I have this thread to thank for opening my eyes to variances across processors, even those in the same family. I'd recommend that anyone discussing jumping from the upcoming MacBook Pro to something like the XPS with Kaby Lake to review this forum and other sources to look at the differences inside each processor family. The XPS will likely ship with a Kaby Lake U processor. While the MacBook Pro processor isn't known, it will likely be Skylake, but one that is in the higher power range like the H.
I have no doubt that someone more familiar with these products will correct me, but just something for people to make sure they look at.
Yes, Apple has used the H-series or what ever they used to be called. They could go the Dell route and use 45W CPUs with slow iGPUs and add a dGPU to every model. The problem is that no laptop with similar form factor and performance of the current MBP comes even close to it's battery life in moderate use. I would be a big no no for Apple to cut down on battery life or make the form factor any bigger. It is going to be interesting to see what they will do if Intel discontinues it's high end iGPU line after Skylake.

I just keep remembering this ...

So... no invites today, right? :(

I heard a while back that Apple didn't want to make October events anymore. So at this point, I'm thinking 50% event / 50% press release.

I just don't think they will announce the new macs so close to the earnings call; that'd be a very busy week.

If invites come tomorrow, we'll have an event next week; otherwise, we will have a press release next week. I'm 90% certain.

Ok guys I have a serious question based on the speculation so far. I am waiting for the new MBP but the question I have is should I just buy the standard config or should I do what I was considering and upgrade the processor and the HDD? I am going to use it for some video stuff and also do some things for work. I might also play a little World of Warcraft on it but not a lot as I really don't play that to much anymore.

I also want this to last for awhile and not have to upgrade anytime soon. One of my primary things is the HDD space on the laptop. I am paying for the 200GB iCloud drive as well. So any serious recommendations on what to do when the MBP finally becomes available would be greatly appreciated.

At this point, why can't Apple be like Hollywood and release a teaser, that simply states, "Arriving 2016"? I imagine Apple is hemorrhaging sales to Dell, Asus, or HP. These are lost sales which they may never recover. At this time, I find it hard to believe that they are making more on the obsolete products than they are loosing to competitors' new products. What is the logic for not enticing people to wait? Even car companies do a teaser.

no idea if we will see invites today.. the iphone 7 event the invites went out on a monday. if we hear nothing today can pretty much cross out next week for the event. so that leaves us with the 24th-27th timeframe.

That's not true. In 2008 the invites went out on Thursday (October 9th) and the event was on Tuesday (October 14th). But I doubt the invites will come this week :p

Completely agree, I can only assume its to build hype and so people pull the trigger and impulse buy the second they come out, even if that means overlooking potentially an...... underpowered GPU, Soldered Parts, Small stock SSD, overpriced model for its specs.

or they really just dont care about the Mac and well, if nobody buys it, its a good enough reason to concentrate on their beloved iPhone and iPad Pro (The New Computer) and say I told you so.

Sorry multi quote post

I think people are dreaming if they believe the Mac has enough life left in it to make it worthwhile for them to transition to ARM.

Hell, Paul Thurrott today published a story that Microsoft doesn't need Windows anymore. The point in the original article that lead Thurrott to write his opinion piece is bang on “nobody writes new applications for Windows anymore." Couple this with the fact Windows 10 is already confirmed to be the last version of Windows, and you can already see how this all plays out. The Windows everywhere company, a life without walls, is now actively preparing for a life without Windows. This is where we are at.

The same applies to the Mac. There's very little happening by way of new apps on the Mac. The most popular apps feel like they are on extended maintenance support at best, including Apple's own applications. Where iOS versions have been released, those get updated far more frequently with new features while the Mac stuff just sits there lagging far behind. Even Adobe seems to be pushing out a whole more stuff to mobile devices now then their bread and butter CC desktop apps.

If new software isn't being written that pushes the boundaries for better and faster hardware, the need for new hardware doesn't exist. And it also means you are wasting resources building new versions of Operating Systems if nobody is actively developing software to take advantage of new capabilities.

As I have posted numerous times, the performance gains people are going to see going from Haswell to Skylake are tiny. If you've wasted a full year and more waiting and crying for this update, you'll surely be asking yourself was it really all worth it - once you take delivery of your new machines? I hope the new Touchbar, Touch ID and slimmer and lighter form factor make up for it - but of course you'll also be compromising on fewer connectivity options and the loss of MagSafe.

It's really sad to see for those of us who grew up with traditional PC's and Macs, and still love them, but the ever-shrinking market means our preferred toys are already living on borrowed time.

This is one of the most depressing things I have read.
Though I do think desktop PCs / macs / and desktop operating systems are going to be a round for while still.

