More hassle to use the phone for ID than just fetching the physical card I have to carry anyway.

Hopefully they'll remember the rest of the world. There's already an NFC chip in our IDs and passports, would be a breeze to spit out a digitised one for the Wallet App. The only use I've found for it currently, is authenticating my banking app on device, with my passport. Works well.

Security wise, I imagine it'll be:
  1. Double click side button
  2. FaceID
  3. Select the digital ID
  4. Phone locks in the background (Ideally requiring a passcode for the first subsequent authentication)
  5. Present your digital ID
With ever increasing personal data on our phones it might be wise if Apple starts enforcing alphanumeric passcodes and recommend the 10 tries wipes your phone (sorry parents).

Or to use a physical id
1. Fetch from wallet
2. Present your physical ID

Nevada passed legislation in 2021 to allow an Electronic License, but seeing as this is the first year you can renew your drivers license on the internet, I doubt we will actually have it until California releases it.

Seriously. The alternative is...not to start? Apple Pay adoption was sparse at the beginning and now I can use it in so many places.
The main thing keeping a person from being able to completely ditch a physical wallet is government-issued ID.

I wholly agree that this is worth taking on, and while it will take a while, the payoff is worth it.

I've been freaking fantasizing about a digital wallet since I was a geeky young lad int he early 90s. We are close!

Remember Passbook, Wallet's predecessor 2012-2015? Alabama offered Passbook drivers' licenses back then. Why aren't they on the Wallet list?
This is a whole new beast that uses RFID infrastructure, not scanning QR codes, or the like.

This is starting very conservatively, with TSA at a few airports (not really even up and running) for now.

But down the road, this is the infrastructure that will replace having to have a physical ID card. It's worth investing some real time and energy into, doing pilot projects like these TSA airport projects.

Let's see where it's at in 2030.

Australia has has this for awhile but it’s annoyingly in our state government app.

Useful app but still harder to go find than apple wallet.

One of the few places where federal government should take initiative and standardize. Along with things like electronic toll systems where there are benefits and cost savings to having one system.

True of course. But the same can be said of cash payments vs. using your phone or even a card. The former is on its way out.
I disagree. Cash is something you physical have to get from an ATM. Your ID is always in your wallet. Plus I open my wallet to show my ID much less then I do to pay for something.

So the device remains locked even after authenticating with FaceID?

That is, does this intend to say,

"You do not need to unlock, OR show, OR hand over your device" (which is good)

or does it intend to say,

"You do not need to unlock+show" (that is the phone is still going to be unlocked, only that you are presenting it to a machine rather than a person)?

My guess is the latter. The phone is still unlocked when authenticated. This is not safe enough.

Because the concern is that, for example, if the police pulls you over and asks for ID, if you use your phone as an ID, the police might take your entire phone and scan it on his device or even goes back to his car to punch in the info.

It is important to have a way to open the ID while keeping the rest of the phone locked.
It looks similar to how Apple Pay works. You would be authenticated to bring up the ID but the phone is not unlocked.

Louisiana has their own dedicated Digital Wallet app for drivers licenses, hunting licenses, and COVID-19 vaccinations.

I was hoping they'd allow me to export this to Apple's wallet app at some point, but no such luck so far.
If our politicians can’t make money off it they won’t do it. I have emailed our legislatures and they have flat out told me it won’t be happening.

Florida has their own app but it is pretty slow and has to down the data from online every time I login. What if I don’t have a good cell signal. It is made by Thales.
I believe Florida said the initial app was a beta and they may be moving to a different platform.

Not sure about other countries but here in Poland we have one app to get electronic version of:

- ID (sadly not respected everywhere)
- Driver License
- Car ID (VIN, actual state of car stuff like Car inspections, OC, AC)
- Covid Vaccination
- One supported Train ticket reseller
- Child School ID
- Card of Big Family for discounts for 2+2 and larger
- Collage / Student ID
- Receipts from Doctor

And since this year - due to Mordor and Isengard invasion on our Neighborhood - also Our Guests from Ukraine can have their ID (or basic info ID) in this app.

So it’s pointless to have ID in iPhones as it’s extremely fragile information.

What is more our physical ID have RFID inside + security code so we could use NFC freely to use scanned NFC from physical card to authenticate ourselves.

A for effort but the situations that this would come in handy for are the exact same situations where you shouldn’t be handing your phone over.
What makes you think you’re handing your phone over? This is going to be more like digital boarding passes. Also, Your phone is not unlocked.

You would think Apple would have more influence on California participating sooner since they are based there, but I guess not? What is the hold up?
They will have to threaten to move to a different state 😂
Lol! I went to subway when it launched, one of the first places to accept Apple Pay and the lady was like “yeah idk how to do that sorry”

Now when I try to use the digital license, people think I’m doing fraud.
Not anymore for Apple Pay, but people are always slow to adopt something new, unless it benefits them. ID’s in a digital wallet is a neat feature but not necessary, there’s no real benefit. Different than airline tickets. Those get you on board quick, you won’t lose it or hunt for it.
