all, Microsoft has had it for ages.

While is seems possible that Samsung would've released something like this anyway, it seems more likely to me that they tried to cash in on the ongoing iPad Pro rumors and pushed something out the door that might have never seen the light of day otherwise. The whole thing looks rushed and unfinished. Where are the "pro" features for the "pro" name?

Reminds me a lot of the Samsung Gear, which was almost certainly rushed and released as an unfinished product based on Apple rumors. Or those speech recognition and motion control "features" in their TVs a while ago a few months after all those persistent "Apple TV will revolutionize the UI" rumors. Same thing.

You are also allowed to show 2. Or 3. At least in a decently designed windowing system.

I understand, but my point is that as Android tablets begin to imitate the functionality of laptops, the less necessary they are. If you care about running that many apps at one time, why would you buy an Android tablet when you can either get a decent touch-enabled Windows laptop or Windows 8.1 tablet that can run full-blown Windows?

Considering people have been making 20+" tablets, and well...all kinds of sizes of tablets, there's no proof or indication that Samsung did this solely on the basis of the iPad Pro rumor.

So now they are getting obsolete because they are too competent and good? It's better to make dumber tablets?

Since the comment I responded to was about Samsung, I didn't bring up Windows tablets. The Samsung tablet multitasks, Apple tablets currently do not. So Samsung didn't copy Apple.

What is your point?
People are saying that Samsung copies Apple, not that all that Samsung does comes from there.
There's a big difference.

For instance they sure as hell didn't copy that useless "no touch" feature for the Galaxy S4 from Apple. Or that stupid, non-functional eye-tracking. And so many other things they just throw on the wall.

I'm gonna, once again, go on record stating that this is the stupidest argument Macrumors has ever generated.

What is Samsung copying here? A size? So if they went 11 inches, or 13 inches, but not 12 inches, they would've been alright? But because they did go with 12 inches because Apple may or may not be releasing their own 12 inch device, they're completely ripping them off?

So why is it that when Asus released the Nexus 7, then Apple released the smaller iPad Mini, you all weren't here making the same argument in Asus' favor? That since they found a bit of success in the smaller tablet market, Apple followed suit? Oh, wait. The Mini was 7.9 inches, not 7 inches. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SCENARIO!

Jesus. Do you people not feel shame for saying some of the things you do?

No, Samsung is just trying to saturate the market with tablets from 32" to 3" ....

samsung tablets

Well, its another new year and AGAIN Samsung has beaten Apple to the punch. Apple will continue to sit on its collective asses and wait for some future launch date for its products. By then the world will have already released their products and anything Apple has to show will be so "last year" and "ho hum".

So in your world - there's no possibility that Samsung could have been researching and working on things like watches, tvs with different features, etc and just released them when they wanted. In your world - their entire business model is based on Apple.

Is that right?

I was hoping for more. Samsung needs to simplify their ui overlay--but I cant even begin to decode what the ui is doing in this video. Releasing note and tab pro versions is confusing. I was planning on buying this--but it looks like a pass.

A window tab in this form factor with a wacom pen would be cool

Verge review is typical of tech press: totally clueless. Of course a 12" tablet is going to be to large to hold in one hand. Its clearly made for use on table of lap

So, if I understand, if it is not copied from Apple it is useless and crap, if it is useful is just because they have copied Apple, even if Apple doesn't have that product and it is just a silly rumor.

And do you call other's arguments silly? I really hope you're just joking and that people like you don't believe that total nonsense

I'm just glad Apple doesn't throw anything at the wall

(cough) ping
(cough) mobileme

...and so on.

Please - useful or not - you never really know what hot tech might just take off. There's always going to be guesswork.

I know plenty of people who swore ping would be the death of some social networks. Clearly it wasn't.

All companies have hits and misses - both in products and features.

Non-functional? It works very well on my Note 8 tablet, something I wish my 5S had.

I absolutely agreed - I myself would prefer the current crop of Win 8.1 tablets to Android ones for several reasons (compatibility with drawing apps where I do need Wacom (e.g., InkSpace, Photoshop etc.); future software updates).

lol I'm annoyed by all the stupid Apple fans...first they complain about Samsung copying Apple, making smart phones with touch screens, because of course, that was all Apple's idea...now they give Samsung beef because they are creating all these random devices, saying Apple will find out what works then make that...seriously? That would make Apple the copier and then Samsung would be the one to sue them.

I saw people saying Apple should make a tablet with wacom like features and blah blah blah, guess what, Samsung has that already...if you're going to be jumping all over it, why not jump all over it, it's already there, because it's not an Apple product? Oh, sorry, too bad it's not made by the company you're married to...personally I don't follow products because they're made by one company, but because they make what I want, what I like, what I need. Multitasking is a great thing, if they could make multitasking like on a PC, I'd love it.

To me, Microsoft messed up by forcing everyone to use a phone/tablet OS on their computers, I hate how Windows 8 defaults everything to stupid fullscreen apps, I want to have my Windows, the OS is called Windows for a reason, so give me my windows....not these stupid tiles and fullscreen only apps, if you want to make a stupid tiles and fullscreen app OS, call the OS tiles/pages and keep it separate from Windows.

Personally, the Galaxy Note 3 is perfectly sized. It fits in my pocket nicely, has a pen if I need to handwrite anything or draw, the multitasking could be improved, as it only works with certain apps, but other than that, it's powerful, gets the job done, isn't overly sized for a phone, camera, etc., and decently sized for everything else. Another great feature they have that all Apple phones/tablets don't is the ability to expand the memory, and swap out memory cards.

I've had people complain saying Apple should make bigger phones, allow them to add more storage, etc. I think everyone should shut up about the copying crap, all these stupid patents and lawsuits make everyone scared and prevent the creation of what people want.

And all the stupid fanboys/girls defend companies even when they know the products are inferior...Apple, add wacom type pen functionality, make bigger phones, add removable storage, make more variation, the world is composed of individuals, each individual has preferences, more variation is necessary,

To those saying Samsung is just making all this random crap to see what sticks...they're actually doing the right thing, some people may not like certain products, but that's OK, because others will. I/we/you may think a product is stupid, but other people might like it, and that's all that matters. A lot of product lines were discontinued because of not enough interest, and some people were sad to see those product lines discontinued.

Just look what happened to the original iPod, how many people still use those on a daily basis?

Ahahahahaha .... Note 3 fits in your pocket nicely ... and you signed up to call as "stupid fanboys" (your words).

I'm quite sure that also the Galaxy Note 12.2 "fits in your pocket nicely". It's an Android tablet, so it should be perfect for you. :D
