It was always about Screen Size and Price vs iOS. It was never about Android vs iOS.

People left the iOS environment because they preferred the larger screen. Androids are mostly for the pragmatic and the tech-savvy. Some were unwilling to pay premium to use iOS when Android performed the same basic functions in a "fundamental" way. Tech-savvy people who were so entranced by specs would have also chosen Android devices.

Now though, with the iPhone 6 and Plus, people are flocking to the user experience of iOS. They even swallow the premium price.

Most tech-savvy people I know aren't easily enchanted by specs. It's the ones with just enough knowledge to think they know it all who sink into the specs glory hole.

Tim Cook on Apple's competitors:
Google is the top [competitor]. And then they enable many people in the hardware business -- like Samsung. And Samsung is the best of the hardware companies in the Android sphere.

He gets it.

I see Apple's main competitor as Google. Android devices may come and go, but it is Android itself that competes with iOS. It's a great arms race between Apple and Google and it benefits the users of both platforms.

Not so sure about that, it's the same with Windows and hardware OEMs. The problem is that it drives a race to the bottom, which affects quality and also innovation. That business model has problems both for OEMs and the platform vendor in the long run, ask yourself why IBM sold of it's PC division to Lenovo, or why Microsoft now makes their own hardware (Surface/Surface Pro).

The answer is simple really.

Over the years, Apple was continually losing marketshare to Android, more specifically to Samsung. Because people wanted larger phones and higher resolution screens.

Apple was basically forced to concede and admit they were wrong, and enter into the market that Samsung and others had paved the way for.

I think its also other reasons. A better graphics chip. Moving to larger screens and higher resolutions ( Also higher pixel count Retina ) Means a more beefier graphics systems are needed. We can see this as Samsung note 4 FPS in games is much slower in in previous phones. While having bigger screens & PPI then Apple Samsung have not done much to improve on their graphics system. Close to the same thing with Apple but less apparent as have a better graphics chip.

While it appears Apple is way behind in features/Specs they are waiting for markets to mature and the right time to release them.

Same thing with NFC. Why bring out NFC if a better payment system is not in place? They waited first that TouchID was established before coming out with NFC to make it more relevant for a better payment system.

someone in high position in samsung uses apple product and iphone and he said because apple has good quality. but he has to use samsung product in his office,in his house all is apple

That's smart. It enables him to grow intimately familiar with Apple's strengths and weaknesses, so he knows exactly what to copy and what to improve.

In the words of Sun Tzu:
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

And also that can't be serious

Polycarbonate is one of the most resilient plastics on the planet. They make flak jackets and bullet-proof vests out of it because it doesn't break.

Aluminum, on the other hand, is used to make soda cans.

But hey, if Apple says metal is better then it must be true. Just be careful putting it in your pocket, it might bend.

What a strange post. This from a person who owns an iPhone 6. :p

Not sure how this affects Apple since Samsung's competitors also compete with Apple. The downward trend began about a year ago so obviously it's not the 6+, lol.

I'm still hoping Android L finally nails it. The GUI is there, but stability and performance are lacking. The mobile OS landscape reminds me of the 90s desktop OS battle: Apple had the superior GUI but lacked protected memory and crashed embarrassingly often, while Windows had superior performance and stability but the GUI was rather rigid and clunky. Now Android has the superior GUI, but iOS is faster and rock solid (except for iOS 8 :( ) Not saying iOS is as bad as Windows, but it's lagging in versatility for sure.

Anyways, back on topic, I detest Samsung's mods to Android. They are gaudy advertisements for the showroom devices that have no usability advantages whatsoever. If Samsung offered a pure version of Android, I would actually consider one of their devices. Still wouldn't buy it, but I'd consider it!

The problem in forums like this is that they confuse Android with Samsung and think they are the only Android competition when since a couple of years others are growing.

Some numbers from the Guardian

When you hear about Samsung profits, you need to distinguish between the profits of the whole company, and its profits in the phone market. Most of us don't really care how much or how little money Samsung makes on selling refrigerators or vacuum cleaners or TVs, but care about the phone market.

