Him with no range is still better than the majority of the SS playing.

Not true. By a lot of measurements, Jeter's lack of range has cost his team a lot of runs, especially over the last half dozen years or so. All those groundballs he doesn't get to become hits, whereas a decent shortstop turns them into outs. There isn't a single stat that I know of that suggests that Jeter is a better-that-average shortstop. Some of them indicate he's one of the two or three worst.

Being a poor fielder isn't necessarily a dealbreaker if the player produces a lot more runs with his bat to make up for it. But pride and habit are the only reason to keep Jeter at short these days.

I don't think he is a bad fielder per se. He makes the play to the balls he does get to and is quite athletic on the ones he barely gets to. I just wouldn't say he is the best or among the best.

At best, he's middle-of-the-road...and for what he's paid, he's downright awful. Most sabermetric status put him as a flat-out awful fielder (no range); this is offset by his extremely low error rate (traditional counting stats). Neither side is perfect, but I'm inclined to lean towards the SABR side. He shouldn't have even been in the running for the Gold Glove anyways...but it's been a total joke for years.

you ****ing yankee homers need to wake up and stop drinking so much kool aid.

fangraphs

As we can see by that, Jeter has the 6th worst UZR in the league over the past 3 years. He's old and he's not going to get any better, his career is only down hill from here. The fact that he is demanding $20 million a year just proves how broken baseball is. He's not even worth $10 million. What a ****ing joke of a league.

Meanwhile, the team in Boston that nobody gives a **** about anymore (GO Bs, Cs, and Pats :p) just traded for Adrian Gonzalez...

Does it matter how old Mo is if he is still one of the most dominant closers in the game?

He's still good but one of these days he'll probably fall and break his hip or something. Hope he's drinking his milk. :p

Don't mind xioxide, he is just a bitter Red Sox fan.

bitter? no. bored with a sport that is boring as **** and on top of that doesn't care about competitive balance and parity? yes.

This was posted in the season thread, but since it is more relevant here I thought I would post it up.

So the redsoxs failed at getting Mo and now Gonzales who's next they will fail at getting :)

Jason Werth. :D The Nationals just signed him to a 7 year deal.

I now expect the Yankees to show "big" interest in Crawford just to drive up the price for the Red Sox. Also bad news for the Angel's because the Yankees are most likely going to get involved. Ultimately, I do not want the Yankees to sign Crawford because that means the Yankees would most likely deal Gardner and I like him. He provides speed and creates chaos. He just needs to get bunting down......

Being a Phils fan I can't wait till he comes to CBP...:p Shades of Scott Rolen's return:D

126 mil for batting 120 during the regular season with RISP... Are you freak'n kidding me...

This press conference just proves how much of a class act Jeter is.

Compared to the Steinbrenners, maybe. The Jeter re-signing has been completely overblown. He was never going anywhere and the Yankees were always going to pay him. They'd better hope that his production doesn't decline too much, or the NY media will be in the uncomfortable situation of having to criticize him.

The Red Sox are playing money ball, no excuses to talk crap about the Yankees doing it.

7 years $142 for Crawford.

No joke. It's funny how all day I heard how hard the Yanks were going after him...looks like the Crawford camp was using the Yanks as leverage.

Let's see how much $$ the Yanks start throwing at Cliff Lee now. Red Sox have definitely made a splash, and the Yanks won't be able to stand that for long.

The only thing it will do is push the Yankees to give Lee 7 years. The money would be about the same.

Everyone thought that Crawford was going to the Angels. The Red Sox must have sweetened the pot.

Cashman talked to Crawford for an hour today, I bet that was to drive the price up.

Over 300 million for A-Gone and Crawford.

The Angles are probably now going after Beltre.

ESPN is reporting that Lee has signed with the Phillies.

Sources: Cliff Lee to return to Phillies

Pitcher Cliff Lee reached an agreement on a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies late Monday night, a team source told ESPNDallas.com's Richard Durrett.

Lee's agent informed the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers that they're out of the running for the free agent left-hander.
ESPN's Buster Olney confirmed that the Yankees received word late Monday that they're no longer in the picture for Lee, while Durrett confirmed that the Rangers have also been eliminated from the Lee sweepstakes.

Lee had been weighing offers from the Yankees and Rangers against a spirited late bid by his former team, the Phillies.
Lee, 32, is on the verge of joining Carl Crawford of the Boston Red Sox and Jayson Werth of the Washington Nationals as the third free agent to sign a contract of more than $100 million this offseason.

Both the Rangers and Yankees have made serious runs at Lee in recent weeks, sending emissaries to his home in Little Rock, Ark., and going beyond their initial packages to add years and dollars to their offers. The Yankees have presented Lee with a seven-year offer in excess of $140 million, while Texas' best offer reportedly topped out at six years and more than $20 million annually.
Baseball sources said the Phillies, who had been lurking on the periphery, jumped into the process with fervor after the winter meetings in Florida last week.

The Phillies previously acquired Lee from Cleveland Indians at the July 2009 non-waiver deadline, and Lee posted a 7-4 record with a 3.39 ERA during the regular season before helping lead Philadelphia to a World Series appearance against the Yankees. Lee went 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA against New York, but the Phillies fell to the Yankees in six games.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. traded Lee to Seattle Mariners last December in conjunction with the team's acquisition of Roy Halladay from Toronto Blue Jays, but sources said Lee developed a fondness for his teammates and the city of Philadelphia and would be interested in returning if the Phillies can come up with a package that's competitive with the Yankees and Rangers. If the Phillies were able to pull off a Lee signing, he would join Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels in a dream rotation for Philadelphia.

The Phillies' club policy typically precludes contracts of longer than three years for pitchers, and they held the line with Halladay to three years and $60 million, plus a $20 million vesting option for 2014. Given the length of Lee's other offers, the Phillies might have to break with tradition and offer a deal of at least five years to bring him into the fold.

Lee has a career record of 102-61 with a 3.85 ERA in nine seasons with Cleveland, Philadelphia, Seattle and Texas. He's 7-2 with a 2.13 ERA in the postseason over the past two years, and was unbeaten in October before suffering back-to-back losses to San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

At least he is out of the league. Better than him going to Texas. Lee might be a great Postseason pitcher but his regular season seems sketchy.
