What are everyone’s thoughts about the event on Monday? I’m expecting Power user models only. Nothing that will tempt me from my M1 MacBook Air as I’m definitely not in that category (work in FMCG so all windows based). Be interesting to see the products though which are focused on power and how they differ from current line up. I can’t see apple going back to the likes of HDMI as the rumours suggest. Have apple ever taken a step backwards in this respect?
As Apple only have one 15/16" model I have no choice, even if a MBA would otherwise suit me perfectly. Probably the single most annoying thing about Apple's whole product lineup - no 'consumer' laptop around the 15" mark.

What makes the 15/16 a must for you? Is it the screen size or screen real estate? Curious. The last time I had a laptop >13” was at uni when I had a super cheap and basic 15.4” HP that was a monster to lug around!

I would never consider a MacBook Air even if it was available in a larger 15”/16” size due to the limited connectivity. That said I still have an old 2015 13” MacBook Pro although it’s on its last legs so I’ve bought an M1 Mac Mini to replace it. As my 15.6” Windows gaming laptop is now my main computer I don’t need a portable Mac. If I travel I take my Windows laptop.

bit of a mix, I often need multiple windows on screen at once (e.g. document and references) and juggling them becomes impossible at less than 1680x1050 resolution at a bare minimum, which is available on the 13” but too small/fiddly. I guess a two-monitor set up would also work for this (e.g. MacBook Air and sidecar iPad Pro 12.9) but that becomes desk bound to the point you had just as well use a desktop with a huge screen or dual monitors.

I don't really plug a lot in, so IO is not really a concern of mine. Probably a USB stick and SD card would be my most used things, so a USB A and SD card reader would be the most useful, but I can get a USB C thumb drive (though that doesn't help if someone else hands me their USB A one with a file I need 🤦‍♂️) and the SD card reader is meant to be coming back anyway. I find the previous (retina) gen 15" machines are perfectly totable anyway, and about the size and heavier than the current 16", so no real complaints there.

A camera and case question for the cognis... cogneshc, people who might know.

I have a Nikon D90 DSLR which I'm about to put on eBay as I rarely use it (reasonable offers accepted). Being an SLR it's a joy to hold and use; I bought my first SLR in 1981 so it's fairly automatic when I pick one up that my right hand wraps around the strap, my index finger poised over the shutter while my left hand does the stabalising and focusing/zooming.

So obviously, I really hate taking photos with an iPhone. The shutter's in the wrong place and I can't grip it properly. And there's no strap.

I did do a search to see if anyone sold a case or similar with an extended grip, and there are reviews of such cases but for much older models. No-one seems to have made anything recent. Do any of you know differently?

Why not post this question - perhaps start a thread - in the 'digital photography' section?

Discussion there is not confined to digital cameras, - many of the regulars started out with film - and the people who frequent that section of the forum are (in my experience) a very friendly, welcoming, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful lot.

Not sure which iPhone you have but you could look for a shooting rig, something like this?

Or something a little more compact??

Well yes, I could (and should) have, but I was just sounding out the UK locals first, because...

... still on the SE, desperately hoping for job news next week so I can finally upgrade to a 13. I'll check those out, thanks.

Moment do a camera grip case I’m sure. They have some attachments - although pricey to the likes of me - which take incredible photos. Bare in mind I’m by no means a photographer of any stretch of the imagination

edit: Sorry, I got mixed up, I can't see a grip case on their website. It was the 'shutter case' I was referring too.

I’d be interested too. I went from Nikons to Olympus but very rarely pick mine up now, did some paid family portraiture but lockdown dumped that on its head, and my knees are getting old for crawling around on the floor of peoples homes persuading that grouchy toddle to like me…
i Like the idea of something to be able to grip the phone with a natural camera button position, and the Adonit looked good but doesn’t seem to be for more recent phones…

Tempted by the AirPods 3rd Gen - but I don't use my current 1st Gen a hell of a lot TBH (battery only lasts around 40mins on them now!! lol)

What I don’t like about the new third generation is that they don’t come with and use the different size silicone ear tips. I have the original AirPods and can’t use them as they’re also one size and don’t fit well in my ears as well as being uncomfortable. Plus there is no noise cancellation like in the Pros.

Then just buy the pro’s? Happy with mine.

the Pro's are very similarly priced at the moment - Amazon or John Lewis have them at £188 - the latter comes with a 2 year guarantee.....

Hi anyone able to provide how much the new Macbooks cost through the apple student portal for the 14 inch models and 16 models. Thank you.

I usually use the online chat and get them to email me a quotation.... This comes with a link to purchase at the discounted price too....

How does everyone feel about the Covid situation in the UK? seems to be getting out of control again. I can see restrictions comning in force again. Here in Nottingham cases are on the up. Worrying times.

Unfortunately where I live (Ipswich) we've got the highest rate in the UK currently. Its not good at all, As it stands I just feel its a matter of time until I get it, which isn't a nice situation to be in. Think restrictions will definitely be on the way, but then again we are testing a lot more than other countries so that may reflect in the case numbers.

Yeah maybe. I get my booster jab next week so Im looking forward to that.

Certainly very concerning.
My wife and I have had both jabs 2 months or so ago now.
My children will get theirs soon (12-15 year olds).....

Base 14” - £1708.80, 16” - £2158.80
Thank you, but spoke with Apple earlier and they quoted 14" £1726 and 16" £2158. Not sure why 14" price is different. Pretty expensive prices was thinking of selling my M1 MBP privately and then funding for 14" but looks like will be shelling a lot more out than expected.