According to the Guardian, "quarterly profit from Samsung’s mobile business, which reached 6.7tn won a year earlier, is forecast to be a little over 2tn won", while total quarterly operating profit for the company "will be around 4.1 trillion won (£2.3bn), the lowest in more than three years and far below analysts’ expectations of 5.2tn won. It would mark a 60% fall from the 10.2tn won recorded the year before. "

So while total profit dropped by about 60%, mobile profit dropped by about 70%. (At the moment, 1000 Won is about 94 cents, so one trillion Won is a bit less than a billion dollars).

If Samesung never existed, Apple would have simply turned left or right and sourced components from someone else. Think Samesung is the only semiconductor or screen manufacturer in the world? Apple designed the phone you're now holding. Award-winning chefs create masterpieces with ingredients they can buy from any number of grocers.

Now Samesung, without Apple... well...

Very good seeing that side by side that way!

I believe there was an internal Samsung email, that stated "we need to make our phones more like iPhone's". I don't remember the exact quote or, know it to be fact, but I do remember reading about it.:apple:

HTC innovate. Motorola innovate. Samsung copy, teardown their competitors' products, and market them at a cheaper price. The competitors sue, Samsung counter-sue to increase the length of the court case, and by the time they need to pay a settlement they've made so much profit from the products that the settlement is absolutely inconsequential.

They've done it with vacuum cleaners (Dyson), photography (Kodak), television (Sharp), and phones (Apple).

Not to mention they've got a class action lawsuit against their fridges and washing machines.

That's why myself and others are more than happy to see Samsung fail.

This guy gets it. Upvote the hell out of this guy.

None of us want to see Apple's competitors go out of business—unless:

  1. They're against consumer privacy
  2. They're against net neutrality or
  3. They blatantly copy the competition

Nothing good can come from those three ideals. I'd prefer they change their minds instead of go out of business, but hey it's up to them. Hopefully consumers vote with their wallets. Unfortunately, and quite hilariously, Samsung is getting eaten up at the low end by copycats in China. How does it feel Samsung? Do you cry every time?

No premium price.

Check the total cost of owning either an iPhone or a top class Android, Windows, etc.

The phones come out about par - the telecom companies give you an illusion. They are the ones who are ripping off the customers, esp., in the USA.

Samsung's problem is NOT APPLE… it's the low-end Android phones that are cheaper and for all practical purposes about the same. They got little to differentiate themselves anymore and their fighting a battle to the bottom.

samesung problem is not apple? THEN WHY THEY ONLY ATTACKING apple?

The only thing keeping Samsung alive is the Android OS. If you think about it, they are just selling hardware. Samsung was not able to develop their own OS. They tried, they failed. Now they are suffering because Google is taking all the ad revenue and app purchases. Samsung last year paid Microsoft $1 Billion because they hold 200 Android patents. Now they are being sued again because its time to pay up and they haven't coughed up the money. At the end, Google and Apple are the clear winners and they will weed out Samsung.

So the headline is misleading because your personal opinion is that something that wasn't said in the headline isn't true. Huh.:D

No, it's misleading because there is no way a phone(s) that have been out for 3 weeks ruined the profits of a massive company that makes WAY WAY WAY more than just phones.

How so? You want Apple to have its competitors die off? I don't know about you but I'd rather have Apple be challenged by competitors; it will force Apple to innovate further as opposed to resting on their laurels.

Decent competitors like HTC and LG are good, Samsung are just ****. Nothing they make is pushing Apple's innovation, because their products contain bad versions of stuff Apple releases.

It's good because the "fanboys" of Samsung are worse than that of Apple, something to finally shut them up for about about how perfect Samsung are

Hmm, why does the iPhone 6 Plus look so familiar? Oh, that's right...

Apart from the rectangular shape in the middle it looks nothing like the note. And if you wonder why SAMSUNG phones look familiar you can check post number 322 for compelling reasons :D

Oh really? Perhaps you aren't aware of the years of R&D, building out the cellular infrastructure, and all the patents that Samsung has that enabled our iPhones to work.

Symbiotic.
