Well, as a German and somebody who worked many years for BMW at FIZ Munich i say, newer BMW sucks, but they aren’t Toasters. It works very well with iPhone’s up to 14* and it’s Apple certified. The fault is clearly on Apple’s side, poor iPhone hardware design/quality and probably all linked to the heat issue.

I love bmws but my current car isnt that. I know they are not toasters but why only does BMW seem to facilitate this issue?

I think BMWs are good cars, but like Mercedes, the moment you drive them off the lot they lose 80% of their value. Bleph. I'll stick with my Accord.

Not always the best idea. Many incentives are not applied to cash deals, cash deals require paying tax up front while leases don’t in many states, and subsidized lease programs sometimes have zero percent interest.
Is for me. I don't live in the states. We pay tax regardless of how and when you pay.

I have a 2023 Land Rover Defender and the wireless charging overheats the phone to the point the "too hot" warning comes on and it shuts it down. Guess it was built for Androids.

Unfortunately in their infinite wisdom Apple decided on a completely pointless gimmicky feature they call 'MagSafe'. Worked well on a laptop where someone might come along, trip on the power cable, and send your laptop flying. That's just never going to happen on a Qi Charger though, but Apple still felt the need to add some magnets and effectively made their handset not 100% compatible with most Qi Chargers (MagSafe has only just been introduced into the standard at v2.0 in 2023).

Unfortunately this includes Land Rover chargers!! If you want 100% reliable Qi charging in a Landie, then you need a non MagSafe iPhone. I use the SE3 and it works 100% of the time.

I mean in the grand scheme of things how useful is wireless charging? In my home not really, it charges faster via the cable in fact the only reason I have a wireless charger is it can free with the lads pixel phone and he already has one so I use it more as a nightstand.

Out and about yeah maybe when on a train with wireless charging in the tables but they are few and far between.

In the car is really the only place I exclusively use wireless charging but if it was a cable and took a few seconds to plug in but would prolong the life of my phone then I’d do that.

I have a 23 BMW M240ix and I’ve only put my phone on the charge pad once or twice. But, time to put a USB-C cable in the car.

What is the point of wireless charging? To save a couple of seconds that it would otherwise take to plug in a wire? Taking that couple of seconds to plug in a wire will save several minutes or even hours because wired charging charges the phone much faster than wireless charging.
Yeah I don’t get it either.. the last thing I’d want to do is wirelessly charge a phone in a car especially when it’s sunny.. wireless always adds heat. Especially when the wireless is a flat surface instead of a mounted charger which allows the phone to be used while charging

Everyday some news about something else being wrong with iPhone 15… almost the same with iOS 17. Apple’s quality getting worse.
Has there ever been a major phone and/or OS launch without issues? It’s every year and not just Apple.. apple’s launches just get a lot more attention. Phones get more and more complex with little time between launches to test them fully, there’s bound to be something wrong after millions of people start using it. Fortunately most of the issues have been overblown and mainly software bugs. This is the first potentially major hardware problem, but hard to say how widespread it is, could be caused by an isolated BMW issue.

Regular iPhone 15 here. There’s an issue with the NFC in these.

People have been complaining over Reddit that Apple Pay doesn’t communicate with the terminals and I’m affected too. Not heat or wireless charging related, NFC just dies. Start saying “Hold near reader” and nothing happens. Can’t use Apple Pay.

Not exclusively related to BMW or wireless charging because I don’t have a BMW, but it could be something that contributes to the issue.
That could be significant if it’s affecting all or most 15 devices.. hopefully just a rare defect or another iOS 17 bug. I think we’d hear about it pretty quickly if it’s every phone.

Convince. I like that I don’t have to use the port. The port on my 12 is so loose now from charging and plugging into my truck for CarPlay over the years, it sometimes doesn’t work.

What's your point? If Apple thought you are right they should not implement wireless charging. But if they decided to implement it, they should do it right.

Or, you could buy a good smartphone and stop worrying about overheating.

My iPhone 14 Pro will get uncomfortably hot when wireless charging in my Tesla Model 3 and would also often give a message saying that charging has stopped due to heat. I am foregoing wireless charging at all with my iPhone 15 Pro Max, I just don’t trust it. I also had my battery run down to 89% health after a year on my iPhone 14 Pro, and I think it’s primarily due to it overheating while wireless charging.
Are you using a case with your iPhone? That may contribute to heat retention.
Also, keep in mind that the first few days your phone is going to sync in the background and process the photos, create the Spotlight database, etc.

Been using a Qi charger from Onn since buying my iPhone 11 Pro Max.
It wasn't until my iPhone 14 Pro do I get messages that tells me that charging has been suspended.
Since I have the same charger that meets OEM specs it's not the charger that is wrong but the iPhone that has the problem.

If you have an iPhone 15 and drive a BMW, it might be best to avoid charging the device with the vehicle's wireless charging pad for now.

Over the past week, some BMW owners have complained that their iPhone 15's NFC chip no longer works after charging the device with their vehicle's wireless charging pad, according to comments shared on the MacRumors Forums and X, formerly known as Twitter. Affected customers say the iPhone goes into a data recovery mode with a white screen, and the NFC chip is no longer functional after the device reboots.

In an iPhone, the NFC chip powers features like Apple Pay and digital car keys. Affected users receive a "Could Not Set Up Apple Pay" error message in the Wallet app, and there does not appear to be a way to fix the problem. Some customers say Apple replaced their iPhone after confirming the NFC chip failed, but the replacement iPhone is then vulnerable to the same issue, so there is currently no permanent solution.

While complaints so far have come from iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, it is possible the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are also affected, so owners of any iPhone 15 model should proceed with caution until this issue is sorted.

It's unclear what the specific cause of the issue is, how many customers are affected, and which BMW models are affected. We've reached out to an Apple spokesperson for comment, and we'll update this story if we receive a response.

Previous iphones have had a problem with overheating on the charging pads. We will probably have to wait for the next BMW software update in June before we get a fix on the problem.

The problem is in iPhone not BMW. Only iPhones overheat in BMWs (and not all iPhone models either). Thus the fix probably should come from Apple.

The “Charging On Hold” alert is relatively new. (I think it started with iOS 16, but I could be mistaken, so quote me on that.) You didn’t see the alert years ago (I assume years ago) with your iPhone 11 Pro Max because that alert wasn’t programmed into iOS yet. Previously with iPhone wireless charging (with MagSafe at least, I don’t know if it is the same with all Qi chargers) it would just stop for a while (without any alert) and begin again once the phone cooled back down. It’s entirely possible your iPhone 11 Pro Max also put the charge on hold, but there was just no alert to alert you to that.