Except that a phone in 2016 as fast as a laptop in 2011!
??? you mean a phone in 2016 that is as fast as a laptop in 2016.

How big a job is it to buy one of the latest Razers - and make it into a Hackintosh?
It could be a major ordeal man. If you can find a guide of someone with that laptop(I haven't seen any), then you may be able to get everything to work. Every motherboard is different and is oftentimes tricky to get little things to work right, like ports, wake/sleep, wifi, audio. Also you have to be careful every update like 10.12.1, you will have to make a backup first incase, the update bricks your setup.

All this said, if you are feeling brave please do it, and post your results somewhere so others (and me) can do what you did.

The final said thing, that keeps me glued to actual mac laptops and not hackintosh laptops. Is even when you ave everything working, you will not get that razer blade trackpad to function like the apple trackpads do, thus giving a very different OS X experience.

Halt and Catch Fire for me just chilling...
Great Show! I am about half way through it

Release date.
October 27

I only checked the October events but yes, it happened in 2010.

Thank you very much. I mean it thanks for digging that up.

So by this, I think we are back to the 27th as being the event date.

Apple's doing this on purpose. The longer we have to wait, the more we are willing to pay any price :(
I mean, How many of us will buy a full maxed out 15"?
This guy

Other tech companies release new products just to boost sales that quarter, without a vision for what the product or update should be. I am glad Apple is following the Orson Wellesian strategy of releasing once the product is finished.

Even if its boring to wait so long.
No. Stahp. It's not ok.

Its sad, there is so much opportunity for Apple to take a bigger share in the PC market with the Mac.
That's not Apple's Goal.

An event on the 27th is pretty much a certainty I think. The only question is will they have time to showcase some new Macs with all the other exciting announcements they'll have for us. :)
lol? like what

Thursday seems to be the most popular day for recent events...

Monday
Thursday
Thursday
Thursday
Wednesday
Thursday

Thank you. a while back someone was saying that events are usually not on Thursdays. But I this makes me feel that there isn't really a day of week preference, just not Fridays.

remember my words. invites are coming tomorrow, the 13th October!
for an event on the 20th or 27th?

I think there is a good chance invites will go out next week for an event on the 27th.

Its so stupid people dont stop buying the current models.
I agree. Those traitors are making it easier for apple to not update the MBPs and making us wait longer!

Micro Center is having a sale on all of it's macs right now. with $200 off an 15" 16/256 model and $200 off the base 13" model too. Up to $200 off iMacs, $100 off mac mini, and $100 off apple watches (original). Seems like a weird time to start a sale after an American holiday. Maybe a clearance event to get rid of stock? they are store pickup only (which is not odd for them).

lol.
front page of micro center. 'All new MacBook Pro' .... haswell processor. hasn't been updated in 2 years

I don't necessarily think 2 TB is as insane as people are suggesting. If they're willing to offer 256 GB on a freakin' phone, it shows they still prioritize physical storage space, so I don't think it's asking too much for 2 TB on the MBP. Not to mention, unless the new MBP comes with LTE, it won't be connected to the cloud at all times like the phone.

I'm not really expecting it, but I don't think it's out of the question completely.

Then you are here for the wrong reason, just buy the old MBP.
None of us would trade a MBP for KabyLake xps13 or Blade stealt as those are 15W prosessors. If you are OK with that go to the waiting for MBA thread, thats the power you need, that will aldo get KabyLake if it gets an update, the MBP won't.
There's money burning hole in my pocket right now. I might go stupid and buy anything which has recent specs, so why not a macbook pro I thought. BTW no way buying that ugly MBA which is more than a year old now.

While I agree with you, and companies should release a product when it's done. Orson Wellesian strategy. They can do other updates to the old models in the mean time, like swap out certain hardware.

When there is a a several year delay. It's un acceptable, and like other companies, Apple should drop their prices until their new creation is finished.
Though I understand why apple does not drop their prices over time as they go out of date. Because if they did this buyers would wait in buying the new models because they believe the price will drop in a couple months.

for an event on the 20th

It is very possible. I hope you are right.

Why do you believe the 20th over the 27th?

Might want to re-check October 2013, October 2012 and October 2010 there. They're all past the mid-points of October.

Not sure if I count Oct 15, 16th, and Oct 13th past the midpoint of October. They are the mid point of October. Plus for any of those events the invites would of gone out near the beginning of October.

Ah well, its all throwing rocks at the sky at this point. Apple is as likely to announce a complete iPod refresh along side the Mac one its been so long.

Those were the days the invitations were sent out not the actual events.
Hmm, I see. I know someone posted a while back the days of the week that past invites were sent out. Anyone know where to find it? Were they all on Monday and Tuesdays?
